So, guess we’re starting this now!

Background Info on Me and This Account:

Hi, my name is Kwaz! Pronouns are she/any, and that’s all you really need to know about me personally! Obviously aside from the fact that I am a HUGE Octonauts fan!

It’s been my special interest for over 10 years, and I’ve been very active in the community since 2019 - 2020. I’m someone who loves to go on deep dives when I love something this much, so as a result my camera roll’s been chock FULL of various concept art, storyboards, character facts, etc. which can go as far back as over 20 years! I’ve never been able to find a way to share it with others that wasn’t me rambling nonsensically on various discord servers, so I figured queuing everything as a sideblog could be tons of fun!

It should be noted that not everything on this account is obscure or unknown to many! I’m not claiming to post rare things all the time. But knowledge of Octonauts/Meomi and its 2 decades of history vary from fan-to-fan, with some not even being fully aware of the books or the characters origins, and I would love for this blog to make that information more accessible and in the best quality possible :)

Octonauts Desktop Wallpaper, released in December 2004.

This is the first art Meomi had ever released of all the Octonauts characters in one image, and one of the earliest art for the Octonauts brand overall. Interesting details include Tunip eating snow (ft. a miscoloured yellow muzzle), Dashi’s hairclips being blue instead of pink, Tweak’s look of utter rage, and Shellington just sitting behind their fort reading up on snowflakes and studying the snow :)

But of course, there’s an elephant in the room to discuss, and that’s Professor Inkling’s debut. He’s easily the most different from his final design and role in the franchise, even more than Dashi! The description shares one of two temporary names he’s been given before “Professor Inkling”, which is Commander ‘O’! He is dressed in a unique yellow-striped blue collar and a large hat covering his Dumbo Octopus ears, which were still there! He was always intended to be that species due to Meomi’s instantaneous fondness of the creature after watching Blue Planet, a 2001 series that was a major inspiration for the Octonauts throughout the wallpaper drawings. Clearly, Inkling wasn’t the same library-bound elder we know today just yet.

Octonauts Desktop Wallpaper, released in November 2004.

This is the first art Meomi had ever released of Peso Penguin, Shellington Sea Otter, Dashi Dog, Tweak Bunny, and Tunip, and one of the earliest art for the Octonauts brand overall. Depicted is a lovely scene of the characters having breakfast together on a rainy morning, introducing the more domestic side of the brand that had a particularly important focus during its pre-animation era. Interesting details include how MASSIVE Tunip is compared to Peso (or the latter’s just That Small), with the two about to play a game of checkers, and the meal the other characters are having. Tweak eating carrots becomes a staple of her character, but I believe this is the last time we see Dashi eating dog treats 😅

Octonauts Desktop Wallpaper, released in October 2004.

This is some of the first art Meomi had ever released of Captain Barnacles, Kwazii Cat, and Peso Penguin, and one of the earliest art for the Octonauts brand overall. Interesting details include the crew’s intimidating, sharp swords (which Peso quickly drops in fear of what’s in front of them), the treasure chest that lay in a crevice of the sunken ship, and the ghosts they encounter, perfect for the piece’s debut during the spookiest month of the year. The ghosts leader seems vaguely cat-shaped, with the rest being more akin to bunnies or another creature of sorts. I’m particularly fond of the unique skull-shaped one.

Octonauts Desktop Wallpaper, released in September 2004.

This is some of the first art Meomi had ever released of Shellington Sea Otter, Dashi, and Tweak Bunny, and one of the earliest art for the Octonauts brand overall. A noticeable part of this piece is Dashi’s progression in her design since her debut piece. She now has her iconic hairstyle and clips, but is shown wearing a blue apron-esque piece of clothing around her waist instead of a pink skirt. Her legs not being covered by the latter clothing she wears in her present design allows for a better look at her unique body type, which is long like a Dachshund and fairly similar to the way Shellington appears.

Other interesting details include Tweak’s lack of her signature headband or tool belt, Shellington’s MASSIVE magnifying glass, and the description of the piece implying Dashi may not like carrots, much to Tweak’s dismay, who seemed like she wanted to give her gal-pal a thoughtful gift. The kelp-mushroom forest they’re exploring is also pretty cool looking.

As a quick notice: While currently I’m only uploading the Desktop Wallpapers, when I post the full collection (by tomorrow or Wednesday?) I will move onto other various content that won’t need to be organized by year as such :) I hope what I have shared has still been interesting nonetheless!

Another thing I’d like to notify you all about: I’ve been very busy lately, and I won’t even be online for a few weeks this coming month because of summer camp, so all of these posts are in a queue to upload around 2 - 3 times a day! The goal is to queue as far as how long I’m gone, which I think will be a fun challenge 😭

Octonauts Desktop Wallpaper, released in June 2004.

This is the first art Meomi released in this set that includes exclusively pre-introduced characters, and is nevertheless one of the earliest art for the Octonauts brand overall. Interesting details include the air balloon-esque contraption they’re riding, Shellington using a spyglass/telescope instead of his signature magnifying glass he’s seen with in future art, and Kwazii’s name being written in its finalized form in the description of the piece (when it was originally “Kwazi”). Shellington is also referred to as “Dr.” in the text, which isn’t a common title he’s attached to, just like Kwazii with his Lieutenant title.

Octonauts Desktop Wallpaper, released in May 2004.

This is the first art Meomi had ever released of Dashi, the Octopod, and the Gup-E, and one of the earliest art for the Octonauts brand overall. Interesting details include Dashi’s complete lack of hair in this older design (she seems to be the character that took the longest to get to a finalized design), a VERY different looking Gup-E design Peso is driving (as per usual), and the pod’s held up by the Octopod’s appendages being used as entrances for the Gups instead of going through the Octo-hatch, meaning they weren’t used as bedrooms or for recreational activities yet. Overall, the Octopod can be seen with quite a different layout if you look close enough at its smaller details, like the antennae atop it!

Dashi was also initially introduced as “Sauci”, a name that she’d have until being reintroduced in the animated series in 2010. The reason for this change was a matter of the name’s inspiration. Sauci was a nod to her species, a sausage dog, but not all regions use that name for her breed. Due to this, her name was changed to “Dashi” for Dachshund, which is a more commonly recognized name for the dog.

This is the first art Meomi had ever released of Peso Penguin and Shellington Sea Otter’s final designs, and one of the earliest art for the Octonauts brand overall. Interesting details include the distinct purple environment, along with the goal of the mission being to rescue a pearl. Shellington has actually debuted in an earlier named appearance within previous Meomi art, but that’s a subject for a different post ;)
