The difference between the openings of Jane Austen novels are so funny. Specifically, the difference between Pride & Prejudice and Emma (because these are the ones that i have read).
Pride and Prejudice opens with the iconic:
"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife"
Beautiful, poetic and sets the scene for the entire book wonderfully.
Emma opens with:
"Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence"
Straight to the point, bold and you already know this is going to be a very intersting character. She's pretty, she's smart, she's got more money than you could ever need, she's the best person in existence. Its like how in Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen says that the character of Jane is like the most beautiful and perfect of the Bennett sisters.
I haven't finished Emma yet but this contrast is so funny to me
