Happy Hump Day! Brrrrr! It is a bit chilly here in Florida. Don't worry, I don't provide heat for my adult birds. They got plenty of feather insulation to stay warm. Being winter creates less hours of daylight in the day and less production in result of it. We add additional lights during this time of year to help with production. A chicken generally needs 16-18 hours of light to continue production. Setting a timer will help. Outdoor christmas light timers is what we use. If you want to give your hens a break, don't add light. It is simple like that. As much as I am not a 'treat' person, I do like to give nutritious treats to aid in production and 'bribe' the ladies. While quail are pretty productive rain or shine, chickens can be more temperamental. We still love them though. Some great treats we give tend to have more protein in them but also essential vitamins. Such treats are mealworms, crickets, and black oil sunflowers. We do give the Mexican Sunflower leaves to them too to much on. Today's 'treat' is black oil sunflower seeds. I learned about this treat when I showed chickens and still use it occassionally. Black Oil Sunflower Seeds adds protein, specifically methionine, a very important amino acid in birds, and vitamin E, which help keep those feathers shiny and with sheen. The oils help make their feathers a bit more water resistant too (which helps with the rainy cold days). The seeds also contain magnesium, which helps with metabolism and muscle tone (very important components for a laying hen). Overall, The seeds have been known to increase egg production in hens, help with weight gain, and adds more nutrients in both eggs and meat. It's a win for for all of us! . . . . . . . . #healthyfood, #sunflowers, #boss, #chickensofinsta, #chickensofinstagram, #stellargamebirds, #healthy, #nutrition, #chickenhealth, #healthybirds, #wednesday, #yum, #coldfront, #spoiledchickens, #brrr, #cold, #floridacoldfront, #thequaillady . . . . . .
