Deep in the forest of the Smoky Mountain in Tennessee is a hidden society. Made up of monsters, freaks and outcasts, the citizens of Nightmare have thrived unnoticed and undisturbed for centuries. 

Until now.

Sickness runs rampant among them, inflicting even the most immortal of species and sending terror through their hearts. What has caused this sickness, and can they stop it? Or are they destined to be wiped out as so many of their ancestors have been?

Welcome to our little town. If you know about it, that means you’re one of us: a monster. a freak. a damned fright in the night. If you don’t, that means you’ve stumbled upon our cozy little community and you best high tail it out of here and pretend you never saw us ‘cause we got one rule out here:keep it a damn secret.

For some reason or another, though, our population has started falling, and not because our citizens are leaving, either. Something’s been coming around when we don’t know it and making people drop dead left and right, whether it’s from a sickness or people being outright murdered, we don’t know.

The recent deaths are causing some tensions between groups and have cause productivity to dwindle as well. Some parents won’t send their kids down to the school and community events have begun to see a decrease in attendance as well. The Council is working on finding the source of the problem and a solution, but with even the Elders finding it difficult to work together, some people are afraid that this is the end of Nightmare.

FREYA CASTOR – forty-two – werewolf

The wolf inside of her has always been strong and difficult to control. As she’s grown older, it has grown stronger, which has turned her into a powerful and formidable werewolf. For this reason, she currently holds the position of the Werewolf Elder on The Council instead of her older brother, who was the rightful successor when their father passed away.

She has always refused to let anyone put her in any one box or group, and whenever someone thinks that they have her figured out, she always surprises them, which makes her someone that is difficult to trust. Despite all of her trickery and secrets, she is caring towards the few people she loves and is a fierce protector of her people – and especially her two children.

The recent deaths in Nightmare have scared almost everyone – except for Freya. Some people believe she’s in on it, while others believe that she is trying to be a calm presence so that a sense of order remains and chaos does not take the town over. Both rumors are correct, but she won’t confirm or deny either rumor.

In an effort to protect her people, Freya has sided with an outside force hellbent on destroying supernatural creatures and has made a deal to get rid of the groups that she hates, which include Necromancers and Revenants. What she doesn’t realize, however, is that the outside group wants all of them dead and her loyalty to them will come at a serious price once her usefulness runs its course.

RYDER DERRICKSON – twenty-two – witch

It’s not something common, being a male witch. Ryder has always been a bit of an oddball, not quite fitting in anywhere. As a male witch, he is looked upon very differently than any of the others. Some see him as a blessing, someone to treat with great respect. And others… well he’s more or less just ignored.

On top of not fitting in with the other witches, he finds he doesn’t quite fit in with the males of the families, either. Where they carry the genes for being a witch, they weren’t born with the abilities their wives, daughters, or sisters were. The fact that Ryder was has them looking at him as a bit of an annoyance.

To make up for not fitting in with the witch families, Ryder has connected with others in the town. He’s particularly interested in one of the waitresses at the diner, Irina Rybar. He’s sure she only sees him as a dear friend, but he certainly has stronger feelings than that for her. He’s also got a strong friendship with Julian Tighe, a male Siren who has experienced similar treatment that he has. The two can often be found together, usually lurking in or around the diner while they wait for Irina to finish her shift.

When things started happening around Nightmare – people getting sick and dying – Ryder tried to help. He watched his mother get ill, then die soon after. Nothing he or his sister did helped her, magical or otherwise. She raised them both on her own, their father refusing to move with them to Nightmare all those years ago.

He’s since been doing his best to hide his emotions over the situation; with it just being he and his sister left, he has to be the man and take care of his little sister, while still trying to have his own life. He’s determined to have a hand in helping solve the town’s problem, though, and has been working to get in front of the council with some suggestions on how to not only help those who fall ill, but to prevent it all together.

TERA VASILE – ninety-two – siren

Tera arrived in Nightmare sometime during the 80′s. If you ask her, she’ll never be specific and maybe it’s best that way. Before Nightmare, she made her living off singing and dancing in lounges, which made the feeding aspect of her life quite a bit easier. No one ever suspected the hard working beauty with an amazing voice. During her time in lounges, she turned down several contracts to become a more professional singer; she enjoyed what she did for work, and the benefits she reaped from doing it.

Once she’d settled in the town, having been chased out of her career by a hunter that got too close, she took ownership of the diner. It was her that decided alcohol should be served in a different space than the diner, and she extended the building to include the now highly coveted bar. With an entrance linking the two locations as well as separate doors, they can be their own establishments yet still share a bit of the space. The location is her pride and joy, and she has been very picky about who she takes on for which roles within each half of the building.

As tragedy strikes Nightmare, Tera has become very afraid for her life. She has lived a long time, and made it through many situations where she didn’t expect to survive. But something about this particular sickness that is sweeping through town has her on edge, and it is definitely becoming more difficult to hide. She’s torn between remaining where she knows, and risking getting sick herself– or running, and escaping the risk of this mysterious and deadly illness.

ORION CASTOR – forty-five – werewolf

Losing his spot as Elder on the Council didn’t disappoint Orion as much as everyone assumed it would. When his sister challenged him – the first time an Elder had ever been challenged in the history of Nightmare – he surrendered almost immediately. The idea of being responsible for his entire species in the town so soon after the death of his father was too overwhelming for him. He didn’t even mind when his sister blew the whole thing out of proportion to seem like an epic battle for power.

In return for his cooperation, Freya made him her right hand man that she tells everything to – including the outside arrangement with the group causing the illness within Nightmare that’s been taking out groups that the siblings find unsavory and want to be obliterated from the town.

When he isn’t serving his sister and betraying the people he was once sworn to protect, Orion can be found managing their bank and drinking everyone under the table with his alcohol addiction – something that Freya has tried to keep hidden from the town.

On the outside, Orion can seem charming and caring, but he truly only cares for himself, his species, and his family’s powerful status within Nightmare and will do whatever it takes to keep things that way, even if it means watching everyone else in town die.

LYALL AVERY – thirty-nine – werewolf

Lyall would never call himself a responsible adult. He constantly moves between Nightmare and its other sister towns throughout the country, often taking a year to travel from one end of the line to the other. He calls himself a ‘tradesman,’ as he travels with goods to exchange at each stop, but it doesn’t make him much money to survive on, not that he really minds. The wolf inside of him is a loner, and he’s perfectly fine with that.

He began his wandering lifestyle about twelve years ago, when his twin children, Lyra and Liam Castor, were ten years old. He and Freya had gone through yet another nasty separation in their marriage and this time he was truly done trying to make it work for the kids. So, he packed up, said his goodbyes, and was gone for almost two years.

When he returns from his travels, he often stays in Nightmare from anywhere between six months to a year, but no more than that, as he does not intend to settle back down anytime soon, much to the disappointment of his children. He does attempt to become invested in the lives of his children when he is around, but always ends up causing a rift in their relationship when he picks up and leaves once more.

With the recent deaths in Nightmare, however, Lyall is determined to stay and help figure out what’s been going on, as he can’t stand to see his fellow monsters suffer. His concern also lies with his family, and he will do whatever he can to ensure his children will not become the newest residents of the local cemetery, even though he knows he’s in way over his head.
