The OCS would like to say a huge thanks to Fontanelle for having us in residence for the last year or so. What a fantastic, inspiring, supportive and welcoming space, pushing the Adelaide boundaries. This show, Leisure, is a bit of a summary of my time there. It opens tomorrow night and includes some of the brilliant artists whom have studios out the back, have crossed paths and conversations with me at Fonty, and a few other artists from my other ventures too. Mady Stentiford // Making things. Sunday 17 May, 2 - 5pm On the last day of Mady’s show, take home a #souvenir. She will be making some new weird and wonderful objects for her upcoming #exhibition. In 'Microwave your undies and freeze your broad-brim', Mady’s work revolves around her travels. She combines collected and found objects to in a visual recreation of her personal and shared experiences on the road, just as bizarre and wonderful as are some of her stories. Anna Horne // A Chat. A Meditation. 6-7pm, Tuesday 12th May 2015 @fontanelle_gallery We're inviting you to #experience Anna's current show Lightweight Heavy through a whole new experience. Close your eyes. Come and sit inside of Anna's exhibition as you are guided through a 20 minute meditation by the wonderful Naomi Keyte. Experience the physical nature of the #objects, their tension, their gravity, the lightness and heaviness of the work through immersing yourself in a similar physical and mental state - a meditation, inside of the #exhibition. Anna will give a short #talk about her practice and work before the session, and will be around to chat afterwards also. A Film?

Matt is from New Zealand. Matt lives in Melbourne. Matt couldn't be here to hang out and chat with us about his work during the exhibition but that’s okay. This is even better. What a great way to close the show.

Instead of asking Matt to hold an artists talk, I thought it might be interesting to get to know Matt as the artist, the person, from a different angle. Ultimately all artists and their work are informed in-part by their own lives, interests, the places they have lived, been, seen, experienced etc. even if vicariously. I asked Matt for something he would like to share with people. And Matt wanted to share this:

A conversation?

Matt’s paintings are big. They are bold strokes, blocks of colour and flicks of seemingly random, yet purposefully placed paint. Do they tell a story? Do the titles inform the work? In many ways, the works speak for themselves. The titles might hint to the viewer of allegory or meaning, but they might obscure them further too. The photos nestled subtly yet intentionally in Wrestling Posters Cause Fights are an interesting additional contextualization. I still want to keep a bit of mystery around it all though, and in particular it’s the titles that intrigue me, keep me guessing. What is the “Six dollar fifty man” all about for example?

Matt tells me most of his titles don’t relate too much too his work. They are not imbued with meaning, nor even attached at all in some cases. It might be a quote from a book, or a line movie he’s watched. Just something that catches his attention.

I get that.

Just as we might not always know what a work ‘means’ or where it has evolved from, Matt makes the point that “Six Dollar Fifty Man” (directed by Mark Albiston and Louis Sutherland) is simply just one of his favourite films. It does remind him of living in New Zealand, and of the trials of being an artist living in New Zealand. You can read into that or not. But do watch the film. It’s short, and it’s great.

Welcome, to the first in a series of Artist hang-outs to accompany the exhibition program at Fontanelle. Not your traditional artists talk, these events are aimed at breaking down the audience/artist barrier. Get to know the artist from a different perspective. Maybe it’s abstract, maybe it’s personal. It might inform their work. It might have nothing to do with their work. Come. Meet the artist:

Kate Power // Her Reading. You Reading. 2-4pm, Saturday 18th April Accompanying her current show ‘All that effort and desire’, Kate invites you for a reading. Kate will read aloud from some of the books and texts that resonate with her and her work most. You too are invited to bring material to share, to read aloud or for Kate to read aloud. Kate loves to read. Books or texts in fiction or non-fiction, graphic novels or even articles especially relating ideas of intimacy, social expectation, sexuality (themes that are present within Kate’s work) might be a consideration, but this session is open to all ideas and styles of writing. We will have an open discussion around the texts after each reading. Bring some words. Bring yourself. See you there!

BIG NEWS! the OCS is digging in its heels for a little while in its new home at Fontanelle!

Now in its third year, Fontanelle is a creative hub that provides practical support for its artists through an inclusive studio community along with a gallery program that challenges existing gallery modes. By curating and presenting innovative exhibitions, it seeks to offer contemporary visual art of a high standard that is rigorous, open and accessible. Fontanelle is committed to supporting emerging, mid-career and established artists and curators through the presentation of contemporary visual art in an environment where play and experimentation is encouraged. Through an open attitude, it welcomes all visitors to the gallery and is actively engaging with the community through artist led workshops, forums and public art projects. Fontanelle will offer the Open Curatorial Studio late in 2014 as an active platform that encourages this new dialogue.

Fontanelle believes this residency will be timely for Adelaide in a moment of growth and development, and where Artists are looking outside of the conventional gallery space for new platforms to develop and to be seen and heard.

The OCS Residency at Fontanelle will be a meeting point to overcome some of the barriers that may exist between the artist and the curator. The artists are invited into the curators’ workspace, which encourages new forms of collaboration. Also, the studio will pose critical questions in an ongoing online group discussion (check our FB and HERE for regular updates). This will be the point of departure each week for research and outreach, so, as well as being a working space, the studio aims to hold a number of talks, events, screenings, happenings, small dinners, discussions, collaborations and in-progress exhibitions with industry professionals and mid-career and emerging artists/curators/movers/thinkers/makers. At the culmination of the project the aim is to produce a publication on the process and outcome of the studio.

No need to travel all the way to New York! We would all love to attend one of ICI's famous Curatorial Intensives of course, but for anyone in Australia; you have the opportunity to attend a fantastic program of critical discourse on curatorial practice here in Sydney. Apart from a few closed classes for selected participants, there are a number of free talks you can register for. Led by three established curators, the talks will focus specifically on the Asia-Pacific region. Developed by 4A to "encourage professional advancement amongst early career Australian cultural practitioners with an interest in curatorial practice", we are very much looking forward to some dynamic discussions taking place this weekend...congratulations to the selected participants of the workshop sessions also!

DARK IN HERE. OH SO DARK.

A recent spate of exhibitions concentrated on all things dark are calling our attention. Cynical, tongue in cheek, pessimistic, confronting and satirical reactions on a political and social uneasiness (present and past) seems globally rife and in vogue. And here is art that's making us scratch our heads, look, listen and think outside ourselves. For once. From Adelaide to Tasmania and Berlin, darkness come into the light.

A series of publications examining the artists role as curator has just been announced by Mousse.

We have delved into these blurry boundaries before here at TOCS, but this is the perfect chance to re-open the discussion.

If you are an artist - what are your experiences of curatorial process, and how have you challenged what might be seen as the 'conventional' structure of an exhibition?

If you are a curator - similarly, what are your experiences of working with artists and challenging the conventions of exhibition making in alignment with or by pushing your artists work to create new platforms to experience art?

Synonyms for Survey?

Following recent criticisms of the exhibition Australia at the Royal Academy in London, and the arrival of America: Painting a Nation at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, we question what these types of survey exhibitions really wish to achieve, and what they are trying to express to the ‘outside’ world...maybe Survey is not quite the right word anymore.

Permission To Be Global/Prácticas Globales: Latin American Art from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection recent exhibition is set to open next week, and has taken a slightly more global approach to the usually regionalist trend of the survey show. Looking outward rather than in, the artists –though all from Latin American countries focus on "what it means "to be global," when free and equal cultural exchange is still limited by the power dynamics of globalization".

Thoughts, comments, or experiences on the place and importance of ‘survey’ show in a global context (geographically or non geographically based) are invited for submission above.

Berlin Art Week

It's Art Week here at our base in Berlin and the program is huge.

Tonight, we recommend getting along to DEMONSTRATE! Thomas Eller in Conversation with David Elliott at Berlinische Galerie, 7pm.

David Elliot is a freelance curator and writer. He was artistic director of the 17th Biennale of Sydney and the 1st Kiev Biennal, and the director of The Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, of the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, founding director of the Mori Museum in Tokyo and of the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art.
