If she's learned anything

in this life

it's that this world is full

of monsters

the kind who take

with greedy hands

inflict wounds

with venomous tongues

and use someones love

as way to dim the light in their eyes

without so much as a sorry

or care

she knows there's true hearts

out there

yet for a rare heart like hers

not of this time or place

it's so hard to discern

angels from monsters

and the saddest part is

after witnessing so much hell

she still believes her heart

can sway another

to abandon their darkness

for the ethereal beauty of flight
