Honestly joker!yuu present themselves as a normal guy, he is polite and Essentially very "normal". The first years would often be suspicious of him hiding something because nobody can be so average as him, he simply doesn't attract much attention–but honestly I think that was his plan to not make himself stand out too much and blend in to not get caught.
Ace would brush off ren!yuu at first, they seem to be a normal person–there's nothing interesting about ren!yuu. Meanwhile, deuce is so glad to finally meet somebody who is sane and normal at this school ( he's not ). But if they find out, ace would absolutely find ren!yuu cool–the PHANTOM THIEF has been his best friend all this time, GIVE HIM AN AUTOGRAPH. Ace and deuce would be taken aback by the secret, not expecting the most boring guy at school is the infamous thief not to mention ren!yuus persona–while ace is enjoying it, deuce is wondering whether or not if there's anybody at this school who is sane.
Cater would sense something off from ren!yuu but wouldn't pry into it because he knows that it's something he shouldn't know, low-key ren!yuu joker persona is cool. It's like an action movie character was brought to twisted wonderland, when he saw ren!yuu transformation for the first time and how fire engulfed him–cater is visibly confused on what's happening and when he saw the transformation his jaw dropped.
Trey and ren!yuu rarely interact and frankly even if he did interact, it's gonna be boring. But... He does enjoy how civil ren!yuu is, even though the conversation is gonna be boring –at least he is comfortable being around with ren!yuu. Although trey would find it suspicious on how ren!yuu is able to sneak up on him, honestly he is concerned about ren!yuu putting the others as well as himself in danger so he often checks up on him.
Riddle doesn't trust ren!yuu, even if he looks normal or follows the rules and is not causing any trouble. Ren!yuu is definitely hiding something, the first time he saw ren!yuu persona–hes instantly on guard as well as overwhelmed by the sheer present and madness, ren!yuu shows–especially that mischievous smile. Even though ren!yuu punish the injustice, riddle view his ways as to radical or chaotic–such madness is not welcomed by the queen of hearts.
Savanaclaw
Always have something prepared on his sleeves, even though he always wish to settle things in a polite manner without causing to much damage or chaos it doesn't mean he does not enjoy chaos. He simply does it for etiquette, but he does enjoy it. Many would simply underestimate or look down on him, but he doesn't mind in fact he finds it hilarious when the same bullies are losing themselves over a missing item.
Jack would actually get along with ren!yuu at first, viewing him as an awkward person. He's a pretty nice as well as reliable person on assignments and teamwork, but honestly jack could see that ren!yuu is constantly holding back. Jack would notice that ren!yuu is more athletic as well as experience in acrobats more than he puts off, when jack finds out about ren!yuu persona and its transformation –he thought that he was overbloting. He would share the same distaste over injustice the same as joker!yuu but his method is something he doesn't agree with.
Ruggie would find ren!yuu as an average guy with nothing special, but his sense would immediately be on guard when he realized that ren!yuu manage to sneak up on him without alerting or making a single sound. When he finds out about the phantom thief, ruggie would look up at ren!yuu instantly. As well as not going against him, in fact ruggie would purposely bury evidence to help–and in return ren!yuu would leave gifts as a thank you. Both of them would work silently, partners in crime as long as ruggie gets half of the prize.
Leona would smell something off with ren!yuu but then again, his normal appearance didn't think anything off but for the mean time Leona would keep his guard up around ren!yuu. Leona actually quite enjoys ren!yuu trickster nature, he finds it amusing. He let it slide because Leona doesn't mind ren!yuu stealing things from corrupt nobles or literally anybody who commits injustice, he respects ren!yuu tactics as well as intelligence–he won't underestimate ren!yuu because there's always a card up his sleeve.
Octavinelle
Recently at school multiple historic artifacts and treasures have been missing, Crowley is crying in his own river of tears due to the losses. While joker!yuu just at the side holding a box of tissues with a smirk, Crowley is in big trouble for losing such artifacts as well as his lack of competence of preserving history –meanwhile the missing items are somewhere stored at the ramshackle dorm.
Azul would greatly underestimate ren!yuu viewing him as nothing but ordinary, unfortunately ren!yuu was feeling a little Petty that day because of the exams. So imagine being Azul, jade and Floyd on a random day, turn on the lights of Mostro lounge and everything to the furniture and decor is gone the entire cafe was gutted to the kitchen to office.... Full blown panic, Azul is absolutely going through the seven stages of grief and is willing to involve the authorities. Ren!yuu come out and admit to the crime while also having the contract AND the photo from the museum, Azul now would avoid pissing off ren!yuu but.... If he's service is available, Azul would look forward to hiring him unfortunately that's impossible.
To be honest, jade is low-key impressed and also interested. He assume ren!yuu is like any other person but he manages to blow his expectations as well as caught off, well played~. He's honestly impressed how ren!yuu or the joker is able to gut all of Mostro lounge in one night, without alerting anyone or the security. He hopes that ren!yuu is willing to answer some of his questions about the operations and share some tactics–jade simply finds his presence thrilling and a new puzzle.
Floyd would absolutely find ren!yuu presence as fun and interesting, honestly he enjoys the madness and insanity that he brings. But honestly he wishes that he shows it more because Floyd wants to see it more often, the first time ren!yuu transforms with the fire engulfing him as well as summoning his persona–floyd would know that day is the day he would never get bored of NRC because there's ren!yuu.
Scarabia
Recently many people can be seen entering at the ramshackle dorm, as if ren!yuu hosting secret meetings. People would not put mind into these meetings because they thought it's casual meetings between friends or late night study sessions that's what he says, these meetings would be held secretly and outside of the school sometimes due to avoiding suspicion. It seems that ren!yuu is acquitted with multiple people outside of school.
Kalim actually finds ren!yuu quite nice, even though he sometimes may be awkward–ren!yuu seems to actually care as well as very observant about his surroundings, caring deeply about grim and the others maintaining loyalty. When kalim see ren!yuu persona the first thing he thought was how cool ren!yuu is, he's like a hero. Honestly despite his wealthy background, kalim remains humble which is a trait ren!yuu enjoy–ren!yuu would often keep a watch for kalim.
Jamil doesn't trust ren!yuu but it seems he's useful for his plan. Oh how he underestimated him, Jamil would instantly tense about ren!yuu. Jamil honestly see ren!yuu ways are naturally necessary as well as more realistic not to mention extremely cunning, he's like a cat–sassy and yet quiet and cunning. Jamil would never underestimate ren!yuu as well as the grin he had when transforming and summoning his persona.
Pomifiore
Recently there's been sight seeing of a phantom thief amongst the night, many historical items gone missing as well as the exposure of many corrupt nobles and criminals come to light. The phantom thief would leave in a flashy way, the phantom thief would present himself as an elegant and flashy trickster even though leaving in a flashy way still manages to get away which bothers the police. The phantom thief is seen as a vigilante yet also a future threat for corrupt nobles and criminals, vil would take inspiration to make a movie of the thief.
Vil would not approve what ren!yuu is doing but.... At least he does it with style. Originally, he thought that ren!yuu is an unpolished potato but inside is a gold mine of flavor. Honestly, ren!yuu would be a good gymnastics but it seems he's not interested in anything other than hes own "hobby" and "Job" as long as he's not causing any trouble then it's fine he guess. Ren!yuu is like a jester, a person who is seen as a fool but carries more than he puts off.
Rook and ren!yuu would get along very much, rook would notice about ren!yuu identity and found it beautiful. Rook is honestly interested in learning about the persona and how the transformation goes, he's first opinion on seeing ren!yuu–rook could immediately sense this trickster is hiding his teeth. Which would excite him, and rook wish to know more about ren!yuu–instead of asking questions, why don't he just start a chase game.
Epel would honestly relax with ren!yuu and when he transforms, epel wonders why most of the students in NRC are straight weird ( not in a bad way, of course ) honestly epel find ren!yuu overwhelming but soon relax because it doesn't change anything, despite being a phantom thief ren!yuu would remain to be epel friends. Epel would never judge ren!yuu, in fact he respects and admires how ren!yuu live–epel would imagine what it would be like running from the authorities living the moment, such a way to live.
Ignihyde
The first time when ren!yuu used his persona, the atmosphere would be tense. It's not classified as magic not to mention, how intense as well as abstract sometimes it looks. The persona can sometimes be mistaken as overblot because of the transformation but it isn't, idia is quite curious and wishes to study it but joker!yuu weren't at school grounds as well as his location remains unknown. Turns out, joker!yuu was already at the STYX HQ before rook and epel and managed not to get caught because he was disguised as a worker.
Idia would see ren!yuu as another normie but after the sight seeings of ren!yuu persona, STYX have been especially eyeing ren!yuu. Idia would honestly be creeped out on ren!yuu, you will never know when the phantom thief or joker strike. Idia would have thought that ren!yuu is just somebody who's interested in role play, but no he's legit. He's like a cat thief, tricking as well as getting away. Idia find it impressive how ren!yuu manage to sneak in without trouble, when seeing ren!yuu persona he thought that he's wielding a stand.
Ortho would find ren!yuu presence as a nice comfort, although he always maintains a distance because he is also observing ren!yuu. Ortho wishes to learn about the personas and the only way is to get close with ren!yuu but it seems he already knows Ortho's intentions were, but decided to put up with it because he simply enjoys the kid's presence.
Disamonia
Fashionable, confident and a trickster that's what the phantom thief is described as. Like I said, many would look up as well as against him. You can imagine an intense chase scene, where The ren!yuu is running from multiple enforcers while also giving a wink then disappearing. He perfectly sneaks back to the ramshackle dorm, and catches up on sleep. Ren!yuu would not tolerate injustice, every buried case and corruption would soon come to light.
Malleus would find ren!yuu's presence is intriguing, he's the first human who doesn't fear him yet also carries a power that is not native but dominating in twisted wonderland, when meeting his joker persona malleus would observe and wish to know. He would often have questions about ren!yuu and his persona, as well as how they manage to manifest. Although ren!yuu present himself as an ordinary guy, the joker flashy ways would make malleus amused as well as relieved because of ren!yuu trickster energy. If ren!yuu Believe what he does is right, malleus advices towards him is to not lose himself and lose his path.
Sebek would never EVER trust, he's a sly cat who is able to outsmart and rage baited him multiple times. Sebek would simply not agree towards ren!yuu ways, viewing him not possessing any honor or etiquette. He is more suspicious and on guard towards ren!yuu if he transforms, sebek would view ren!yuu like a demon–a being who will pop out towards you from the least expectant.
Silver and ren!yuu rarely have any interactions but by far their conversation is filled with formalities as well as respect towards each other. When ren!yuu uses his persona, silver would analyze the situation. Ren!yuu naturally won't cause problems... For people except crowley–ren!yuu is a pretty chill as well as hiding something, honestly he seems pretty Sane.
Even though they may not seem to interact much, lilia and ren!yuu would actually get along due to their trickster nature. Lilia actually would sometimes encourage yet also against it because it might cause some damage for the peace, both of them would find each other hilarious as well as a pleasant company to be around. After seeing ren!yuu transformation, lilia wonders if he does feel the pain of those flame or simply mad enough to take it.
ive made the joke of "haha all the pts were at the shrine at the same time joker and sumire were which implies they deliberately chose not to invite him" to my friends and written it off as a writing mistake but I really just sat with it and. oh my god. all of his friends didn't invite him.
the phantom thieves are still friends with joker in the new reality. they have the new years party. they are happy to see him. but he is now an afterthought. there is no more texting him to go to the palace or hang out or darts or anything. he has become secondary in their life because the problems he helped them work through never occurred in the first place-- and their bonds are largely built on him acting as an assistant to them. I dont doubt that there will still be phantom thief hangouts in maruki's reality and that they'll stay good friends, but joker no longer gets priority nor special attention. he's facing a degree of abandonment which, potentially, can explain some of his motivation to get the old reality back. He no longer has a use to them, and depending on how you read joker that could be a worst fear realized for him.
this makes the akechi thing even worse because he does seek joker out specifically. joker is the one person who remains a priority for him because joker is the single person he currently cares about, whether he admits it or not. it's possible to read 2/2 as a double failsafe on maruki's part, then, because it could be a way of signaling "your friends don't actually need you deep down. you are nothing but a tool to fix their problems. there is one single person who doesn't view you that way, who actually values you, and I will take him away from you if you don't comply."
I dont think the pts actually dont care for joker of course. my optimistic reading is that it's an internal logic error: ren came into their lives as a consequence of something they lost or needed, so once that thing is returned or fixed their history is wiped. this can be seen whenever joker reminds one of them, i.e. ryuji or morgana, about how they met and they become confused. it's difficult to form a deep bond with someone you don't have history with; I have friends in passing that I'm not close with and I treat them with the same general pleasantness the pts do to joker during the start of third sem. obviously if they dont remember him their feelings won't run as deeply. I think this is also supported by the fact that that when they start to have doubts, even before fully snapping out of it, they go to Leblanc to seek joker out. that single act of wanting to right a wrong or sort out a misunderstanding makes me feel as though they do have a vested interest in their friendships-- it's just unfortunate joker isn't there to see it happen.
I know that the reason joker seeks the thieves out and earns their priority during normal gameplay is because he is the player character and that is the way the video game must work, but again, akechi shows that there's still a difference there. and regardless, I think it says something interesting about joker, if you choose to read it in such a way. the abandonment is undoubtedly bad, yes, but there's more to grapple with there when joker feels the need to return the true reality not just out of a sense of justice, but a desire for control. a desire to become the center of his friends' world again, even if just subconsciously, and get their attention back. and then, when 2/2 rolls around, he must make the decision of whether or not to hand over that control of his friends for a more minuscule control of akechi-- which he now might delicately view as one of the only "real" connections he currently has after all. and if he does, the horrible irony is that on the other side, that connection will also become just as fake as the others are.
