When did you know you were going to become and English teacher..?

I only knew for sure once I got my first job. But if you mean when did I know I wanted to be one? I’d say it was some time between graduating high school and graduating college. I’ve always loved literature, and this language of ours, and no one ever taught it the way I thought it should be imparted.

Let me reassure you, you're young, and you have so much time to decide what you want to do with your life, IF you even decide to stick to one thing.
I don't know if I'll be a teacher for the rest of my life. I know it doesn't seem this way to you gentlemen, but I'm still young and I have a lot of life ahead of me. Teaching is what feels right for now. Maybe later, something else will call to me.
Your decisions as a 17 year old are not going to define the rest of your life, no matter what your parents or the other staff at Welton might say. You have time, Mr Cameron, trust me on that.

That's okay Mr Cameron. This poem, as with much of Uncle Walt's work, is about the enjoyment of life, and finding happiness in the small things. And the focus of this poem in particular is about vocation.
Each person in the poem revels in their work, even the mothers, wives and girls doing the domestic labour that was expected of them at this time. They're singing songs of the enjoyment of their labour.
It's not about what they're doing, or what the job actually is. It's about the fact that they've all individually found something that feels right to them.
And it doesn't matter if it's something your parents would approve of. It's your life, Mr Cameron.
