Got the second book in the rise of the penguins series!
It's like a third of the size of the first one so it might be a shorter more contained story perhaps

lol it was very wild ride and i enjoyed it a lot its not perfect but i came for penguins killing people and i got penguins killing people so its maybe like a 4/5 for me but TW for mass animal death because a lot of penguins die and also humans too ig

Bought this book bcuz I wanted to read any books with penguin characters and I have read some of the preview and it seemed fine, and unfortunately the site for it was down and idk anything about the author or this book so we'll see how it goes
general nok x leepoh new otp
im like halfway through the book so heres my thoughts plus general plot summary spoilers ig if u wanna read this peak book
basic summary is penguins secretly are very intelligent animals and when a mysterious ancient race known as 'royal emperors' shows up and unifies the penguins they begin to attack humans and eventually plan to go to war with humans.
it shifts perspectives from different characters throughout the book but mostly focuses on penguin characters which i like and we get to see the inner workings of the newly assembled 'penguin defense alliance' or PDA, organized by the Royal Emperors a highly intelligent species of penguins notable for their larger size and also some having thumbs. While initially formed for the benefit and protecting penguin kind it becomes a bit suspicious and seems more like the Royal Emperors have their own goals and their own self interests in mind above all else and will not hesitate to subjugate and use other penguin species how they see fit, with the first hint how they try to cover up the disappearance of a chinstrap penguin despite the suspicion of their fellow chinstraps, and I expect them to only become more tyrannical as the book goes on.
first notable perspective is Captain Nok a Rockhopper penguin whos entire colony has been constantly under threat by human poachers attacking, killing them and destroying and stealing their eggs. Eventually probably due to the growing influence of the PDA and Royal Emperors their colony fights back against a recent poacher visit driving them off. But with the fear of the poachers returning they ask for help from a Gentoo colony, meeting an eccentric Gentoo named Leepoh who Nok dislikes at first due to his odd and unhelpful behavior.
I like their relationship a lot they are very funny and I enjoy reading them whenever they show up. I lowkey ship them lmao because when they first meet Nok is annoyed by Leepoh however after talking with him he has an introspective moment about how lonely he is due to the trauma the humans have inflicted on him and his kind 🥺 they are literally "can't stand their fake ass" *five minutes later* "me and the bestie!!!" However I am very worried for them and I hope neither die or sacrifice themselves but also I'm worried about some betrayal of some kind not sure whats going to happen but theyre cool.
Leepoh is revealed to be in command of the gentoo colony and of course agrees to help Nok and the Rockhoppers and a large group of the two species takeover the poachers ship in a violent massacre. Killing all of the poachers on board and rescuing captured rockhoppers with one human having escaped however they are quickly found and brought up to the top of a cliff where another rockhopper leader named general Treeg attacks and kills them in revenge and reveals that the penguins can learn to speak human languages, speaking to the poacher before they fall off the cliff and die
then we have some boring human protagonists idrc about theres some guy named randy i think and another girl named gina who are a photographer and researcher respectively. They flirt annoyingly often, and everyone on the very small antarctic research team clearly knows they have a thing for each other and i dont carrreeee i came here for penguins idgaf.
Gina is written better then i expected her to be from an indie book written by a man, however her character leaves a lot to be desired and could be a lot better in another writers hands and currently feels like she is reduced to being the 'love interest' and I hope that changes because she's a smart character, but the flirtatious remarks get rather annoying especially when it seems like theres not much personality beyond that :/
Randy is not much better off, but still gets better treatment (because hes a man :/) their flirting is so annoying like i did not like their introduction bcuz thats all they did at first, he's the standard protagonist and as a wildlife photographer he came out to document and eventually publish a book about penguins. Kinda boring and would be played by Chris Pratt if they made a movie about this book
The two are having trouble finding penguins which is very odd in the antarctic but eventually the two stumble upon a large gathering of the PDA where nearly all the penguin species have sent large groups to collect at the PDA home base and Randy and Gina are ecstatic at the discovery of this seeing penguins not native to the south pole such as black footed, yellow eyed, and others together in one place. Randy wants to take more pictures but is running out of film or data or whatever in his camera so stupidly decides to split up and send Gina to back to their base to get another memory card while he stays behind to document this momentous discovery. Gina originally refuses to split because shes not fucking stupid but eventually agrees because she is stupid after all and leaves randy behind.
and then Randy fucking dies.
Jk he is discovered by the penguins who send king penguins out to capture him and he is taken inside the penguins base and is so excited to see everything and learn that the penguins have this whole society with written language and are able to communicate w each other proving them to be just as intelligent as humans. When he is taken to their leader the fearsome Royal Emperor overlord. When Overlord speaks to Randy in english Randy is so very excited (cant blame him i would be too) but the overlord is less excited and tells Randy that he hates humans (cant blame him i would too(i can blame them for SOOO many other things)) and Randy is also kinda like 'yeah you're not wrong' but does want to try to negotiate peace between humans and penguins but fails before being taken to a prison cell.
While in prison Randy meets a chinstrap with a broken wing hiding from the other penguins, especially the Royal emperors... Named Meuseaux. Who reveals to Randy that the Royal Emperors tried to feed him to some leopard seals for some unknown reason... Before going back into hiding when Nok Leepoh (hiii omg hi Leepoh hi Nok :D) show up with another chinstrap Trevot they talk but nothing much happens before they leave Randy to freeze to death. He hasn't yet but here's hoping.
Then the Royal Emperors have a big banquet with almost all the penguin species: the complete list seems to be:
Royal Emperors, Emperors, Kings, Gentoo, Adelie, Chinstrap, Rockhoppers, Magellanic, Humboldt, Blackfoot, Macaroni, Snares, Erect crested, Fiordland, royal, and yellow eyed. The only two missing are Galapagos penguins who couldnt make the journey, and Little penguins who are secretly used by the Royal Emperors to spy on the other penguins inside their base.
During this banquet they drag Randy out to parade the capture of a human and show off their accomplishments and rally the penguins together before proposing an all out war against the humans. Randy pieces this together and is deeply worried, knowing penguins don't stand a chance against humans and their weapons, and doesn't want either side to die in this war. But is dragged back to jail.
This is as far as I've gotten so far and I have to say, I'm enjoying it! It's not perfect and its got some problems but I came for penguins and I am getting penguins and its great. Fun world building and story and I'm interested to see where it goes!
THE ROYAL EMPERORS CRIMES
The Royal Emperors seem to be the books main antagonists and driving force as they are the ones that organize the penguin species together in the name of defense, however things are not as they seem and unrest grows amongst the penguin ranks. They are very secretive and commanding. And their origins are unknown, but seem to be long living or ancient species with thumbs to grasp weapons with unlike most other penguin species, along with larger size and strength they are a fun addition with more science fiction then reality but I do enjoy the idea very much.
Despite indoctrinating the other penguin species to their cause we can quickly see some cracks in their regime, First the disappearance of the chinstrap named Meuseaux who is revealed to have been attempted to be fed to some leopard seals. It's unclear why the Royal Emperors would do so but shows their willingness to sacrifice any other penguin that is not their own, and is a plot line I hope to see followed through on.
Second while all penguin species are accounted for there is no mention of Little/Fairy penguins, the smallest of the penguin species and it is eventually revealed that they work as spies for the Royal Emperors wandering through small tunnels throughout the PDA base to spy within the penguin ranks to notice any dissent amongst them. To do this they hide their existence from the other penguin species and isolate the little penguins and prevent them from learning to speak other penguin languages but their own so that they cannot communicate with other species. As little penguins are my favorite I hope they can be found and join the other penguins eventually but for now they just seem to exist to spy for the royal emperors.
Uhm, they;'re also like, sexist....
When we see Royal Emperor chicks we are told that they are separated by gender and only males can be in their army and hold positions of power while females are only allowed child rearing or teaching :/ which, it is explicitly shown that other penguin species allow all genders to fight in a previous battle so it is literally just the Royal Emperors.
This could be done for two reasons;
One(1) the author did this as a way for the Royal Emperors to look a bit more 'civilized'(?) as they do not need to have male or female fight and instead have the luxary of getting to have stay at home moms or whatever that other penguin species can not afford or do not have. Which personally sucks as penguins do not have obvious gender dimorphism and the male and female have equal role in childcare for the survival of their species and I hope it is not option one which would show some unfortunate biases in the author.
Option Two(2) is it is done because the Royal Emperors fucking suck!!!!!!!!!!!! they are a tyrants who instill a patriarchal system amongst their own kind to give power to a select few and indoctrinate their young into this system while allowing other species to do their dirty work so they can sit around all day twiddling their little penguin thumbs that they have for some reason!!!
and I personally hope it's option two, and while I obviously don't condone sexism I gotta admit, it's pretty fucking funny. These guys suck so bad they wanna pretend theyre the smartest penguin species and yet theyre so misogynistic booooo!!!!! they suck! Let woman into your army you fucking cowards!!!! I hope this goes addressed in the future and we can see reform amongst their ranks or revolution i wanna see the penguin feminist revolution please please please plea
Finished the book.... rahghjjhhh it was great but the next book doesn't come until Friday!!
