Lord, may I face with peace of mind all that the coming day will bring me. Grant me to fully surrender to Your holy will at every hour of today, guide and support me in everything, reveal Your will to me and those around me.
Teach me, O Lord, to act directly and intelligently with every name in my society and family (in the monastery of the brotherhood), without embarrassing or upsetting anyone, but comforting, helping and pleasing everyone.
Whatever news I receive during the day, teach me to accept it with a calm soul and the firm conviction that all is Your holy will.
Guide my thoughts and feelings in all my actions and words, and in all unforeseen cases, do not let me forget that everything was sent by You.
Lord, give me the strength to endure the fatigue of the coming day and all the events during that day.
Guide my will and teach me to pray to You, Lord, to believe, to hope, to endure, to forgive and to love.
Amen.

Refectory in a Greek Monastery (Mount Athos), painted by Theodoros Rallis c. 1885, oil on canvas. The most authentic and striking detail of this beautiful painting depicting mealtime in an Orthodox monastery is the sight of a monk standing before a lectern and reading aloud. This is a real and essential practice in Orthodox monasteries to this day, where most of the monks will eat in silence and listen intently while one of their brothers reads scripture or hagiographies from a lectern. We can also see a solitary monk on the right, sitting at his own table and facing the others; he may be contemplating or he may be a respected Elder (Geronda/Γέροντας) ensuring the other monks do not forget their spiritual discipline and lapse into idle chatter.
