was thinking today about how great it is that junji ito can take any concept and junji-ito it. rarely is the hook compelling at its core - it is 100% on the execution. that is not an insult to the man's stories being uninteresting, but a compliment that he can make them interesting (and terrifying) by sheer skill.

Uzumaki is the prime example. The entire plot is basically "Spirals Are Scary." To describe the plot in more detail doesn't change the fact that the hook is based on the premise of spirals being scary, and everything within the story that occurs is a consequence of that fact, rather than a supporting reason for it.

I would even venture to argue that the plot isn't "Spirals Are Scary," but that the plot is "Spirals" and the consequences are scary - which is also a core feature of so many of Junji Ito's works.

As a counterexample, the Enigma of Amigara Fault does have a plot: In the long-forgotten past, convicted criminals were sentenced to be put in mountains via long tunnels the exact shape of their bodies, which eventually warped them, and through unexplored supernatural means extended their life. But that isn't the horror. It's not a twist reveal in the same way that many other twist-ending horror stories have, even if it is presented as such. That's not what people remember. They remember: This is my hole. It was made for me.

I'm sure a little of that longevity comes from the obvious jokes but it wouldn't be all that funny as a contextless panel. The horror of the Amigara Fault isn't, in fact, that you might get forced into being some kind of unnatural creature. That's just the consequence of the horror story. The actual story is "A hole in a mountain carved in your exact shape calls out to you and you must listen. You know nothing about its origin. You must go in." The consequences can never be as scary as that element of the story alone.

Perhaps some of the impact of Junji Ito's work comes from his willingness to engage with the horror as if it were fact. The terrible things don't have to happen in a closed box with the outside world ignorant to what happened - even if that is sometimes the case. The supernatural is often reported on the news; the whole community is aware of it. Junji Ito isn't afraid of expanding scope.

Anyway. I had been thinking about what an excellent horror story he would have written if he'd been given the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs rights.

on the topic of disabled characters, though, i think a LOT of artists give characters mobility aids that their character wouldn't actually benefit from using.

i'm sort of having a mild brain fog moment rn so i can't fully articulate what i'm on about, but i think a lot of able-bodied artists view things like canes and crutches as interchangeable. and they often don't know enough about the wide range of mobility aids to make an informed decision about what their character might actually use based on their disability

i also think that aids like walkers and rollators are sort of viewed as "cringe" on some level, and many people view them to be "just for old people," so many artists will opt for giving a character who has full-body pain and fatigue a cane (which, in many cases, can potentially WORSEN full-body pain) instead. and a lot of people don't realize that most wheelchair users are able to walk, so they don't consider it an option for characters with chronic pain

idk it's kind of frustrating. i've genuinely never, ever seen a character that uses a rollator before. not once. i cannot name a single one. i know of multiple ocs who are described to have full-body pain, dizziness, and fatigue that are drawn as cane users and are never shown with wheelchairs or walkers, though

it's also sort of sad? i've been diagnosed since i was twelve years old, and i only heard of rollators LAST YEAR. and that was only because i saw one irl and immediately asked what it was. i wonder how many disabled people out there don't even know it's an option solely because they're completely underrepresented online and in media

if you're a creative with a disabled oc, PLEASEEE check out this link. it's a very nice and detailed guide for telling which mobility aids suit someone's needs best. it's incredibly important to make the right choice for your character! mobility aids tell you a LOT about someone's lived experience. picking the right one will communicate to your audience #1 what your character goes through #2 that you UNDERSTAND what your character goes through!

I wanted to point out that Nurse Hadley, the woman in this video, is a hospice nurse. This is what people say to and about patients who don't have long left to live. The fear of addiction and dependence on pain medication is so strong that people deny their literally dying family members proper pain management. You're never going to please the "but what about addiction" people, ignore them and take the meds you need to function.

ive seen some posts lately about children having almost no rights, and also some posts about how us-centricism is harmful but especially when information posts only apply to the US but not identified as such

i'm in the usa also and unfortunately i am not as well versed in this topic as i should be, but children's utter lack of rights is, if not 100% unique to the USA, at least very much a local issue, and that seems worth acknowledging.

the united nations has something called the Convention on the Rights of the Child from 1989. children do legitimately have rights under this convention at minimum in 196 countries. the united states is the only member of the UN who has not ratified it.

i'm under the impression that this is one of those things that is pretty universal outside the US but almost unheard of within it, and those of us in the US take it as a given that children do not have any specific country-wide protections regarding autonomy whatsoever
