sherlock later admitted that he was not happy to hear that john's niece was going to live with them at 221B baker street. he likes kids, he does, even if he would never admit it. but living with a child? a teenager, even? that sounded like hell. but john insisted, because this was his deceased sister's daughter, and sherlock could never say no to john watson.
as soon as he saw her, he deduced several things from her. nicotine addiction. chronic anxiety, possibly even panic attacks, by the way she kept digging her nails into her arms and fidgeting. a writer, based on the calluses on her hands. trust issues. most likely on the autistic spectrum. a pianist, too. highly defensive and uses sarcasm to hide emotions and discomfort. she was still grieving her mother, thoigh decidedly she hadn't had a good relationship with her - likely stemming from harriet's alcoholism. she was quite an observant person too, if the way she looked at everything around her like she was committing it to memory was anything to go by. authority issues. several other observations flashed through his mind, all soon overshadowed by his final observation. an observation which he uncharacteristically kept to himself, for the moment - that john's niece was not in fact his niece, but his nephew. interesting.
even though john and his niece nephew had only met once before, when theo was still young, sherlock noted many similarities between them, both physical and otherwise. john had warned sherlock not to scare her him off, but, well, sherlock wouldn't be sherlock if he didn't share at least some of his observations, would he? besides, she he had to get used to it, if she he would be living with them.
surprisingly, in an echo to a conversation he had had with john back when they first met, theo didn't tell him to "piss off". in fact, he looked impressed, even fascinated. he stared at sherlock in awe and whispered "amazing", after which he promptly blushed. sherlock couldn't help the small twitch of his lips at that. perhaps this wouldn't be so bad after all. john smuggly shot sherlock his "i told you so" look, which he ignored.
in the next few months, theo became one of his favorite people in the world, along with john. he was smart and quick witted, and when theo (uncharacteristically shy) had asked if sherlock could teach him some of his skills, sherlock found that he had said "yes" before even having to think about it. theo was a quick learner, and sherlock even grew to look forward to spending time with him. together, they conducted experiments on severed body parts (something which john did not approve of), spent time in the morgue where sherlock thaught him about the rate bruises developed on a cadaver, or played the violin while theo played the piano.
soon, theo was helping out with cases, even going to the crime scenes and chassing after criminals along with his guardians. lestrade was decidedly not content about having a teenager at the crime scenes. john worried sometimes, but couldn't really find it in himself to say no.
and so, slowly, 221B became the home of one more person, and when sherlock thought of home, he thought of the place with his two favorite people - his best friend and his kid apprentice.
theo jamie watson. 15 year old child of the recently deceased harriet watson, sent to live with his uncle and his flatmate sherlock holmes. theo is a weird kid. he prefers books over people, is obsessed with true crime stories, has a weirdly sharp memory and loves getting into fights. sometimes his mind is too loud for him, and he shuts off for days on end. his mother never understood him, and he doubts anyone ever will. that is, until he actually meets his uncle and his best friend. despite the odd group they make - a sociopathic consulting detective, an ex-military doctor addicted to danger and a sharp witted, troubled teen with a habit of attracting trouble - 221B baker street slowly starts to feel like home. being able to help solve crimes with his new guardians, being allowed to (even encouraged) to experiment with severed body parts and finding people who finally get him - who are like him - well. that's just a bonus.
