sometimes social interaction, as irrelevant or short as it may be will feel impossible. sometimes leaving the house will be scary and panic inducing because your anxiety makes you see danger everywhere. to all of my anxious peeps out there, i know how hard you are trying, how exhausting it is to struggle so much with people and life itself, to feel embarrassed and ashamed and awkward. i’m really proud of you for making that phone call, asking that question in class or leaving your home for a walk. i love you.
I survived the exam!! Thank you all for your well wishes <33 I think it went quite well, but won’t know the results until tomorrow.
I have an oral exam tomorrow in medical applications of nuclear physics and I'm ✨ so nervous ✨
About a month ago I was presenting at the annual conference of the Dutch Physical Society Fysica 2021. Now, I got the June issue of their magazine, in which they look back at the highlights of the conference. I was in a good company indeed!
In the Young’s Speakers Contest I ended up closely second with 34% of the votes from the 700 people listening to the story of my research. (The winner got 38%.)
Although I did not win the contest, I was presenting at the same stage with two Nobel Prize winners in Physics and got a brilliant response from the audience. This meeting will for sure stay in my memory and the magazine page goes directly on a display in my home office. I am immensly proud of myself and take this achievement as a great motivation to keep doing what I love — high quality research.
Recording of the whole virtual meeting via the link below. If you are curious about my work, jump to the presentation at 01.37.19 – Adela Melcrova: ‘No pores: The unexpected physics of a new antibiotic’. https://www.fysica.nl/
Oh wow! Congratulations!!

Hot tip for oral exams: Always keep some good examples up your sleeve!
the impulse to hide what I'm doing at my computer still sits so deep even tho I'm literally never looking at anything objectionable , the door will open and I'll hurry to close the page like oh fuck no one can know I'm looking at the Wikipedia page for the Balkans

“write drunk, edit sober” is the only thing getting me through my final lab report of the semester
My entire degree summed up in one meme
Dose planning!
If there’s one college assignment I had to do which I could force on all college students, it’d be this paper I had to write for a Research Methods class. It was later in the semester, and the professor gave us a very straightforward assignment: you need to find a news article which reports on the results of an academic study, read the actual study, and then explain in detail why the article did not properly represent the study’s findings.
Not only was having to do that a really useful exercise in terms of figuring out how misinformation gets passed around, but talking with a class of 25 other students who all had to do the same thing for 25 different articles makes you realize that the majority of all “studies show…” news articles misrepresent the studies they’re based on
bonus round, somewhat related:
i had a cs systems professor who taught a graduate class
where they had all the students try to replicate a paper in their field
that’s it. just one lil paper
and… whew boy… the number of papers that just straight up did not replicate… the number of papers where people had made some stupid programming error and thus unintentionally misrepresented their results… the number of papers where there were no factual inaccuracies, but like, once you worked through it & the graphs, it became real obvious that data was being presented misleadingly, trying to sweep the rug over obvious drawbacks to their methodology, etc
like “trendier” subfields were more prone to this kind of bullshit but. afaict no discipline came out unscathed. good times
STRONGLY ENDORSED
Summarize, summarize, summarize....
I finished my computer vision pipeline! Did it go great? Nope! Did it go bad? Also nope! It was entirely mediocre! Sent a recording of my presentation to my professor today so now I only have a paper left to write on it which will hopefully be easy. Also I got an accuracy of 86% which is cool so excuse me while I apply to machine learning jobs ASAP.
On another note, I completely cranked out a 5 page paper on Dvorak so if anyone wants to talk about classical music hit me up. Enjoy my beautiful budding strawberry plant and have a good finals week everyone.
This post makes me want to get up and get stuff done!
