Ruby blinked when she saw the woman scramble out of site. The gardener must of recognized her. She held her breath as she was dragged out of the room into the music room. Trying to distract herself would be the best option. “The instruments all seem very ni-” She heard the door slam. The woman was inside. Watching Sapphire excuse herself she nearly panicked. She crept closely to the door and put her ear to it. Probably not the best thing to do, or the mostly polite. But she needed to hear what was going down on the other side. She heard the woman say many things about her, but by far what had hurt the worst was how lowly she talked about her being a homosexual. She bit her bottom lip, listening to Sapphire try and defend her. She felt a spark of rage in her gut when she heard the woman start to rag on Sapphire and assuming. She was ready to burst through the door and yell at the other woman when Sapphire had demanded she get out of her house. She gulped. She had never heard her voice get that stern and loud. She thought about staying put, until she heard sniffling and crying. She couldn’t. She burst through the door and hurried over to Sapphire. “S-Sapphire i’m sorry this, this is all my fault I shouldn’t have come here I-” She pulled the girl close to her, embracing her in a comforting hug. She rubbed her back gently. Feeling pretty terrible for causing this sort of thing to go down. She pulled away from her and looked at her face. “Please don’t cry…” She gently ran her thumb under her eyes, wiping away the tears.
A frightened, almost choked gasp rose from her throat at the sudden sound of Ruby’s voice in the room, teary eyes momentarily wide in alarm as a pair of strong arms gently pulled her into a gentle embrace.
Instead of feeling comforted by her presence like she should have been, she felt utterly humiliated crying in front of her like this. But she had already seen and heard everything, so what was the point in trying to hide it?
“ Ruby - “
Sapphire managed to choke out before she broke down in sobs, struggling to pull herself together. Both her hands shielded her face from view as she wept against Ruby’s chest, held comfortingly still by the two arms that guarded her.
As time passed, her tears eventually begun to quell, tensions and worries appeased by the hand that’d rubbed calming motions against her back.
Sniffling, she gave a shaky exhale as they slowly parted from each other, her somber blue eyes briefly meeting with Ruby’s. But her whole demeanor seemed to change, even for a short moment, as a part of her was overcome with immense contentment and adoration at the delicate touch of Ruby’s large hand cupping her face to wipe away her tears; and as she did, a very faint, but definite appreciative smile crossed her lips in response to her touch. But faded as quick as it came.
Shoulders fell as she averted her gaze towards the ground, finding it difficult to maintain eye contact after just crying her eyes out seconds ago.
“ ...This wasn’t your fault. “
She despondently whispered, leaning her head closer into the warmth of Ruby’s hand that was still tenderly holding the side of her face.
“ I knew the risks I was taking by doing this and I did it anyway. And look what happened - but do you know what? “
She rose a hand to rest her palm up against hers, eyelids fluttering shut as she turned her head even more and pressed her lips to the inside of Ruby’s palm, quietly muttering her next chosen words into her hand.
“ You were well worth the risk to me. “

Ruby stayed quiet throughout the journey from the lounge to the house. It was a nice silence. Peaceful, especially after the hectic hustle and bustle back at the lounge. She turned her head to look forward when she heard Sapphire say they had reached their destination. It took around 30 minutes. Her jaw dropped slightly. Surely this was a joke? This place..looked like some sort of five star hotel! She got out of the vehicle once it was parked and closed the door. Her eyes twinkling at the sheer size of this home. She followed Sapphire inside, looking around at the white interior. Everything seemed so clean and fancy. In the back of her mind she thought it suited Sapphire. It did fit her high class status and her personality. She bit her bottom lip and turned to Sapphire with a smile on her face. “It’s amazing. It’s hard to believe you actually live here!” She paused and continued gawking at everything. Remembering all the different places and rooms that Sapphire had listed. She chuckled some. “I’m a little afraid to touch anything.”
A gentle huff of laughter rose from Sapphire, her head shaking in response to her comment.
“ Don’t be. Come; let me show you around. “
She offered in poor-concealed excitement, reaching down to grasp Ruby’s hand to gently tug her along without really giving her much time to react.
" Over here is the kitchen, which in all honestly, I don’t use much. Down that hall is the ladies room and bedroom - and over here, if you pull these two curtains back - ”
She paused, letting her hand fall from Ruby’s hand to reach up to grasp the translucent white curtains shielding the particular entrance, swiftly drawing them apart to reveal the entire glass-built structure of the room.
“ - Is the glass room. Pretty self-explanatory. Although, It looks much better during the day. “
She commented with a light-hearted smile, but ended up short lived at the voluntary turn of her head causing unintentional direct eye contact with her housekeeper, a woman with prim blonde hair trimming the hedges outside in the evening, sunset-lit garden.
Through the glass wall, the two women shared a moment of mutual dread, and Sapphire knew right away that she had just been caught red-handed with Ruby - the very woman she was told to stay far away from. Right as soon as she saw the woman drop her garden tools and rush around the estate in the direction of the front door, the singer hastily tugged ruby out of the room, her shoulders slightly more tense then they had been just moments ago.
“ Let me show you the music room, “

Ruby crossed her arms and shook her head. She was tired of guys thinking that women couldn’t take care of themselves properly. She glanced back up at Sapphire, noticing the keys in her hand. She figured she must have a really fancy car. “Well i’m glad your independent.” Smiling she continued to listen to her. Act as her guard of sorts? She could do that. Easily. She could also easily avoid detection. Giving a wave of her hand. She didn’t seem to worried about the prospect of getting caught “Don’t worry Sapphire. I can easily escort you home. As well as keep everything on the down low.”
In all truthfulness, the commute through the city alongside Ruby hadn’t been as bad as she thought it would be. Instead, it had been spent in a remarkably comfortable silence, an absolute tranquil change of pace from her stressful daily grind. Having the good fortune to be able to spend this beautiful summer evening alongside the object of her affection felt so surreal, that she was tempted to start pinching herself. She didn’t, though. She wasn’t about to make herself look like an absolute fool in front of Ruby. But it did take some time to convince herself that this really wasn’t a dream. This was real. Very real.
Despite how it felt like it had only taken a matter of minutes to arrive, the drive itself had come close to taking no longer than a half hour until she finally reached the lengthy brick road that would navigate her straight to the estate.
At first glance, anyone would be fair to assume the building was definitely a grand hotel. Considering its rather extensive size, she understood how easily it could be mistaken as one. But this building was her home. Nothing more, nothing less.

Ruby allowed the woman to gently wipe away what remained of the tears that adorned her face. She smiled at her in return. She all but jumped out of her skin when she heard the door knock. She remained silent, looking at Sapphire, noticing the shock in the womans face matched her own. She remained silent and watched as Sapphire conversed with the man behind the door. Who was this man? She had no idea. But she did know she should stay quiet. As she listened to Sapphire tell him a blatant lie and see him off. She almost said something, but quickly shut herself up once Sapphire put that finger to her lips. Once the coast was clear she let out a sigh of relief. That was close, perhaps too close. She fidgeted with her tie. Part of her knew that they would need to part ways for the night soon. But the sentence that came from her lips nearly knocked her off her feet. Come back to her home? She felt a blush cross her cheeks. “I have no plans. I would love to keep you company. But are you sure it’s not too much trouble?” She smiled. She was excited. Spending more time with Sapphire seemed too good to be true. She had honestly felt like this would be a one time thing. Or maybe just a quick conversation every now and then.
“ Don’t be silly, of course not. “
She waved a hand in affirmation, currently leaning over the vanity surface to touch up her makeup in the illuminated mirror.
“ I haven’t had much company visit in quite a while. But, then again, I’m hardly home at all to be honest. “
She paused, briefly rolling her lips together to even out her freshly-applied lipstick. Straightening her posture, she walked away a moment to grab a matching white shawl from the clothing rack, shrugging the fabric over her head and tossing over her shoulder; and just for outdoor reassurance, she reached for a pair of round-sculpted sunglasses from the tabletop and slipped the specs up and over her eyes, concealing her identity to appear like any other typical woman on the streets. She was absolutely in no mood to deal with the people who might recognize her and start tossing rumors around, like why she was for some reason, consorting with a member of the mafia. She would never hear the end of it.
“ That man at the door, by the way, was my manager. Robert is a very... strange man. He thinks it’s an outright crime for me to go out anywhere without an escort, because “a lady as pretty as yourself must be protected by a strong, capable man, dear”. “
She mimicked in his constantly articulated voice with a quiet scoff, busying herself by quickly rummaging through a drawer.
“ He thinks I can’t function without a man following me and telling me what to do. “
Her features twisted into an apparent look of disgust, evident in the tone of her voice as well. But it was short-lived, as a somewhat mischievous look started playing across her face.
“ And I may have also lied a little when I told him I had already called a car service, “ She extended an arm and rose her hand up to face level, revealing a pair of car keys dangling between her fingers.
“ But I didn’t lie completely about having an escort. I trust you’re quite capable of protecting me. Considering you already have. “
A small smile arose as she clasped the metal object tightly in one hand, stepping over to Ruby and reaching out to tenderly take hold of her hand, guiding her to follow close behind.
“ We’re leaving through the rear. Try not to let anyone see you, alright? “

Ruby pulled away after what felt like hours, which in reality was only a few minutes. She looked at her and gave a soft smile, rubbing the tears from her eyes. It was oddly comforting hearing these words coming from Sapphire. “I won’t. I promise you that. I can’t thank you enough for actually listening to my story and seeing more for who I am and now what i’ve done.” She blushed some and rubbed her neck. She did feel bad showing her weak side. But she did suppose it proved that she was human. Also she was a little embarrassed too, having got tears on Sapphire. “Sorry for crying on you. I don’t know what came over me.” She gave a light hearted chuckle.
Spending those several peaceful minutes in each others arms had brought upon the greatest feeling Sapphire hadn’t felt in such a long time. There in that moment, she felt safe - protected, even - despite the circumstance. It was a feeling she never wanted to end. But everything does, eventually.
When they parted, her expression had softened at the sight of Ruby’s smile, watching as she harshly wiped the tears from her face. Years of being taught proper social etiquette was likely the result of her stepping away for a moment, making her way back to the vanity and pulling a single drawer open. Already knowing what she came for, she quickly grabbed hold of her white silken handkerchief and shut the drawer with her hip, returning to her side as she responded with her habitual kindness, like always.
“ Oh, It’s fine. We all have our moments. “
A gentle laugh rose from her lips to match her rather adorable chuckle, fingers moving with grace as she gently wiped away the last visible traces of Ruby’s tears. Even after breaking down just less than a minute ago, she was still such a sight so behold.
But the moment had entirely been ruined the instant she heard muffled footsteps steadily making their way up to her door, and she instinctively froze up, her breath catching in her throat. Several knocks resounded against the wooden door, causing her heart to nearly stop. Oh shit.

Ruby watched as the woman was once again, deep in thought. She was wondering what was going through her mind. Disgust? How to send her to jail fast enough? Fear? She perked up once she heard her voice. She shivered some, anticipating the worse. That was until she felt those soft hands on her cheeks. She opened her eyes and looked at her. She…She wasn’t going to turn her in? She understood her? Her bottom lip quivered. She didn’t want Sapphire to see her like this but she couldn’t stop it. She was crying. She nodded, as confirmation that she would be careful, as she didn’t trust her voice enough to speak right now. She seemingly lost control and hugged the woman before her gently. She didn’t know what came over her. But she managed to whisper out something. “Thankyou.”
At first she hesitated, her fingers almost drawing away the second she felt warm tears touch her skin, but she ended up staying put. Did she say something wrong? She was frozen in the moment of initial shock, caught in disbelief as she watched Ruby break down in front of her. She didn’t know what to say to console her - to stop those tears from falling. Something like this never happened to her before.
She opened her mouth to reassure her, but came to a halt the second she felt arms pull her into a sudden embrace. She couldn’t believe this was happening.
Perhaps, it was for the best that she simply hush up and let it happen. Besides, it wasn’t as if she had the intention to tell her to get off. She wouldn’t dare.
Sapphire welcomed her with open arms, holding her close without resistance and carefully coursing her fingers through her curled hair. Goodness, she couldn’t get over how soft it was, but she had to remind herself, the woman in her arms was crying. This wasn’t the time to daydream. Just as she parted her lips to say something, the other had beat her to it. But despite her words unintentionally muffled into the fabric of her dress, she still heard the small ‘thank you’.
A warmhearted smile crossed her lips, grateful for the fact she hadn’t said something wrong, she said something right. Bringing both her hands together, her fingers loosely entwined and hung delicately behind Ruby’s neck as she comfortingly rested her head atop her shoulder, deciding to take up this momentary bit of silence to console her.
“ You’re not as awful as people say you are. “
She begun, whispering closely to her ear whilst her thumb drew small circles above her neck.
“ Those horrible rumors about you are all nonsense. But, you. You need to know... Having to do these things for money to survive doesn’t make you an unforgivable human being. The others may like to argue differently about it, but they don’t matter. What matters is that, to me, you’re still a good person, Ruby. Don’t let them ruin you. “

Ruby simply nodded. She even turned her back to give the woman before her as much privacy as she possible could while being in the same room as someone who was changing clothes. She felt nervous. Not because of the changing, but of the silence that came over both of them. It was obvious the woman was in very deep thought.
Will you be honest with her? The question settled into her mind. You turned to her, and fidgeted with your tie. Gulping slightly. You figured this question would pop up. It was no surprise. She asked you about your affiliation with the mafia. Now it was time to figure out if you would go so low as to lie to the woman.
Biting your bottom lip, you sighed in defeat. There was no reason to hide it from her.
“Yes. That is me. But if I may explain my motives behind such heinous endeavors. I will. Times are hard. They don’t pay enough, especially not to women. Surviving on a minimum wage in these times is nearly impossible. I’m disgusted with some of the things i’ve done, truly. I have no idea what rumors you have heard. But I have heard the ones about me killing people. I can assure you, I have not taken anyones life. I would sooner starve that stoop that low.”
She was prepared to go to jail at this point. She did deserve it. All those crimes. All the stress it’s caused in the last year. It’s the reason she came to the lounge. She was trying to get her mind off everything with alchohol.
“ I see, “
Sapphire responded in a noticeably softer tone, her hands resting flat atop the vanity surface in what seemed as if she were again, deep in thought about this whole situation.
She hadn’t anticipated such a thorough explanation to come from the woman in all honesty, and the singer was, for the time being, speechless. Sapphire was a woman who had money and power in this industry - a woman able to have someone arrested and thrown in prison at the snap of a finger. Yet, Ruby still trusted her enough to confide this knowledge to her. She couldn’t just turn around and betray her trust like that. She already cared about her too much.
Sapphire refused to act the way the others in upper-class society would behave. She refused to conform to their close-minded, irrational ways. Because how could anyone be so cruel as to punish someone who’s only intention was to survive in this horrific world?
Lifting her gaze to glance at Ruby from the mirror’s reflection, it was an effortless task to deduce that the woman was struggling to keep her calm, a look of inner turmoil drawn across her features. She understood how difficult it must have been for her to confess something this serious; and after all that, she could only wish for nothing more than to take this wonderful woman under her wing and offer her everything she’s ever desired and more, but here where upper and lower class were constantly at each others throats, it just wasn’t that easy. She sighed.
Sapphire still couldn’t help but feel absolute pity for the woman.
Parting from the vanity to approach the woman in distress, she guided a few fingers under her chin to get her attention, and with a delicate touch, she reached out to tenderly slip her hands over both of her cheeks in an attempt to ease her down from this awful shame she was likely feeling.
“ If you’re worried I’m going to inform the authorities about this, you’re greatly mistaken. I understand you’re only doing this to survive, Ruby. I can see how guilty you’re feeling about this by just looking at you. I won’t tell anyone about this as long as you promise me one thing, “
Her fingers briefly brushed over a few strands of her curls, her effeminate blue eyes brimming with sympathy and concern.
“ Promise me you’ll be careful around them. I’ve heard the news of far too many deaths in this city, please don’t let me see your name become the next. “
