@thephoenixeyes
very impressive they all saw a big firework and were immediately ready, but I am imagining this scene playing out all over the capital:
Only on episode three, and this guy has already been introduced at least four times. I guess the show really wants the audience to know his name and title 😹
Fangs of Fortune
ASHES TO CROWN (2026)
Ep 3: The male lead has almost been beaten to death in TWO flashbacks
I think they might just like splashing blood on him...
couple of early entries for the Ironic Signs list:
.........I don't think things are going to be virtuous OR peaceful based on that first episode (yay!!)
The thing about hostages is that you can stab through them and then the bad guy is right there on the other side
Turns out she was a plant, but that was fun anyway
This man has just committed so much murder.
I am in love.
You know what? Cdramas 100% get it. They understand that the only way a man is attractive is when he's bloody and bruised, and preferably holding a sword.
Exhibit A:
Girl, me too...
Exhibit B:
Please, he's so fine!! 🥵🔥
Ashes to Crown (previously: Qiao Chu) 翘楚 from 👖 Youku. 📣🗓️ Airing on June 2, 2026 at 12:00 pm. Starring Chen Duling and Zhou Yiran. New trailer.
Ashes to Crown 《翘楚》 - First Trailer (eng subbed)
Once again losing my mind over the writing of Fangs of Fortune as a tragedy. How many times do they show us the ending? It's the first thing they do, when Zhao Yuanzhou shows up at the Demon Hunting Bureau and plunges the Cloud Light Sword into his own chest. Even as the characters change and the circumstances change, they keep showing it to us, again and again, the same image of Zhuo Yichen's sword plunging into Zhao Yuanzhou's body, the constant reminder that this is the end, the only end possible. And yet even with all those reminders it still feels like a shock when it finally comes. The story trained us too well. We saw the image so many times, got used to the fact that it was just that. Nothing but an image. How many times did Zhao Yuanzhou survive being stabbed? How many times have they played out the ending in front of everybody? Why should this time be real? The silence tells us it's real. The loneliness tells us it's real. At the end of the line it's just the two of them and the Cloud Light Sword, masks down and no pretenses. It still doesn't feel real. Not until Zhao Yuanzhou's body hits the ground.
writing little verses and big legends [part 2]
Website idea: Writers of all nationalities give each other advice on how to name OCs from their native culture/language.
For example, a native English speaker can tell you that "Henry Edward" is kinda weird and evokes Tudor kings, and a native Chinese speaker can tell you that, I don't know, "mīmī" sounds cute but means titties.
Re: Chinese names, there is something cool people should know about, (maybe you already know):
Using this database, you can access the names and biographical information of real people across Chinese historical periods and dynasties. You can go on here and find the names (not just given names but courtesy names and other sorts of honorary aliases, depending on the period) of thousands of real individuals, though it's almost entirely men in the older dynasties. Very few women.
Need a character name for your Tang Dynasty official? Check out the CBDB and find a *literal Tang Dynasty official* to grab a name from!
Thing with slang terms is that it's extremely localised and/or only works in one dialect but not another... Mimi is only slang for tiddies in mandarin speaking (and very likely online/younger) communities.
Meanwhile it is a pretty common name in Cantonese, case in point actress Chu Mimi 朱咪咪 (wiki) If you google the words 咪咪 the top results are in fact all brands/songs/social media of people with that name. I highly doubt any of those are trying to invoke boob related imageries or are even aware of the alternative reading.
I would say not to worry too much about possible unfortunate connotations. Dick is still a common, if slightly dated English name despite the implications no? Probably still good to know as trivia or used as a joke if the situation calls for it, but really, don't worry too much!!!
Getting a native speaker to vet the name so it sounds probable is a good idea generally, just that the background of the person would factor as much, especially when dialects are involved! Cuz Mandarin is like, a very recent thing and many many chinese people dont actually use mandarin spellings/sounds for their names.
The most common Chinese surname, 陈 can be Chen (Mandarin) Tan (Hokkien) Chan (Cantonese) Chin, Chang, Tang etc. Point is, even if the name sounds weird to one chinese person it may not be the same case to another! Just fun FYI things

(well, most of these)
.... someone free this man.
a poster that does not show how gonzo the trailer is.

Pretty!
It is objectively pretty, but I continue to not get why this drama spent the money casting WHD and MZY and then proceeds to try to make them look like anyone but WHD and MZY.
I do like this. Although ... apparently the screenwriter did Fight For Love so ...
I remain unsure about Cheng Lei's wig in this drama. I feel like it's too low?
NGL outside of Gui Luan (the Road to Glory), this drama is my other I WANT next year.
This does look Prestige (TM) and lovely, although it's a one-way corrollation between prestige and communism when it comes to republic era drama.
...Dancing with the Tide? like Dancing with the Wolves?
(it is a pretty poster)
He's a rebel (and we know this from the platinum blond hair)
Tencent did you even try.
and then drumroll, a video...
If Lament of Autumn is going for prestige, this is going for the opposite of that. And listen ...
I have watched the Cage of Love multiple times. In fact, I'm annoyed that it's been taken off Youtube because it is a fun comfort watch.
