“Boundary” The area I live in is always attributed to Cherokee settlers. However, the land was actually a mutual boundary line between the #Cherokee and Catawba. Contested frequently, this region experienced more turmoil as white settlers moved in. To add insult to injury, Catawba lands were frequently claimed by Europeans, marked by prominent signs/symbols of Christianity or Early Pioneers. Locals in my area whisper that anyone living on lands not properly acquiesced from #Catawba peoples is dangerous or “bad” land. There are a few strange boundary markers in the valley I live. We’re they here to define neutral ground, to prevent someone coming in, or go prevent something from leaving? #Abandoned: This is gonna be a long one...So get ready for #StoryTime. We live on a large cluster of acres deep in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The property butts up against an old logging road that winds up to a small mountain. Along this logging road lay the remains of various forms of settlement and industry. Cast aside, whether in a hurry, disgust, fear, laziness or desperation. Staring at piles of chainsaws dropped in pairs at least 40-50 years ago, or an old tractor that predates my father-in-law, it’s as though attempts to tame this thick wood were all in vain. The crumbling logging road I hike is barely discernible in some parts, and I often get lost while trying to explore. There’s noises, shadows, rock piles, and sounds that can’t be explained. Sometimes, there’s NO noises, no wind, only the shadows that you hope are tree branches reaching towards you. When this happens, I usually tuck tail and run North back towards familiar landmarks. I’m brave and stupid, but not that brave. If I’m lucky, maybe it’s just a bobcat or mountain lion, but what if it’s not? I’ve spent enough time in different woods and environments to tell the difference between man and beast, but what happens out here can’t be blamed on either. I’m not one for extraordinary #paranormal conclusions, and to say there’s something strange with this land takes a lot of second-guessing and a lot of #HighStrangeness. We’ve lived out here for about a year, and I don’t talk about this lightly. But since we’ve all got nothing but time these days, maybe I’ll take this opportunity to discover what’s going on in my forest.
