I just wanna talk about my experience being a college resident assistant real quick because there is no job i have personal knowledge of to this day that has fucking abused their workers in the specific way they do when youâre an RA.Â
Like, here is just a list of things I have had to do in my 2.5 years of being an RA.
Clean up blood, call an ambulance, and provide medical first aid. I was given no assistance and had to clean with no mask, gloves, or protective equipment. This occurred at 2am.
Was on call during the ENTIRE Texas snow storm. By myself. For 5 days. Day and night. This meant when any maintenance problem, lockout, power outage, ect happened i was in charge solely of dealing with it for an entire apartment complex.
wake up at ungodly hours of the night because someone thinks someone elses music is too loud
wake up at ungodly hours of the night because someone locked themselves out of their room
(TW suicide/alcohol) checked in with a suicidal, extremely drunk resident that was cursing and calling me names and screaming at me just for checking in with her. I was alone. This went on for 3 hours until 2am and by the time it was over i was having a legitimate panic attack in my apartment. I was still forced to work through the night and into the next day.
(TW suicide) I was told the next morning to go to the resident aboveâs room and âmake sure she isnât deadâ
I was forced to work immediately after slipping in water after the laundry room exploded with water even though I also had to submit workers comp. I was not actually compensated with time or money.
Our training consisted of a grueling 2 weeks straight of 8am-8pm days at the beginning of each semester
RAs were consistently left at the bottom of the priority list for every situation, emergency or otherwise
We were made to work in an office that had no working air conditioning. In Texas. For hours.
RAs mental health was completely disregarded at all times and although in training we were constantly told âitâs okay to ask for extensionsâ they were either not given or we were guilted heavily for taking them.
We were expected to work even when we werenât working. If you were minding your business in your daily life and something happened that you could take care of you were expected to.
I once asked my supervisor if he could address ableism I was experiencing with the other RAs and I was told that I, actually, instead, could tell people directly at the next staff meeting to stop asking invasive questions about why I use a cane. I dont have to explain why thats fucked up.
And so, so much more. The best part? We arenât fucking PAID. we are not paid for our desk shifts, we arenât paid to be on call, we arenât paid for all the insane hours we are made to work while we are also expected to be good students (you could be fired for doing badly in school), not a dollar ever actually touched our hands. We were given a room and limited access to food. Thatâs it.Â
So if you think when you go to college maybe youâll be a resident assistant, unless you absolutely MUST do so to continue your education like I did, donât. Itâs detrimental to your health. It really is.
