Pfizer Inc. today announced that a wholly-owned Polish subsidiary of Pfizer has acquired the rights to Polocard, a low-dose aspirin (acidum acetylsalicylicum), and the leading over-the-counter (OTC) brand for heart attack prevention in Poland, from ZF Polpharma SA.

Pharmaceutical firm MSD has announced plans to close its plant in Swords in North Co Dublin by the end of 2017, which would result in the loss of 570 jobs. The company said today that no job losses would occur before the middle of next year at the earliest, but said it plans to lay off about 130 people in the second half of 2014. The rest of the jobs at Swords will be phased out over the next three years.

Bayer AG has offered to pay $2.4-billion (U.S.) for Norway’s Algeta, its partner for a new prostrate cancer treatment, at a 27-per-cent premium to the stock’s last close, Algeta said on Tuesday. The deal would boost Bayer’s drugs division by giving it outright control over Xofigo, a drug the two have developed jointly since 2009 and started selling in the United States this year.

Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISIS) announced today that it has initiated a Phase 1 study for ISIS-GSK3Rx and earned a $3 million milestone payment from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). ISIS-GSK3Rx is designed to inhibit the production of an undisclosed target to treat a common viral infection. Isis will develop ISIS-GSK3Rx to Phase 2 proof-of-concept, after which GSK has an exclusive option to in-license the program and further develop and commercialize the asset.
