Album: Clocks and Clouds Artist: Gyorgy Ligeti - San Francisco Symphony Conductor : Esa-Pekka Salonen Choir : San Fransisco Symphony Choir Genre: #Classical ℹ️About The Album : While residing in the Bay Area in the early 1970s, Ligeti came across with the music of Terry Riley and Steve Reich, and was intrigued by the similarities between their seminal minimalist scores and his own micropholyphonic writing. These findings were channeled into a compositional process resulting in Clocks and Clouds.  As suggested by its title, there are two kinds of musical processes at play. First, there are superimposed, phased-out, pulsating patterns, somewhat akin to those of Reich and Riley, and then then there are gorgeous, static, cloud-like formations of harmony and timbre. These processes trade through myriad of vocal and instrumental combinations, giving rise to an ever-transforming, gradually shape-shifting sonic firmament. Vocal and instrumental lines are joined in Clocks and Clouds (1972-73), one of Ligeti’s absolute masterpieces, scored for twelve-part female choir and an orchestra of triple, quadruple and quintuple winds, two trumpets, metallic percussion, two harps and lower strings.  💭Thoughts : It invokes a feeling of fog settling over a lake that spans the whole aperture of our vision, vastness slowly being draped in a thick curtain of a white out. It was recorded in a single eight-hour session on April 7, 1959, and was certified Gold by the RIAA in 1965 and Platinum in 1986. 💭Thoughts : The album is smooth and anecdotal, it brings up the image of a worn out gunslinger that survived to tell the tales over a sunrise across the desert landscape. Set in a time incomprehensible to my urban imagination, only partially stretched by the western movies I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. 🍸Goes Best With : Today, we’re going to make ourselves a Tequila Sunrise. Tequila Sunrise is a classic cocktail that evokes a summer sunrise in a glass. It is made with three basic ingredients: tequila, orange juice, and grenadine syrup. The cocktail was invented around 1930 with a base of tequila and lime juice, soda water, and crème de cassis, but the modern version originated in the 1970s in Sausalito, California, when the cocktail gained a huge leap in popularity because Mick Jagger named the Rolling Stones' tour after it. A traditional way to serve Tequila Sunrise is on the rocks, unmixed, in a tall collins glass, but when presented in a highball glass, the color of its combined ingredients (with grenadine poured slowly through the glass) resembles a sunrise even better. Album: My Favourite Faded Fantasy Artist: Damien Rice Genre: #Folk ℹ️About The Album : My Favourite Faded Fantasy is the third studio album by Irish singer, songwriter and producer Damien Rice. Jessica Goodman and Ryan Kistobak of The Huffington Post included the album on their list of 2014's best releases, declaring the album "a devastating reminder that love leaves you crumbling and fantasies are just fiction". 💭Thoughts : I just wanted to go to bed tonight and give this hobby a break, but habits have a force field around them, so here I am. Writing about an album that has been around for a while (on my six month cycling playlist), skipping between the people that held my gaze too long, yet not long enough. February was a tough one, with the momentum of existence peaking incongruently based off a fantasy so ardently pursued that I feel sillier than usual, damned at my musing. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! But one in particular stands out. To get your hands on a bottle of the brewery’s Dark Lord, you’ll have to attend the annual Dark Lord Day and endure hours of heavy metal and beer drinking. Puente didn't dilute his sound for Dance Mania -- unlike the many commercial crossover LPs that were released by both established groups and ad hoc studio collectives -- but his hard mambos here were performed at tempos that encouraged dancing by more staid LP-buyers, slightly slower than the high paces of his Tico sides or Palladium shows. Brassy and swinging, yes, and certainly as precise as a great Latin band could get, but not as torrid as Spanish Harlem dancers would be accustomed to. Most were Puente originals, spanning mambo and cha-cha and guaguanco, and Dance Mania built the foundation for great Latin LPs to come. It has its roots from Puerto Rico although this has been largely contested. Every 10th of July, Puerto Ricans hold the Pina Colada day nationwide. Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend till smooth and pour in a glass of your choice and garnish with a pineapple wedge. Album: Ugly Season Artist: Perfume Genius Genre: #ChamberPop #BaroquePop #Industrial ℹ️About The Album : Mike Hadreas' music as Perfume Genius has always walked an interesting line between experimentalism and accessibility-pop for listeners more interested in "pop" as a concept than a reality. Written as a companion to a dance piece by choreographer Kate Wallich, Ugly Season effectively inverts the balance, situating Hadreas' hallmarks- his romanticism, his expressivity, his startling, sometimes violent sense of drama-in the context of something that plays more like a symphony or soundtrack than a set of discrete songs. The title is a feint, of course: This is extremely beautiful music even in its dissonance, from the Philip Glass-like grid of "Teeth" and the spiderweb instrumental of "Scherzo" to the industrial roar of "Hellbent". And just in case, he gives you something called"Pop Song" -which isn't one, of course. For all the times he changed his getup--the glam alien of Ziggy, the moody existentialist of the late '70s, the pop sophisticate of the '80s and so on-he was, in his way, remarkably consistent, a barometer of where the culture was and a glimpse of where it was going. Gender fluidity, the hybridization of rock and electronic music, the transformative power of the internet: Bowie was never there first per se, but he was always there early, a transformative figure who managed to bring challenging ideas into mainstream culture in a way that felt stylish, digestible, exciting and most of all possible. His final two albums, 2013's The Next Day and 2016's Blackstar (released two days before his death), were among the grandest-and starkest-of his career. His final video, for the song "No Plan", was released posthumously on what would have been his 70th birthday. Bowie doesn't appear in the clip, at least not live.
