I love all of this
My country
I legit cant believe I have to say this but. Here it goes.
Given it's the 4th I feel I should clarify in case you were wondering how I felt in terms of patriotism. Nigga, I am a descendant of slaves. You know what that means?
The idea of celebrating Independence as a nation while holding human beings in bondage is the very paragon of both irony and hipocrisy. For these reasons and their privilege and their gross miseducation, white folks are either fools or privileged enough to acknowledge the atrocity that is this nations inception, but suspend it long and well enough to find some pride in being American. Me? I'm not only acutely aware of the atrocity of its inception, but am also persistently confronted with the legacy that makes America the present day atrocity it is. So then, I can't as easily suspend my beliefs. I'd have to flat out ignore the truth.
"But Keef, folks at the border would love to be in your position, you should feel privileged to be a citizen"
My being here and their not, even the conditions that make them want to leave aren't the result of time and chance, the stars aligning or the ordinance of God, it's the result of white men's plunder. I show my God gratitude for air in my lungs, not for the byproduct of the horror of America.
I love Black America but only because "Western Hemispheric part of the African Diaspora" is a clunky term. I love what we've done, what we've built and how we've resisted but my ancestors would be ashamed if I posited it as part of the fabric of America...as though it's a fraternity and these atrocities are some hazing ritual or dues owed to claim the title.
Genocide, slavery and subjugation aren't stains on the American fabric. That would make it an inperfect place that is otherwise great. No, these are the foundation and lifeblood of this place, it is its reputation in the world community. I refuse take pride in or align myself that if for no other reason than having to answer for worldwide atrocities they have inflicted. Much less for the horror on myself and my people.
The ideals propogated as what it means to be American are a farce, it's lip service and revisionist history. The redeeming qualities are limited to the greatness of Blackness and it that's where my pride and allegiance lies; the affront to America that is Blackness. Not them lame ass stars and bars.
