so i was reading about the purgatory theory
and it seems pretty legit, but it got me thinking. what about beatrice? what does her family turning into birds symbolise? so here’s a bit of what i came up with.
-their family is all very close. this can be shown literally by their living quarters both as birds and as people and figuratively by how they all asked wirt about beatrice immediately when they realised he might know her, etc.
-that means they wouldn’t want to leave one another behind, in life or in death
-(it can be assumed that they were all wiped out around the same time, presumably by a plague or invasion given their varied ages)
they were turned to birds, right?
-birds symbolise impermanence; the flitting between life and death perhaps
-the beast kept them in a temporary state, neither here nor there (explained later)
-but beatrice’s family didn’t leave
-when beatrice returned back to them, they all just so happened to become human again
-humans are creatures of finality, who settle and make a home
-now rather than being birds, uncertain and floating in an unsettled and vast unknown, they’re people. settled down. finally. in a home. presumably forever
-they return to mankind can be interpreted as a final death, and peace based off how happy they were.
BUT WHY WAS BEATRICE STUCK AS A BIRD?
-the beast is one’s own fear
-idk if there are theories on this,
but he 100% is
-beatrice was scared by the finality of death
-when that fear “died,” she reunited with her family and greeted them with open arms, proceeding happily to her next stage of life (or afterlife)
