I finally thought of a better adjective to describe myself and I kinda like this other place.
So.
Yeah.
Check it out.
I am now complete.
It came yesterday.
The part of my life I have been long waiting for.
My Green Apple KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer.
I know, I sounds like an old housewife being so excited for this mixer, but I've always wanted one. And I was positive that anything I made would taste a million times better.
As I walked up to the front door when I got home from work, I squealed (a rare occurrence) when I saw the huge box from the UPS dude.
It took all of 15 seconds for me to rip open the box and start playing with it.
As soon as the mixer was out, it met up with its long lost friends.
I'll never say if I actually used all of this butter for the cupcakes and frosting I made. Okay, maybe I did.
Here's me with my mixer, Vanna, named after the wonderful letter-turner who I was fortunate enough to meet last December. Note my displaying arms, like Vanna. Sadly, my arms are about 17 times bigger than hers. I would know. I've seen them.
Maybe it's all the butter I've been eating...Nah.
I even wore a green headband for the occasion. Well, actually, my hair was kinda greasy, but it just so happens that I had the green headband on already. Coincidence? No.
I also look like I'm 14 in that picture.
Anyway.
Luckily, I had the perfect need for this mixer yesterday: I volunteered to make cupcakes for a bridal shower being thrown for a nurse at my workplace. I did a little re-con work and found out that her wedding colors are purple and black and her favorite cake is white cake with white frosting.
A bit bland for my tastes, but I'll still make them.
It is so nice to not have to hold the mixer. I could get used to this.
Action shot!
The recipe I used can be found here.
I've only heard good things about them from the people who've tried them, but I haven't gotten a chance to eat one myself. I'm trying to work on my self-restraint.
Plus, I prefer something with chocolate. Literally, anything with chocolate.
Oh yeah, I'd eat that.
I'd try it.
Okay, I draw the line with chocolate-covered scorpion.
While I've been day-dreaming of chocolate, cupcakes baked.
Pay no attention to the crud on the window of my oven. At least it's not dog hair.
And now for the part where I get a sugar-high from "taste testing" the frosting to make sure that it's just right.
After this I went into a sugar coma for 10 hours.
I decided to pipe on the frosting since it's really so much easier and looks much more impressive. And at this point, I was more focused on watching America's Got Talent than frosting two dozen cupcakes.
As I sat and watched some trapeze artists from St. Paul, I heard a faint voice coming from the kitchen.
Rae....come and eat one of us....
We won't go straight to your hips.
We promise.
We are starved for attention. So is your stomach.
EAT US NOW!!!!!!!
Needless to say, the voices from the kitchen won.
Stupid voices.
***Please forgive the quality of these pictures. They were taken on my phone. Except for the chocolate covered stuff. Those were taken from Google.
what an itch.
Thanks to my ancestors, blood sucking creatures love me. Like way more than any normal person. Luckily I've never ran into a vampire, but I'm sure that it would not go well.
But I do normally have onion breath.
It'd probably work the same as having garlic, right?
Anyway.
I've got this friend, you see. She's like a nomad, only she normally sleeps indoors. I live vicariously through her travels. It's cheaper for me that way.
On occasion, she'll come visit MN and stay with me, Steve, and The Beast. Last weekend was one of those times, but it turned into a time I'll never forget because of all the blood we donated to the local insect community.
On Saturday we had a grill-out with another pair of friends, that recently got hitched.
The food was delisc delish delisc. The drinks were strong. I drank a few five too many.
Then we decided to have a little bonfire to make some s'mores, the poor man's creme brulee.
The boy-scout Steve set out to make the perfect fire. There was adequate seating, so this short friend of mine and I sat on our swing that we had moved to the inferno.
Now, you see, the swing's seat was made out of this heavy-duty mesh stuff but it's not all that holey. And we both had yoga pants on, to avoid as much visible skin as possible.
There was citronella flowing as the five of us tried to defend ourselves from the state bird of MN: the mosquito.
I don't ever remember them being so bad at our house before. We were all practically sitting in the fire. I'm surprised I still have eyebrows.
We eat s'mores. I have another drink or three. The married friends go home. We watch Entourage. And pass out on the couch/chair.
The next day we went to a Twins game, which was sweltering.
Then trekked over to the MOA. By this point, we were tired, but mostly hungry.
Went to this fun pizza place. Ate and dreamed of yoga pants.
But then it started.
Jenni talked about how she had quite a few mosquito bites.
On her tush.
I laughed and then all of the sudden, my butt starting itching as well.
The more time went on, the worse it got. By the time we got back to the house, the itching was unbearable!
After a final tally, I had 8 bites and she had 9 or 10 or something around that (correction: 17 total bug bites...it's still a touchy subject...), just edging me out for best tasting blood. Luckily we were in it together, one application of cortisone cream at a time. We even had similar bite patterns.
There are very few people with who I would discuss my horrific mosquito bite catastrophe in great detail including size, color, and location while scratching them with the knobs on my kitchen cabinets.
I'm glad she's my friend.
And that we're so weird classy.
Note: this photo is from about 2005 or so. So, yeah, we don't really look like that anymore.
Also note: margarita bucket in the background. I want one. Immediately.
Really note: the super awesome shirt I'm wearing. I still have it. Even though it'd only go to my belly button. I just can't part with supreme awesomeness.
It's also my personal mantra. And my excuse to not work out. Ever.
craftiness
Because we have a husky, we often find ourselves going on walks around the neighborhood. Rarely works, but it gives us a chance to critique our neighbors' yards/decks/garbage in their yard/yard sale selections/children.
We were walking along this "new" found path (which I sure is the home to many-a snake) and discovered this whole other neighborhood that we never knew was there.
Most of the houses were duplexes, but this one house had really neat flower pots out in front.
So, we decided to steal their idea. Best of all, most of our neighbors have never been back there and probably have not seen these cool pots before. They'll think we came up with it all on our own.
Ha!
I'm not creative.
After an exciting trip to Menards (that has escalators for carts...whole nother story...), we were home with a stick, some pots, dirt, and marigolds.
Twenty minutes later...
BOOM!
Craft completed!
Feta even helped a little bit by cleaning up the spilled dirt on the sidewalk. With her tongue.
Instructions:
1. Stick the stick into the ground where you want the pots. Make sure that the stick will fit through the holes in the bottom of the pots before you leave the store.
2. Place bottom pot through stick and onto ground.
3. Have husband fill with dirt because we had to buy the biggest bag of dirt possible and I'm far too weak to lift it.
4. Take second biggest pot and place on top of bottom pot, making sure to stick the stick through it.
5. Repeat Step 4 with however many pots there are. Or before your patience runs out.
6. Fill remaining pots with dirt.
7. Tell dog to stop eating flowers.
8. Tell husband it's too hot outside to continue.
9. Plant flowers.
10. Listen to husband say something about filling up the pots too much with dirt and it's just going to spill out everywhere because of....something....and then zone out.
11. Take picture of husband and dog next to pot. (Watering can optional)
Note: That mound of dirt in the flowerbed to the right is still there. It's a reminder of how none of the plants I've planted there have lived. It's a graveyard of foliage.
And don't be fooled by the flowers back there...they are in a box and were just put there just before this picture was taken. And now, 2 days later, dead.
I'm awesome.
enough.
I don't care if you don't want to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle, even though I would. You'll only hurt yourself.
I don't care if you don't want to wear your seat-belt while in a car, even though I always do. You'll only hurt yourself.
What I do care about is the idiots that take to the road after throwing back a few too many tequila shots. They could hurt me and those that I love, and I'm just not okay with that.
I'm not the world's most perfect driver, but there is no way that I'll put others in danger by making the idiotic mistake of getting behind the wheel not sober.
On Monday night, we were at our friends' house grilling out with a few other people. We decided to skip out early and not go to the fireworks since Tuesday was a work-day and it was an hour drive home.
Traffic wasn't too bad, but as we kept nearing Delano, the number of cars picked up as well as the reckless maneuvers that could only be explained by drunkenness.
Highway 12 is a two-lane highway that curves and curves, rarely allowing any cars the opportunity to pass the slowers ones. Trust me, I've been stuck behind many, many, many, many of these slower ones. It's also really the only straight shot to get home.
While driving along Highway 12, moving with the flow of traffic, a four-door tin can comes speeding up behind me, only to pass me and barely miss the oncoming car and my front bumper. The car was filled with 4 guys, looking to be about 18 or 19, with the back two passengers turning around to stare at me.
I yelled a few expletives and flashed gang symbols at them, making them fear for their lives. Or maybe not. It was dark. Hard to tell.
Of course, as soon as we passed a cop strategically hidden along the side of the road, this car obeyed every single traffic law...except for tailgating.
Cop doesn't flinch.
Eventually this a-hole car turns off to find their perfect viewing area, only to be replaced by an even more disturbing a-hole.
We finally made it through Delano and were on the last stretch toward home when we were held up by a car going 30. In a 55. With a steady stream of oncoming traffic, leaving me no other choice other than to just follow behind.
Up behind me comes another speeding car. While riding my back bumper, this car dramatically swerves into oncoming traffic not once, but four different times, almost hitting me and the other car heading straight for it. Once the a-hole saw the headlights, he'd swerve over to avoid getting hit, going so far at to be driving on completely top of the rumble strip.
Anytime there was a turn lane, he'd try to pass me in it.
Seriously, dude? You realize that I'm not the one going so slow, right?
The kicker is: we passed another strategically placed cop in the passing lanes (aka the one opportunity to get around the slow-poke). Nothing once again.
The a-hole had whipped around me before the passing lane even started and then took off. His recklessness purely astounded me.
Through this escapade, Steve slept.
I tried to catch him (once I passed the cop) and I was gaining no ground on him when I was going 70.
There's one stoplight in Montrose and it came to be very helpful in my journey to catch this dude. Driving like that only saved him about 7 seconds. In fact, I was able to follow him almost all the way to his house without his knowledge.
Because he lives in my neighborhood.
So, I am writing to you, the Reckless A-Hole of Montrose: the very apparent drunk driver who almost ran me off the road four times.
What the hell is wrong with you?
I'm just glad there were no passengers in your car. I can only hope that you never have passengers in your car when you make this stupid decision again, which I'm sure you inevitably will.
Drunk driving is never okay, D-bag.
Scorching day on Sunday. And yes, we were the ones that brought the Brewers fan.
locked-out
This weekend was the 2nd annual Besser-brothers' weekend at a cabin up north. Last year was pretty eventful:
The Beast had half of her whiskers melted by her oldest uncle when he tried to light the grill, dropped the match underneath the deck, and then tried to light the grill again, without turning the propane off. Feta was standing a wee bit too close. We kept an eye on her this year.
Steve was thrown overboard by his youngest brother. He had on his prescription sunglasses. They ended up at the bottom of the lake.
I wasn't too sure what to expect now, but we made a few preparatory steps to prevent any repeat mishaps. Steve's had lasik since last summer and we knew we needed to keep a close eye on Feta around this group. We thought we'd be made in the shade, drinking delicious Skittles vodka that the pyromaniac oldest brother made and eating s'mores.
The oldest and 3rd oldest brother had the two boats at the launch, so they were in need of some help from Steve. He took The Beast to drive one boat over to the cabin, where I was to stand on the dock so they knew they were at the right place.
I drive to the cabin. Almost hit a deer in the driveway. In the middle of the afternoon. They're out at that time in the day?
I had gotten the key from the cabin owner earlier in the week. We rented this place last year, so I was pretty confident that everything, as far as the cabin went, would be the same.
Try the front door: key doesn't work.
Try the back basement door: key doesn't work.
Try the two screen doors to get onto the porch and be able to try the side door.
Locked.
Locked.
By this point, we'd been in the car for a while. And I had to pee. I sat on the porch steps and contemplated my options:
Pee in my pants. Nope, not an option. Gross.
Pee in the yard. Also not an option. Too many neighbors around outside.
Wade into the lake in my jeans and pee in there. Not this one either. These were my only long pants. I needed to protect myself from mosquitoes. Not that they ended up helping anyway. Those jerks love the taste of my Irish blood.
Just when all my options seemed to have disappeared. I remembered that there was a sliding door on the back deck. All I had to do was climb from where I was (stairs of the porch) to the back deck. And not pee my pants.
Easy.
Well, maybe not.
I'm not the most athletic or flexible person. It was going to be quite the feat.
To help illustrate, I made a diagram in Excel. Be impressed.
Not drawn to scale. Obviously. And don't mind the grid-lines, either.
So here I sit. What else is there for me to do?
I straddled the gap, praying that I don't fall.
Note: flipflops are not the proper cabin scaling footwear. This was discovered once I was already hovering 15 feet over concrete.
I tripped onto the deck and have to regain my composure, positive that no one will believe this.
I walked over to the sliding doors.
Locked.
And locked.
At this point, I almost just peed right there on the deck, but then I look to my right and see my definite last chance: the screen door going from the back deck to the screened-in porch.
Deep breath.
It's open!
And the key works in the side door!
I rushed and have never felt so relieved in my life.
I came out of the cabin with just enough time to see Steve pulling the boat up to the dock, with The Beast doing her best Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet impression.
Great way to start a relaxing weekend.
movie review: bridesmaids
Love.
Way too funny.
My favorite part would probably be when Annie is driving back and forth trying to get Officer Rhodes' attention. Hilarious.
All I can say is see this movie! Yeah, there's one gross-out part, but I can look right past that at all of the great lines.
Megan definitely steals the show. And the entire airplane scene was much funnier to me knowing that Megan and the actor who plays the man next to Megan on the plane are married in real life.
You know, anyone who wants to marry my brother is a profound idiot.
Megan, from the movie Bridesmaids
Went to go see this movie on Saturday with my friend and STOVE Steve. Review to come later. Because my opinion in that important. Seriously, it is. I used to work at Movie Gallery. BOOM! Street cred.
show-stopper
This weekend we decided to mosey on into a nearby city to enjoy their summer festival. We really just wanted to go see the dog agility performances, since that's where we took The Beast to "obedience" school. And to eat cheese curds. (How did I never know about cheese curds until I moved to MN? They're delisc!)
The park was packed with people, especially families wanting their kids to learn how to fish. Way too many people for my liking. But The Beast was the show of the festival.
Seriously. We were walking and person after person after person with missing teeth asked, "Oh, can I pet your dog? She's so pretty!"
Who? This cat dog?
*Note my awesome smurf-ness. I love being able to wear pajamas scrubs to work. And what's up with my left eye. That's funky. I don't like it.
**Also Note: I'm not 12. I swear.
That's a bit better.
Some people weren't as forward, but we could hear them: "Man! Look at that dog! That's a cool dog!" Not to sound braggy, but a lot of people, no matter where we go, compliment us on our four-legged kid. She's kinda the coolest.
But what they don't realize by just looking at her is that she's no ordinary dog:
She burps in your face.
She stands on your hair while you lie in bed so that she can lick your face without you escaping.
She's afraid of dragonflies. That are on the other side of the window.
The jingle of her tags can put fear into anyone, knowing that a dog body-slam is in their near future.
She jumps in drained koi ponds that are now complete mud.
She will find a way to take your spot on the couch, even if you're the only one sitting on it.
She eats (numerous) DVDs.
She'll sass you. Always.
Going to this festival made me realize that maybe I take this furball for granted. She's always super excited to see me when I get home. She loves to cuddle. She'll watch the Bachelorette with me. She'll eat food off of the floor so I don't need to sweep.
She could have run away with the circus, but she decided to keep our lives exciting and different every day.
Freakout Friday
Ugh.
Today was starting off really well. I got to wear jeans and sandals to work and there was even going to be chocolate cake (aka my first true love). But then, I needed to get some blood work done.
You see, apparently no one has record of me getting the MMR vaccination. No one. Not the state of Michigan. Not my high school (which needed all my records for me to attend way back when). Not even my own mother. So, that's great. I kinda need this for work, since I work in a medical-type place.
The only (and easiest, supposedly) solution was to get a titer taken to show that I have immunity to mumps, measles, and rubella. I don't mind getting blood drawn. I have no fear of needles or blood or whatnot. The problem---of which I have many---is I just can't believe that no one has any record of this vaccination. Really? My mom's response:
"Maybe you didn't get it."
You don't remember? Isn't that something every kid gets, unless their mom is cray-cray and thinks vaccinations give you autism? Seriously, Mom?
I made an appointment yesterday to have my blood drawn this morning. The scheduler gave me directions and told me, "Oh yeah, just check in at the front desk." Okay. Easy enough.
Nope. The lady there tells me I just need to go to the lab since I'm not seeing a provider, only having blood work. Still somewhat chipper, I go down the stairs to the lab. And that's where I met the lab tech from hell.
You'd think that in order to work with patients you'd need some people skills. That is not the case apparently. I give her my name, which I needed to spell twice, and tell her why I am there: a titer for the MMR vaccination, to show immunity. The entire time, she is speaking quite loudly. And she's totally giving me attitude, which I don't quite understand why. Was it because I spelled my name, but you still spelled it wrong and I had to correct you? Sorry I tried to help you find my records in a timely fashion. Oy.
"Ma'am. There are no orders in here. You need to see a nurse first. You need to check-in upstairs."
"I tried, but they told me to just come down to the lab and check in. I'm not supposed to be seeing anyone for this. I just need it for work."
"Did you talk to Achmed?
"Who?"
eye-roll "Achmed."
"Achmed?"
"Yee-ah."
"I talked to someone at the front desk. I don't know who it was."
"Have a seat." loud, ridiculously loud sigh
At this point, I'm getting a bit peeved, but whatever. Electronic records aren't always reliable. I take a seat, maybe 15 feet away from her. The waiting room is quite full. I can hear her clearly as she says, "Yeah, I don't know why she was sent down her, but I don't have any orders for (says my name very loudly and clearly, making sure to emphasize how it is pronounced). She's down her saying she needs a titer for her MMR." And I'm talking about speaking in a definite "way too loud to be speaking in a public place voice." The kind of voice you would glare at on the bus.
The lab tech hangs up the phone, then calls another person, this time speaking very quietly and I can't hear her at all. Oh. So you do know how to speak appropriately? Impressive, lady. Geeze. Talk about HIPAA.
"Ma'am. You need to go back upstairs."
Now, I've had enough.
#1. She called me "ma'am". Twice.
#2. She was rude. I have no tolerance for rude people in a patient care setting. It's not okay.
I march back up the stairs and go to the front desk. I see a nurse standing behind one of the front desk people, who happens to have a small sign on the desk, reading "Occupational Medicine".
Oh.
Occ. Med.
Not Achmed.
Okay, now I've lost it.
#3. This lab tech was using abbreviations that are not commonly known to people and expecting me to know. What the hell.
I tell the nurse and front desk person who I am and why I'm there. The nurse says, "What kind of titer do you need?"
"MMR."
"Oh, okay. I wasn't sure. On your appointment it says '4 MMR'."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"It's supposed to be I'm coming in for a MMR titer."
This is why short-hand texting drives me nutso. Who is running the show at this place?! 13-year-olds?
I ask, "Didn't the lab tech person tell you this? Why did I need to tell you?"
"Well, I'll put the orders in now."
Way to avoid the question, nursey.
"You can head back down to the lab."
Great. My favorite-est place in the whole world. Back to hell I went.
Those are flames next behind the devil lab tech. It looked just like this down there. Only less flames. And no visible horns. She was seated so I can not verify whether or not she had a tail.
"I'm baaaa-aaaack. The orders are supposed to be in now," I say with a big grin. I'm gonna kill this biotch with any type weapon from the board game Clue kindness.
"Take a seat." grumble grumble grumble
Some people just can't be helped.
The rest of the blood draw went without a hitch. Made the phlebotomist laugh, but not while the needle was in my arm. That's no laughing matter.
one week and one day
I'm currently at one week and one day free of caffeine. It's been rough. Headaches, trouble concentrating, but I made it. I think.
And it's a good thing that I'm cutting back on my pop intake, since I'll be getting two fillings next week, with a few other teeth on the "watch list".
I'm tired.
bad habit
I'm gross.
I pick at my fingers, but I'm trying to stop...
So, instead of getting a normal manicure for my friend's wedding this weekend, I decided to get a "shellac" manicure. I first heard about this on PW and decided to give it a try. Supposed it last 3 weeks, but we'll see.
I got them done on Friday, and after 3 days, my nails looks like they were just done. So far, so good.
I'm really hoping that by having my nails look so nice, I'll stop picking at them once and for all. Plus, it's a great excuse to go get my nails done.
I'm not going to put a picture of the nails up today, but maybe once they start falling apart.
The Beast loves to find sticks. And then chew them into little bits. Unfortunately the easiest sticks for her to find were my rose bush and, in the winter, our tree branches. That's right. The tree branches. Our snow piles were so high that she could easily stand on them and eat our trees.
Doesn't Steve look thrilled in this picture?
movie review: the fighter
I write this as if my opinion matters. I know it doesn't.
Overall, it was good. I was actually surprised by how much I like it, but then I look back and realized it all makes sense why I liked it so much:
Mark Wahlberg with no shirt on.
The crazy sisters. Makes me wish I had sisters. Wait...no, it doesn't.
The accents. I walked around for the rest of the night practicing it in my head, complete with overuse of f-bombs and other cursing.
Mark Wahlberg with no shirt on.
I thought the acting was great, especially watching the clip at the end of the actual Ward brothers. Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale nailed it.
Not too violent, which was what I was worried about. The last movie that I watch that took place in a ring was The Wrestler. I still have issues eating with forks after that.
The cake. After seeing the cake at the gym, all I could think about was cake and eating cake and eating large pieces of cake and being ashamed of myself for eating the entire cake by myself. I love cake.
Mark Wahlberg with no shirt on.
There are lots of other reasons I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, but these are the ones I could think of right now, so that's all you're getting.
I'm clearly possessed. Clearly.
So, I've noticed lately that I've been drinking a lot of pop. A LOT. Then my teeth started hurting and I started to be about the size of a house. I made an appointment at the dentist (which is tomorrow) and decided that maybe it was the pop I was drinking.
So I stopped.
Yesterday.
And it hurts. My headache yesterday kept getting worse and worse as the day went on. Today it's not too bad, but it's still there.
This isn't to say that I'm completely giving up pop, because I love it. Pop makes my heart happy. I just don't want to be as dependent on it as I was. And I want to be thinner, so why not cut down on the endless number of calories I drank each day?
Needless to say, I've had a wee bit of difficulty concentrating today, especially since I'm working in an oven and the weather outside my window looks gorgeous.
I miss my dear friend, Dr. Pepper. He was so good to me in so many way. Cooled me down on a summer day. Picked me up when I was dragging at work. And depending on what my dentist says tomorrow, I may never see him again. Well, maybe not never. (Ooo...double negative. Bad grammar makes my skin crawl.)
I could always just have a secret affair with him, only meeting incognito, where no one will see us. I'll just need to buy a wig and some large sunglasses to wear in my office. This plan is genius.
Bentley and William: two morons in their own right
Yeah, I'll admit it: I watch the Bachelor/ette series. The show makes me feel good about myself because a lot of people on there are a wee bit cray-cray, if not totally bonkers. Plus, my two friends and I like to write back and forth about how ridiculous the show is. The emails are a highlight of my week.
Now here is what I think on Week 3 of the Ashley Season of The Bachelorette (not that it matters):
William is an idiot. Insulting a girl is not the way to win her over. And he was doing so well with winning her over. I really liked him at first, but seriously? Well, at least he was trying to roast Ashley, unlike the every other guy who did the same "he's ugly" or "this dude's wore a mask" jokes. And I'm not all that surprised that Ashley kept him around. She's a big fan of second chances aka she went on this show again.
The FlashMob dance was really fun. And Ben C. is fun. I'm just not so convinced that Ashely is this awesome dancer that everyone is saying that she is. I haven't been too impressed, especially on the last episode where she just rode the platform up and posed. During a dance routine.
The whole Bentley thing: geeze. What drama. Once again, why the show makes me feel good about myself. I think it's interesting that it took so long for a total a-hole like Bentley to get on the show and be honest (there have been plenty of a-holes, just not honest ones). I bet that Ashley is just kicking herself watching the episodes now, but hopefully she is so happy with whatever the outcome that it doesn't matter. But, man, that Guys Tell All episode is going to be AWESOME!
What I don't really get is why Bentley thinks that he can be such an a-hole. It's not like he's hot. And for those who think he is, I don't see it. He seems like the big, dumb jock type. And a good actor. And I wish him luck ever getting another date ever again in his life, well, with a decent girl, that is.
JP. I like him. Mucho.
Until next Monday, when I'm sure some guy will do something stupid that will make Ashley upset.
