True Love - Griefer HS AU p3
“It makes me so happy to see that Brad finally found someone he wants to be around.” Mayor Thaniyel mused, setting a plate of cookies on the coffee table in front of you.
You reached for one almost instantly, trying to distract yourself with the mayor’s heavenly baking. Brad sat beside you, arm slung around your shoulders like it belonged there. You sighed, unable to suppress the grimace twisting your lips.
It had been a few months since you two became ‘official’. Official, of course, in the sense that basically the entire student body witnessed him kissing you without permission. You had no idea where to even begin trying to convince everyone that you weren’t dating.
So you were forced to put up with it, letting Brad hold your hand in the hallways and steal sneaky kisses on the cheek in passing. You’d learned to disassociate from it at this point, trying your best to focus on your studies rather than the annoying douchebag sitting beside you.
“You done yet?” He asked, resting his head on your shoulder. You ignored him, filling out another problem on the worksheet you were doing.
Brad rolled his eyes at your silence, leaning back on the couch with a groan. “Can you finish already? I wanna do something.”
“You can wait until I finish this assignment.” You huffed, pushing him off. Brad let out a soft grunt as he was pushed away, eyes narrowing in irritation. He was about to say something else when you set your pencil down and turned to him with crossed arms.
“There. Now what do you want?”
Brad blinked, scoffing before leaning back against the couch. “I dunno. Just thought we could like…do something.”
“You wanna throw rocks at people’s houses?”
You deadpanned. “..That’s your idea of fun?”
Apparently, it was. Brad had dragged you outside towards some random house in town and was now urging you to throw rocks at the side.
“C’mon! You’re being so boring!” He pressed, chucking a pebble at a second story window. You rolled your eyes, crossing your arms.
“I don’t get how you find enjoyment in this.” You sighed.
Suddenly the window Brad was pelting with rocks flew open. Hiro stuck his head out, squinting down at the two of you.
You froze, suddenly wanting to die on the spot. Out of all the houses Brad could choose to throw rocks at, why was it his?
A flush quickly rose to your face as you lunged forward to stop Brad from chucking another rock. “Dude! Don’t throw a rock at his face!”
Hiro blinked, staring down at the two of you. “...[Name]..?”
You stopped dead, silently praying for the ground to swallow you whole. Hiro smiled, though it dimmed slightly when looking at Brad. “..Why are you throwing rocks at my window?”
“Brad thought it was funny.” You grimaced, elbowing him in the side. Brad grunted, rolling his eyes.
You shot him a glare, face still burning with humiliation. Gods, why did it have to be Hiro!?
You turned away, facing Hiro with a smile too big for the situation. “I’m sorry, Brad’s just being an asshole—”
You hadn’t exactly had time to speak with Hiro after…everything. Brad made extra sure that you were basically glued to his side, and during the few times you could speak to Hiro, you found you lacked the guts to do so.
It was like everything was falling apart before your eyes—you met a new kid who you thought was really cool, only to be forcefully stapled to the worst guy you’ve ever met.
Brad rolled his eyes at your comment, too busy picking up more rocks to chuck at unsuspecting houses. Hiro glanced between the two of you, crossing his arms.
“...Must be real fun being stuck with him all the time.” He mused.
You glanced back at him, shoulders dropping with exhaustion. “Oh my god.” You groaned, dragging your hands down your face. “It’s even worse now. Everyone thinks we’re dating!”
Hiro’s face scrunched up like he had bitten into something sour. “..What?”
“Yeah,” You scoffed, clenching your jaw. “After you were taken to the nurse’s office he kissed me in front of everyone.”
There was a long beat of silence. You glanced up, thinking for a moment that Hiro was ignoring you or something. To your surprise he was staring at you, face twisted in a mixture of rage and concern.
“He kissed me.” You groaned, shuddering at the feeling of his lips on yours. “Which, by the way, he’s a terrible kisser. Not that I, like, know or anything but—” You cut yourself off, hating the way you couldn’t seem to be normal around Hiro. “Yeah. It wasn’t fun.”
Hiro suddenly grabbed your face, checking you all over. “He kissed you!? Are you okay!? Did he try anything else!?”
You yelped at the sudden contact, cheeks heating up to a concerning degree. “I-I’m fine now! It wasn’t like he tried to like—I dunno—”
Hiro sighed, pulling back with a sheepish expression. “S-Sorry. I just—god, that’s really ######. Are you sure you’re okay?”
You tried to ignore the way your stomach churned with butterflies at the concern in his voice. “..Yeah. It just sucks because now everyone thinks we’re together. Brad’s been milking the entire thing, and now even my mom thinks I’m dating him.”
“Why don’t you say something?” Hiro asked, his eyebrows creasing with concern. “Wouldn’t your mom go ballistic or something?”
“I—” You paused, sighing in exhaustion. “I don’t know. She’s been so happy that I’ve finally ‘made a friend’ but that ‘friend’ is actively holding me hostage.” You murmured, crossing your arms. “..I don’t want to let her down.”
Hiro frowned, placing a hand on his hip. “I get that…but don’t you think she’d want you to be safe first and foremost?”
You held your breath, exhaling sharply. “..I guess.”
“Plus, you’ve got me. I’d like to say that we’re friends.”
You paused, still facing away from him. Thankfully so, because your face was bright red again. “..Y-yeah. Yeah..”
Another wave of silence passed over you two, but it was comfortable now. You shifted your weight between your feet, unable to meet Hiro’s gaze.
The boy watched you closely, his heart fluttering in his chest. Jeez, you were cute—
“[NAME]!” Brad practically screamed from across the street. “STOP TALKING WITH THAT LOSER AND HELP ME CHUCK ROCKS AT THESE SHITHOLES!”
You flinched at the sound, groaning with a roll of your eyes. “..Guess I should go then.” You grumbled, reluctant to part from Hiro’s comforting presence.
“W-wait—” Hiro reached out, grabbing your hand before you could go. You froze, looking between your joined hands and Hiro’s face. Both of you were flushed, eyes wide with shock and disbelief. Like neither of you could process what had just happened.
Hiro pulled back with a strangled laugh, tucking his hands behind his back with a smile too wide for his face. “Ha-HA—! S-sorry! Uhm—” He stammered, stepping away before gathering his thoughts. “I…just, uh—you wanna hang out sometime? Just…to talk?”
You hesitated, glancing between him and Brad. Hiro noticed, his smile flattening. “Forget about Brad—he can cry about it later. I’m asking if you wanna hang out.”
“I…” You felt like you were going to throw up—in the best way possible. Your heart raced in your chest, stomach feeling like a butterfly sanctuary. “Y-yeah. I’d….I’d love that, actually.”
Hiro lit up. “GREAT!—I mean uh—cool. Uh, yeah. Meet me at my place after school?”
You nodded, unable to contain your giddy grin. “Heh—y-yeah. Yeah, sounds good.”
The two of you just stood there for a moment, staring into each other’s eyes with stupid grins. Unfortunately the moment was shattered when Brad stormed up to you and yanked you away by your arm.
You yelped, hissing softly in pain. “Dude—! What the hell!?”
Brad scoffed, glaring at Hiro. “You were taking forever.” He grumbled, pulling you away.
You just sighed, casting a final glance at Hiro before Brad pulled you down a different street.
You don’t think you’ve ever been this antsy before. You sat in the final class of the day, eyes constantly flicking between your notebook and the clock on the wall. Seconds stretched into what felt like hours, the butt of your pen tapping impatiently against the paper.
You were gonna meet up with Hiro today. He told you to meet up at his place…which meant you were gonna have to take a different route from school…which meant you were gonna have to somehow get Brad off your tail.
You exhaled slowly, bouncing your leg anxiously as your mind raced with possible solutions. Maybe you could run to the gates before he could catch up? That was doubtful, but…
Your phone buzzed in your pocket. You tensed, glancing around before carefully slipping it out of your pocket and checking it under your desk.
It was a message from Brad, who was ‘lovingly’ named ####face in your phone.
‘cant walk home wit u today. Dads got me doing sum stupid mayor #### with him’
You could’ve fallen off your chair in joy. Holy ####, that was perfect! You didn’t need to worry about getting Brad off your ass! Mr. Thaniyel did it for you!
Goodness, you loved that old man. You wished his son was as kind as he was.
The bell rang finally, prompting you to shoot out of your seat and hurriedly pack your bags. You were the first into the hallway, practically sprinting towards the gates while your heart raced in your chest.
Hiro was waiting outside, his face breaking into a smile when he saw you. You waved, running over with an equally stupid grin.
“Hey.” You said, ignoring the way you were already breathless next to him.
“Hey.” Hiro said back, equally as breathless. The two of you began walking, silence stretching between the two of you like a net. It was awkward. Neither of you knew what to say.
“So uh..” You trailed off, trying to break the silence. “...How was your day?”
“It was good.” Hiro nodded, his arms stiff at his sides. “Very…educating.”
You snorted, playing with the straps of your bag. “..So what did you have planned for today?” You asked after a moment, kicking a small rock across the sidewalk.
“Well…I wanted you to meet my parents.” Hiro muttered, stiffening when he realized how his words could’ve sounded. “Uh! Just cause like—! Y-You’re my friend, and they wanted to get to know you!”
You nodded slowly, a small smile on your face. “Maybe I should get you to meet my mom then. Might get her to stop talking about Brad all the time.” You sighed.
Hiro glanced at you with a small frown, hesitantly placing a hand on your shoulder. “..Well Brad isn’t here right now, is he?”
You took a deep breath, unconsciously relaxing under Hiro’s touch. “..yeah.”
Hiro suddenly stopped, prompting you to pause as well. “Here we are.” He said, gesturing to his house.
You smiled, following after him as he walked up to the front door and pushed it open. The inside was homey, not exactly extravagant, but very clearly lived in.
“I’m home!” Hiro called out, leading you through the house and into the living room. There was a man sitting on the couch, legs crossed with his eyes trained on the pages of a book. He looked up, slipping a bookmark between the pages with a warm smile.
“Hey, kiddo.” His eyes turned to you. “Who’s your friend?”
Hiro stiffened, tucking his hands behind his back. “Ah—”
“I’m [Name].” You stepped in, waving with a polite smile. “It’s nice to meet you.”
Hiro’s father smiled wider, shooting a knowing glance his son’s way. Hiro flushed, looking away quickly.
Another set of footsteps could be heard coming down the stairs nearby, revealing a woman stepping into the living room. Her eyes locked onto the both of you, a giddy smile spreading on her face.
“Oh, Hiro! Is this the friend you’ve been talking about!?” She exclaimed eagerly, walking over to you.
You glanced at Hiro, a smile quirking your lips. “You’ve been talking about me?”
Hiro jolted, looking away with an anxious laugh. “Uh—!”
“All good things, I promise!” His mother stepped in quickly, patting her son’s shoulder. “His father and I were just so worried when we moved here that he wouldn’t have anyone to hang out with. Especially because we transferred in the middle of the school year.”
You nodded, scratching the back of your head. “Yeah, I actually moved here only a few months ago now. My mom was worried about the exact same thing.”
Hiro’s mother nodded along with you, her eyes softening. “Well, I’m glad you two found each other!” She chirped, clasping her hands together.
Hiro just covered his face, taking a shuddering breath before speaking up. “Y-yeah, uh, anyways we were just gonna hang out in my room for a bit—”
“Oh! Then don’t mind us!” his mother gasped, shuffling over to her husband. “You two have fun!” She called, waving as Hiro just groaned and led you up the stairs.
“Sorry about my mom..” Hiro sighed, face still red with embarrassment as he pushed open the door to his room. “She’s always so all over the place..”
You snickered, shaking your head. “It’s no problem. I know how that goes.”
“Yeah.” Hiro chuckled breathlessly, slipping his backpack off his shoulders and setting it by his bed. His room was somewhat cluttered, covered with various posters and knick knacks. You stepped in, looking around with an approving nod.
“System of a Down?” You hummed, glancing at one of his posters. “Didn’t realize you were into that kind of music.”
Hiro chuckled, kicking his shoes off. “Yeah. You listen to them too?”
“Yep.” You nodded, setting your bag on the floor and taking a seat on the other side of the bed. The silence persisted for a long moment, neither of you knowing exactly what to say.
“..So, uh. Are you..sure you’re okay?” Hiro spoke up. Turning to face you.
You looked up, tilting your head. “What do you mean?”
“I mean like—with Brad, and everything…”
You sighed, grimacing as you looked to the side. “..Yeah, for the most part. It’s just…exhausting.” You muttered, picking at your nails. “I have to keep pretending around him. If I push him away too hard he gets upset and…” You paused, tugging on your hoodie sleeves. “..He gets pissy.”
Hiro creased his eyebrows, shuffling to sit closer to you. “Has he hurt you?”
Your mouth went dry. “I…”
Hiro gently placed a hand over yours, stopping you from picking at your nails. “..Can I roll up your sleeves?”
You stared at him, eyes wide. Words caught in your throat, and all you could do was nod. Hiro gave you a reassuring smile, pushing the fabric of your sleeves up your arms.
What was revealed was an ugly tapestry of bruises. Fingerprints. Hiro’s breath hitched, his eyes widening. You looked away, shoulders hunching in shame.
“..Hey.” Hiro placed his other hand on your shoulder, trying to get you to relax. “Don’t be ashamed.” He whispered, letting you pull your sleeve back down. You let out a shaky breath, quickly wiping your eyes.
“S-sorry.” You mumbled, unable to face him.
“Don’t be sorry.” Hiro responded quickly, his hands hovering over you with hesitation. “He hurt you. That’s not your fault.”
You nodded weakly, but you didn’t relax. Hiro pursed his lips, glancing around before pulling you into a hug. You tensed, eyes widening as your heart practically exploded in your chest. “Wh—”
“It’s gonna be okay.” Hiro murmured, squeezing you tighter before letting you go. He stared at you for a moment, blinking before his eyes widened. “I-I—I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to just—”
“It’s okay.” You laughed, shaking your head as you wiped your eyes. “I needed that.”
Hiro relaxed with a heavy sigh, clutching his head. “Oh thank god.”
You snorted, staring at your lap for a moment. You hesitated, scooching closer to Hiro’s side. The boy tensed, his cheeks heating up as your sides touched.
“..You know…” You trailed off, drumming your fingers on your thighs. “...When Brad kissed me in front of everyone..that was my first.”
Hiro tensed, looking over at you. “..I-It was?”
You nodded, frowning slightly. “..Yeah. I was so upset because I wanted my first kiss to be special. With someone I cared about.”
Hiro nodded slowly, his eyebrows creased. He stared at you, fingers clenching and unclenching.
“I just…” You sighed, cutting yourself off. “..I dunno. I guess what I’m trying to say is that…I care about you.”
Hiro flushed, eyes going wide. “Y-you do?”
You nodded, trying to cover your burning face. “I—ugh, that was so corny. Sorry.”
Hiro shook his head vehemently. “N-No! Don’t be sorry!” He yelped, reaching out for your shoulders. You turned to look at him, eyes locking for a long moment.
You two stared at each other, faces flushed and hearts beating rapidly. You didn’t realize you both were leaning in until your foreheads brushed against each other.
You jolted back, blinking rapidly as Hiro did the same. You both looked back at each other, eyes wide.
You huffed, suddenly growing frustrated with the back and forth. “Look—do you wanna kiss or no?”
Hiro straightened up, his eyes widening further. “I—uh—If that’s okay with you?”
You nodded, and the two of you both leaned in. It felt like years before your lips finally met, but when they did it was an explosion of emotion in your chest.
Neither of you really knew what to do, but even so it felt right. You melted into Hiro’s arms, wrapping your own around his torso as you tried to bury yourself in his warmth. You could feel his heart screaming in his chest, and you had no doubt he could feel yours as well.
You both pulled back with a gasp for air, faces flushed and eyes hazy. You met gazes, and soon started laughing together. Hiro pulled you into a hug, laughing breathlessly into your shoulder.
“Oh my god, you have no idea how scared I was.” He wheezed.
“Scared? I was terrified!” You cackled, clinging to him like a lifeline.
You both stayed like that for a long while, just enjoying each other’s embrace. It was nice. You wanted to stay like this.
“..I love you.” You murmured into his shoulder.
“I love you too..” Hiro whispered back.
You let yourself relax. You didn’t need to worry about Brad right now. You were safe. You were loved.
And that’s all that mattered right now.
I blacked out and then this was written uuhhh
