Please Consider

Good morning/afternoon/evening to you all. Normally, I wouldn’t think I’d have to do something like this, but I’m in need of some help financially. Since moving to a new state with my wife & son, things have been pretty hard for us as our debts keep on climbing. He is my only son, barely 5 ½ months old, but he is the light of my life & we want to give him a brighter future. That’s why I’ve come before you all to ask you to simply consider purchasing a copy of one of my two books, a Dystopian/Sci-Fi novel titled Blood Tournaments and a poetry collection titled The Caterpillar Man. I know it’s a shot in the dark, & it’s very likely this post won’t see much of any traction at all, but I’m trying everything I can here. While I may not be especially aware of everyone’s economic situation, I do know what I’m asking may be a lot - especially for some stranger you’ve never met on the internet. Nevertheless, I would be forever in everyone’s debt if they would be so kind as to consider helping. 

I’m not asking for a handout out of any sort - I just need a little help is all. You may see this same post in different communities on here as well since I’m trying to reach as many people as possible. Below are the links to both books. Queer rights may be about our right to be normal- to be normal couples, to live normal trans lives, to be normal people. But queer rights are also about our autonomy to be odd. We are QUEER, after all- weird, odd, not normal. And that is something that was originally imposed upon us, but we have taken it. It is ours now. Because lgbt rights are about our right to be normal, yes, but it is also about bodily autonomy! It is about our right to live our lives with odd genders and weird relationship structures and queer bodies. Assimilation might sound like a fine way to escape prejudice- but quite frankly, it doesn't matter. Because we are not just fighting for our rights to live like cishet people, we are also fighting for our right to live without having to worry about putting a toe out of line. We are queer, and we always will be. We won't really be free until we can live our lives as odd, as strange, as queer as we want.

Humbled by gifts, a burdened sapling,

I wait for the fruit to ripen and fall.

Once it rots I’ll be free to grow

Upwards again, away from my roots

That Which Is Broken

That which is broken,

Love can mend.

For if it be true it will never end.

Yesterday’s pain has become completely undone,

Two lonely hearts that have been won.

A lover’s eyes can bring serenity,

For this love is surely destiny.

No matter what life will demand,

True love will face it hand in hand.

In the darkened void of a lost soul,

A long-dead spirit is made whole.

For what was will be once more,

And the passion will restore.

In this game we play called life,

Through struggle & strife,

Can make two lovers become husband & wife.

Ones pursuit of both love & joy

Trumps all who seek to destroy.

You could write entire libraries filled with tales of lamentation & ecstasy,

& every one of them would have love’s recipe.

Those who have not known what true love provides

Know it no differently than stranger tides.

May this love find its way to all who read these words,

& may it be written in all the records.

🌊My favorite books tend to be YA sci-fi and fantasy (usually urban fantasy) however I've also enjoyed many contemporary stories. I enjoy both novels and comics/graphic novels, and prefer diverse stories with characters varying in race, sexuality, gender, ability, etc etc

About My Writing

🌊My current wip is called Lungs and Gills, hence my username, though for years it was originally called Pearl Thief, and that's what people who followed my first writeblr may remember it as

🌊Its a post-apocalyptic fantasy story about mermaids and how they deal with ocean pollution after it's destroyed their civilization and caused those who've gotten sick from the pollution to become zombie-like shells of who they used to be

🌊I also write fanfic, which you can find at my main account, @joyful-soul-collector

🌊Occasionally I may also post about a ghost story, which I've only ever talked about here once before, but I plan on writing once LAG is complete

There’s a protest going on against AI art over on artstation, so I feel like now is the time for me to make a statement on this issue! 

I wholeheartedly support the ongoing protest against AI art. Why? Because my artwork is included in the datasets used to train these image generators without my consent. I get zero compensation for the use of my art, even though these image generators cost money to use, and are a commercial product. 

Musicians are not being treated the same way. Stability has a music generator that only uses royalty free music in their dataset. Their words: “Because diffusion models are prone to memorization and overfitting, releasing a model trained on copyrighted data could potentially result in legal issues.” Why is the work of visual artists being treated differently?

Many have compared image generators to human artists seeking out inspiration. Those two are not the same. My art is literally being fed into these generators through the datasets, and spat back out of a program that has no inherent sense of what is respectful to artists. As long as my art is literally integrated into the system used to create the images, it is commercial use of my art without my consent.

Until there is an ethically sourced database that compensates artists for the use of their images, I am against AI art. I also think platforms should do everything they can to prevent scraping of their content for these databases. 

Artists, speak out against this predatory practice! Our art should not be exploited without our consent, and we deserve to be compensated when our art is exploited for commercial use.
