Final notes

It took us quite some time to digest the tones of experiences accumulated through the summer and fall of 2015 including the ten intense days of the Vienna Design Week.

Although the migration has been going on for years in our adult life involving big waves of people coming to Europe (mainly as a result of the war in the former Yugoslavia and the critical situations in the Middle East), we only met the situation firsthand this summer. Budapest (where we are from) and Vienna (where the project took place) play(ed) key role in the life of many people seeking for asylum. The “official” welcoming process of those people were very different though and Hungary’s image has quickly become very negative regarding its refugee politics. Beside the personal and the cultural aspects of the New Local, we think that the most important achievement was that with our means we could build a strong bridge between the two countries and prove our openness and positive attitude.

We are extremely happy that the cookbook came about!

Our closing brunch was super cool with lots of people! Thank you for coming! And thanks for Vienna Design Week selected us for their Stadtarbeit program, for Community Cooking team: work with us, Collegium Hungaricum Wien: support us and finally to Microgiants: to be our Austrain partner in this project!

The New Local soon in Vienna

We worked hard on the cookbook which is already on the way to come out from the printer house! It contains the recipes of the cooking sessions’ participants (who came from Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Palestine, Russia, Syria and Somalia)  and data visualizations about the recent migration of Vienna.

Next week at @ViennaDesignWeek you can have your own piece! It’s a limited edition!

Last Friday we had an intense and useful workshop with the aim to visualize data of the current migration regarding Vienna. Our participants were Nina, Manu, Eszter, Anna and Nicole. Thanks for coming and working with us! Theodora Manolakos was our migration expert from the Municipality of Vienna: her knowledge and fantastic communication skills helped us to understand what are the main issues and of course she provided us lots of data.

Thomas Thurner from School of Data collected us data as well regarding to the main countries who have been recently involved in the migration and refugee situation the most.

End of the day we truly felt the complexity of the topic. In the coming days we will continue the work: partly with the participants who will visualize some of the chosen topics and partly us to figure out how and what would be the best to exhibit and what should be published in the cookbook.

Thanks for everybody who came and worked with us on the topic, it was a real pleasure!

Last preparations before Data Viz workshop

We are in the last preparations and research before our data visualization workshop starts on Friday in Wikihouse Vienna. We are working together with data, migration and cross-cultural experts, graphic designers and architect to make transparent and useful visualizations of the current immigration in Vienna. The results will be exhibited during the Vienna Design Week and printed into our cookbook by the end of September. The workshop is part of the Vienna Open Festival.

We are working on the documentation of the cooking sessions and are starting to organize the data visualization workshop at the end of August (27-28) for what you can apply for if you are interested in immigrants data of Vienna.

Our second day was also fantastic we cooked and talked with humans from Syria, Egypt, Iran, Russia, Malaysia and Palestine. Such a pleasure! Thanks to Angela and Sam from Caritas and Su from Microgiants the tons of help!

We've finished with the first New Local lunch with chefs from Syria, Egypt, Somalia, Russia, Iran and Hungary :-) Cooking sessions in a partnership with Caritas and part of the Vienna Design Week Stadtarbeit program. We feel ourselves very moved by the women&man participants!
