Just One Question
Genre: Angst, Hurt no comfort(?), Angst with no happy ending(?).
Word count: 3k+ words
Pairing: Defender!Strange x Variant!Sorcerer!Fem!Reader, Stephen Strange x Fem!Reader
Additional Character: America Chavez, Original!Male!Character, Wong (mentioned)
Summary: After months of being left in the dark, after your husband left and never came back. You finally had enough and search for the answer yourself, even though it means for you to use the Darkhold and to Dreamwalk to your alternate self. To ask Just one question.
A/n: My first post here on this site, what's a better way to start your whole writing here other than some angst!
So I've been stumbling over various Defender!Strange x Reader fics, fluff and smut. The evil voice in the back of my head asked; "Defender Strange died and his body never returns to his Universe, so people back in his Universe never knew what actually had happened to him,"
I thought, "this would be one hell of a fic,"
No beta reader, and probably some grammar mistakes. But still, enjoy~
Pacing back and forth between your room, biting your fingers as your mind goes into an internal debate. The room has been cleared of any obstacles, giving you the space you need to proceed with your plan. If you actually do it.
Months have passed by ever since you lost contact with your significant other. Sure it wasn’t uncommon for Stephen to leave you behind for his duties as both the Sorcerer Supreme and one of the Defenders, but months without contact or anything had left you in the dark with thousands of thoughts and the lingering terrible feeling inside.
To make things worse, just a day after his departure you were awoken with a horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach. The dreams you had a few days after didn’t help either.
You knew that he left to help America Chavez with the book of Vishanti. The fact that just before his departure with America, Stephen had told you about his plan if the worst-case scenario would happen.
“Whatever it takes, I need to keep America safe. Even if it means for us to let her go, for her own safety.”
You could only hope for their safety, which America seemed to get. In your dreams, well not technically a dream because you knew that it happened somewhere in the Multiverse, you saw her happily smiling with Stephen–other him–at Kamar-Taj as Stephen taught her Magic. She’s safe with another Stephen Strange, and probably another You too.
Then, what happened to your Stephen? Deep down inside, the voices and the rational side at the back of your head knew the answer. While the other side still held close the hope and the faith you had in him.
But as time passed by everything became harder for you to take in. Those dreams and how everything started to remind you of Stephen, started to overwhelm you. Nights where you bolted out of your sleep drenched in sweat and tears, where you reached for the other side of the bed longing for his touch as he hugged you closer. It hurts like hell to the point that you become desperate.
Desperate not for the touch of your beloved, or desperate for the happiness that you lost. You knew that it was impossible to get him back if you were just sitting here waiting for an answer.
You became desperate for an answer to what had happened to him. An answer. It was the only thing you wanted.
And that was how you got to this point. You stopped your tracks, focusing your gaze back on that damned book. The Darkhold. No one has the ability to travel between universes physically other than America Chavez.
The Darkhold had its own way, a spell that can move your consciousness from one universe to another. The risk is huge, with the potential of incursion and destruction of one or two universes. POTENTIAL. That's the keyword. This means there should be a chance that nothing will happen if you only use the spell once.
Of course, using the book just for a few minutes at the longest would hurt anyone but yourself, right?
Even if there’s a chance nothing will happen, the Darkhold demands something from its user. And sure the Defenders won’t let you go easily if they ever found out, you just need to be careful.
Just for an answer. That’s it. One simple question.
“What happened to Stephen?”
You sighed, convincing yourself; ONE QUESTION. Only this once you will use the Darkhold. After this, if the Defender found out or anyone found out about your wrongdoings. You’ll accept whatever the punishment will be.
"Just one question."
You convinced yourself and any higher being who's currently watching you. Praying that they will let your action just this once.
A spell was cast, locking the door and preventing anyone from finding out what will occur here. Twisting your wrist in the air, you lit up the candles you had prepared for the spell, and you opened the Darkhold, revealing the spell of Dreamwalking.
Red orbs shone in your surroundings with strings of red light connecting each. When you close your eyes, you could feel the rush of power inside your veins, giving you temptation into the dark side of sorcery. Promising you the happiness that you lost if you continue this dark corrupted path.
A Universe where you can be happy with Stephen, a way to get him back.
You let out a gasp as you opened your eyes once again, hands trembling at the thoughts. You knew that the darkhold wields great power, maybe there is a way to have him back–No. What were you thinking?
Sparkling soft light from the gold band from your ring fingers caught your attention. Shame rose inside your chest from even thinking of using the darkhold for other purposes. Stephen would scold you for using this Darkhold once, you can't imagine how he would feel if he saw you walking through the dark path.
FOCUS.
Twisting your hands, moving and searching between the orbs, looking through many versions of you. One of the orbs showed a flash of dark long hair with a blueish jacket. Found her.
You picked the orb and slammed it into the book, changing your position into a lotus as you float in the air. Dreamwalking has been cast.
***
Today was one of the rare domestic days you could have. With you and Stephen free from your duties as the Master of New York Sanctum, America had convinced the both of you to have a movie night together.
It has been a while since the last time you took a break with your fiance, and now also with your unofficial daughter. Since Stephen refused to leave the Sanctum after being away from it for around a week, the three of you came to an agreement to have the rest of the night watching Movies.
You sat next to Stephen and occasionally laid your head on his shoulder as America laid her head on your thighs while eating her Pizza slice. Twenty minutes into the Movie, you started to feel light throbbing on your head, you shrugged it off as some passing pain.
Until your ears began to ring, you started to sit upright pulling away from Stephen as you rub your eyes.
"You okay?" Stephen asked, to which you replied with a nod.
“Just a little dizzy, I think I’m going to grab some water.” you stood up as you flashed him a reassuring smile, “it was probably nothing, no need to pause the Movie,”
You walked away to the kitchen, but before you managed to reach for the glass, the throbbing returned along with the ringing. This time it was stronger, causing you to almost lose your balance and stumble over the counter.
You held your head trying to control your breathing in an attempt to reduce the pain. You reached for the sink, with a small mirror next to it.
“It’s okay, let me borrow this body for a minute,”
Your eyes widened in surprise as you turned your head to the mirror only to see a glimpse of yourself with a different appearance. Then everything went black.
***
You let out a soft gasp, vision slightly blurry before your mind finally adjusted to the new surrounding light. Briefly, ten seconds later, you turned your head around the room. It was easy to tell that this is the Sanctum kitchen, there's not much of a difference here.
Using the small mirror, you took a good look at this universe's version of you. Same hair color, same facial traits, same eye color but the most noticeable trait is none other than your hair.
This universe’s you had a (longer/shorter hair), a complete opposite of what you had. Then you remember your purpose here, you need to make things quick to decrease the chance of incursion.
“America! Can you give me a hand here?” you called for her.
“Hold on!”
Your heart aches when you hear her voice again. You took a deep breath, if you cry here it would attract more attention, and it was the last thing you needed. It was then you saw a gold band with an emerald cut around your ring fingers.
The aches inside your chest returned. So you were also bound with him in this Universe.
“One question,” you reminded yourself.
Her steps sounded louder before she finally waltzed in. You didn't have the heart to turn back to the door where she is.
“Sorry, needed to convince Stephen to pause the movie–hey are you alright?"
America walked closer when she realized that you hadn't looked at her at the moment. In confusion, she called for your name again before adding something.
"Are you okay? Should I call Stephen?"
“No. There’s no need,”
Hopefully, she didn't realize how you stuttered at the mention of his name or the slight crack within your voice.
“I need to talk to you for a moment, just one question,”
“Uh, okay? What’s up?” she came closer.
You straighten your pose, inhaling a small breath before putting a smile on your face, then finally turning your face in her direction. There you saw her again, the little girl you once thought of as your own daughter.
America narrowed her eyes upon seeing your oddly soft smile. But before she could say anything, you beat her to it. Just one question.
“Hello America, it’s been a while, my little dove,”
No not that. Your heart spoke louder than your mind, it beat your major purpose.
“What are you talking about–”
Her eyes widened in an instant upon she realized what you had called her. It seemed like in this universe's version you didn't call her that way. You gave her a closed-eye smile.
“(Y/n)...? Are you that…(Y/n)?” her voice cracked.
When you nod, you can see tears forming in her eyes along with guilt. “It’s me, I miss you little dove,”
You changed your posture into something she's familiar with. It took America a few moments before she grasped the fact that it was you here, you that she met in the other universe. Subconsciously you opened your arms, and America ran straight into your embrace. She missed you too, and that gave you a warm feeling inside your chest.
After hugging you for a few moments, her rational side returned. America pulled her away from you as she gave a look of confusion.
“How did you get here?” she asked, where you only smiled when she finally came to a realization.
“Dreamwalking, I want to ask you a question.”
You could see the fear in her eyes, as America debated whether she should call for Stephen or not. After everything she had been through, America knew the consequences of using the darkhold and dreamwalking.
Quickly you put your index finger to your mouth.
"Please, I just want to ask you something, after that, I'll leave this Universe. This will be the last time we speak of each other, so please…" you exhaled, "just one question."
You had a picture of what she has been through, mostly through your dreams about this universe which you had quite frequently a few months before. You just hope that America would agree to this, hoping that there’s a part of her that will agree after everything you both had been through.
When America nodded, you let out a breath of relief. With all the courage you had, you let out that one question. Reaching her arms, you gripped her slightly.
“What happened to Stephen?”
America had a good idea of what you’d ask, but hearing it out loud brought back the ache she felt months ago. Seeing your pained expression didn’t help either, sure what he did had hurt her before, but the guilt is also there. Because, even before she got sent into this universe, Stephen still helped her. She took a deep breath.
"He's gone," America began.
Your body stiffened, so the worst-case scenario had happened. Your hands trembling, your throat felt like it was burning and your chest felt like it had been stabbed a hundred times. It took all you had to prevent yourself to cry here. Your silence is a cue for America to continue her story. She knew that you wanted a full explanation of it.
"We…we almost got the book, then the demon blocked our way, then…then…he tried to take my power," she continued on, "But before he managed to do it, the demon stabbed him in the chest. It got me, but I opened the portal, in his last moments Stephen helped me to escape its grasp then I stumbled into this universe, I'm sorry,"
“No, it’s not your fault—”
“Hey, you two took a lot of time here.”
The both of you jolted as you tear your gaze from America to the owner of the voice by the doorway. Your heart aches as you look at him. Stephen stood by the doorway with confusion. He looked different from your Stephen.
His hair was shorter and his goatee slightly more trimmed. But other than that, his cerulean eyes, salt and pepper hair. It was all it took for a single tear to drop.
“Stephen…” you breathed out.
Stephen’s expression shifted from confusion into worry. “Is everything alright?”
“YES! We–we’re fine!” America responded almost too quickly.
Of course, Stephen didn't let that go, he took a step and that's where you raise your hand to stop him.
“Don’t, please don’t come any closer,” you demanded with a strictness you didn’t think you managed to voice out.
As much as you want to throw yourself into his arms, bury your face into his chest as you run your hands through his hair. You know that you can’t, this isn’t your universe, he isn’t your Stephen.
“(Y/n) is everything alright? Come on, talk to me.” His voice softened, laced with genuine worry.
"Well…" America looked between you and Stephen before focusing on the male sorcerer. "Please promise me you won't be mad, and let us explain."
To be completely honest, you couldn’t expect him to be ‘not mad’. Although you hoped that he’ll let you be a few more minutes, now that you had your answer. You wanted America to know the truth. Changing your purposes again.
Stephen narrowed his eyes, oddly enough, as much as his suspicion rose, Stephen couldn't feel any terrible feelings about the situation. America sighed, before looking in your direction.
She’s not sure herself of how Stephen would react to this. But Stephen did use Dreamwalking himself once, so it should be fine, right?
“Well, She’s not our (Y/n), she’s the (Y/n) I met with the Ponytail version of you,”
Stephen's eyes widened, “You—”
"Dreamwalking." You cut him short, before smiling. "Hi Stephen."
“You…you shouldn’t be here, if you continue, our universe–”
"Yes, I'm aware. I just wanted to talk with her to clarify things, after that…" Your demeanor changed as you gave Stephen a serious look. "You'll never see me again, I'll leave this Universe once and for all,"
Stephen tore his gaze from you back to America. “This is dangerous, she can’t be much longer.”
"I know, I know, three minutes!" America pleaded, "After this, she'll leave us, please Stephen."
You could tell that Stephen in an internal debate himself, sighed and nodded. You didn't expect him to do so, a part of you guessed that it was because America asked him, and the other part that it was because of you. A soft spot because you were just you, from a different universe.
America sighed in relief before turning her direction back at you. It seems like Stephen wouldn't let the two of you alone, he watches from where he stood. From his stance, you knew he was ready to take action if you dared to do something.
“Before he left, he told me about this plan just in case the worst scenario happens, I know what he did hurts you. I’m not asking you to forgive him, but I want you to know the truth,” you take a deep breath. “He never wanted to hurt or take your powers. He just wanted you to be safe, when he knew that he couldn’t help you anymore, he wanted you to run away, to leave this universe. And…he knew if trying to take your power will you to open the portal, so he did it.”
You could hold the tears in, it began to stream down through your eyes. America herself bit her lips, as tears formed in her eyes again.
“That was…”
"A shitty plan, I know," you let out a pained laugh and bitter smile, "Not that I agree with it, but he did it anyway,"
“I’m so sorry,” America repeated as she held back a sob.
“No, no, no. It’s not your fault, don’t cry dove.” Gently, you wiped away her tears from her face.
“Thank you…” she whispered, “I won’t lie, it did hurt me when he tried to take my power. But, hearing the other side of the story, relieved me a little.”
“Finally hearing your side of the story as well as the answer also relieved me.”
“Will you be okay?”
You smiled, “I will try too,”
America return the smile, now that you had finally received the answer. It’s time for you to go, but before that. You tore your gaze from America to Stephen–who was still in that stance–, you gave him a small smile.
"Stephen, take care of her and me in this Universe,"
“Don’t worry,” he raised his hands, showing you a familiar gold band. “I will,”
"Good, Thank you." you turned your gaze back to America reaching her face, and stroked her cheeks with your thumb. "Goodbye, dove"
***
“SNAP OUT OF IT!”
You shot your eyes open, the spell and ritual were broken. You stumbled down as the candles around the room died along with the fading red orbs. Before you managed to get up, a strong pair of hands gripped your arms, forcing you to sit up. The owner of the voice and arms looked you in the eyes.
“What were you thinking?! Do you have any ideas about your actions?!”
When you didn’t reply, the person shook you harder, slightly slapping your eyes. Causing you to snap back to reality. Upon seeing the pained expression on your face, he called your name again, this time with a gentler tone.
You know that he’s worried about you.
“Vion…” you called for his name.
His face filled with a pained expression as well as disappointment. He bit his lips, looking at you straight to your eyes,
"What did you do?" Vion–your younger brother–asked you. "What did you want with the Darkhold?"
“America, I talked to her,”
Vion's face turned into horror, "you…Dreamwalked? You Deamwalked to your other self?! Do you have any idea what it could have caused?!"
You tear your gaze from him to the floor, if he’s here then probably Wong already knows and warned the Defenders. Vion sighed, mumbling something under his breath before return his attention towards you.
"Sister, I know that you miss him more than anything, but this isn't the way. It's not worthy, whatever the Darkhold promised you regarding your happiness it's–"
“I didn’t use it to find happiness, not when I knew that he died!” you snapped back at him.
Vion shut his mouth, tears flowed from your eyes as you held back a strangled scream and sob. The pain and the emotion became overwhelming as it consumes you wholly now that there's only you and your brother here.
“I didn’t use it to get him back, to find my happiness somewhere out there,” you answered.
“Then what did you do?”
“To ask, just one question.”

Ever since you met Marc, your life turned upside down but all in the best ways. Sometimes, quite literally too like how you were on his bed with your head dangling off from the edge while his cock slid in and out of your mouth.
With your legs spread open, you could feel the wetness that continued to gush out of your aching cunt. Each heavy drag of Marc’s cock against your tongue and throat made you embarrassingly soaked, especially with the noises that he would make.
“Stick your tongue out, baby…” Marc said breathily after pulling his cock out from your mouth.

Tension was so tight in the air around Jake that you thought if you breathed wrong you're sure that every fiber would snap. It's something you wanted to desperately avoid because you were convinced Jake hated you. His no-nonsense-keep-away-at-arms-length-avoid-eye-contact-at-all-costs method was the icing on the cake to your theory.
Of course you don't know but Jake loves you, he just doesn't know how to show or approach it. Sure, he didn't love you at first, contemplated getting rid of you at all costs but after he saw Steven and Marc look at you with pure love in their eyes; he knew he could do no such thing. Surprisingly, he started falling in love with you through their eyes.

Marc was frustrated, angry, and he made a big mistake by lashing out at you. He only realized what he had just done when tears sprang to your eyes and you put up your hand as you turned around to collect your bag and coat without saying anything.
Fuck.
"Bravo, good job," Jake told him after you left.
The muscles in Marc's jaw tightened, but he mananged to bite back a retort. It was Jake's fault that he was this angry tonight in the first place, it was bold of him to mock him like that.
"Go after her and apologize," Steven suggested.
He was torn. A part of him agreed with Steven and desperately wanted to run after you, begging you to forgive him for being such an inconsiderate idiot, but another part knew you needed to be alone until you calmed down.

Steven stopped beside the aquarium of new Gus and watched the little two-finned goldfish swim around without having to worry about anything at all. He had no idea how lucky he was for that, and how much his owner wished they could switch places for a while. But he had no such luck, the only person he could have done that with was Marc. Well, he did do that with Marc, though that wasn’t always intentional.
He wished he could have a normal and simple life, something he thought he always had until this point. But these days he was beginning to doubt his memories. What could Marc be possibly hiding from him? He knew about becoming Khonshu’s avatar, and he also knew the most important things about his marriage with Layla, but was there more to know?
There was one thing he knew for sure about his own future, though—he wanted you to be a part of it. To ensure this, he had bought a delicate but gorgeous diamond ring, hiding it well in his apartment so you wouldn’t accidentally find it when staying over. Steven wanted to ask you to marry him, he just didn’t know when and how to do it. That, and he wasn’t certain if your feelings for him were strong enough for a question like this.
“What do you think, Gus?” he asked his fish friend as he leaned closer to him. “What would she say?”
Just don’t do it.
He focused on the glass instead of the fish and noticed his reflection’s separate movements. Marc's disapproving look couldn’t intimidate him anymore, it was only annoying these days. “Why shouldn’t I?” Steven asked him curiously.

Sometimes you want to scold yourself for not having the worst of luck but instead never understanding when to say no. Only you would offer to work an extra shift after spending the evening prior donating blood at a drive you were invited to. And Steven didn’t need to comprehend much about health to understand that was a horrendous idea.
“Can you call off? I don’t think they would mind.” he cradled the plates as he stood next to you with your green blanket draped over his head. His dark curls were peaking out as if they were stuffing.
“Hey, turtle boy,” you smiled as you glanced his way. “Could you pass me the plates?” At that gentle request, he was already separating the animal themed children’s plates. The way he and you spent so much time playfully bickering about which creature was the best caused the compulsive buy to have a fixed place in your grocery store receipt.

Your mind, however, was constantly repeating “oh shit.” “What?” You could hear Levi breathe, “What did you just say?”

Angel of Paradis
Pairing: Levi Ackerman x Reader
Warnings: Spoilers from Season 4. Mentions of gun violence, blood, death
A/N: Now I know EP8 is only the beginning of the end but goddamn it hurts!! I love potato girl and losing her just tore me to bits. So here, take this. Its my way of coping I guess..
Levi is pissed off. From the start, he disliked the plan but it wasn't like Eren gave you all much of a choice. So the moment the kid got on the airship, he was welcomed with one of the captain's infamous kicks. The cockpit wall quakes with the impact and Hange sighs, shooting you a look. "I think you need to get out there and make sure Levi doesn't kill Eren, Y/n." She says exasperatedly and you nod, rising from your seat next to Onyankopon.
"I'll be right back." You say and she flashes you a knowing grin, shaking her head slightly. Even the commander knows you're the only one who could reign in the Levi Ackerman.
You see Levi on the corner glaring at Eren as he was being tied up. You sigh heavily, seeing Eren steaming as he heals. Jaw probably unhinged from the captain's kick. You sat beside him on the bench and pulled out a handkerchief, wiping his face clean from dirt and blood.
"Y/n-san." He greets you monotonously and you gave him a kind smile. "Hey, kid." You greet back, tucking loose strands of his now long hair behind his ear.
Your heart aches at the sight. He used to have so much fire, had the same will to fight for humanity that you only ever saw in your mentor, Erwin. Now all you see is ember of pure hatred and cold blooded need for revenge. "I'm glad you're okay." You murmur. Eren's blank stare softens for a second and a small smile hints the corner of his mouth. "Glad to see you too, Lieutenant." He says quietly and out of the corner of your eyes, you see Levi roll his eyes and make a disgruntled sound as he turns around.
You walk up to him and placed a hand on his shoulder. Levi meets your gaze with his dull gray ones for a second and sighs, his expression softening too. At this you smile a little and say, "We still have a long battle to fight ahead of us, Captain. Things might not have gone smoothly, but we won today." You remind him and as if proving your point, right on the other side of the ship you hear the soldiers celebrate as they reunite.
"You're right." He agrees. Levi then takes a deep breath and grabs the hand you placed on his shoulder so he can bring it to his face. He turns his head and placed a chaste kiss on your palm. Your heart flutters at the gesture. It isn't grand but was still something you couldn't quite get used to. You two never declared your love for one another, never really had the luxury of time or chance to do so, but small acts like this was enough to let you know that your presence provided him the calm he sorely needs. And that was all you want. Be his peace in this war.
"I'm going to check if the rest of the squad made it back up." You tell him, grazing your thumb on his lower lip and he reluctantly lets you go. "Be back as soon as you can. Meeting will start as soon as this fucking monkey heals enough." He says, cold glare flashing at the other Jaeger who is a pile of steam still laying on the ground. "Okay, I'll just check on Lima's squad. They're the last ones to be picked up supposedly." Levi nods again and watches you leave before turning to talk to Yelena.
You smile past Floch and the other soldiers who are weeping, hugging and making their tributes for those whom had fallen in battle. You then saw three of the soldiers you've grown close with through the years. They were huddled in the corner, sharing a hug.
You hear Jean say in protest, "Dont hug people with that lump ass iron gear on.", while shrugging off Connie's arm. You chuckle at this and tackled him back to the embrace. "Shut the hell up, Jean. I would take Connie's armored hugs any day!" To which the trio whines out, " Lieutenant Y/l/n!!" when you squished them tight.
Although the new gear designed by Hange was in deed not made for hugging, you four relaxed in the uncomfortable embrace. Grounded by the fact that you all made it safe despite the battle you had just gone through. Connie and Sasha smile up at you while Jean tries to still look annoyed, although the softness in his eyes says otherwise.
The soldiers left below start coming in and the cheering just grows even louder. You didn't have the heart to stop them because you yourself are quite happy that today was a success despite some casualties. Now, you have the War Hammer titan as well and were able to destroy the fleet. Now, the Eldians' chance stands higher against this damn war.
"Did you hear that just now?"
Sasha asks out of the blue and you turn to her in wonder. Honestly you couldn't hear anything but the soldiers celebrating. But out of the lot of you, you know Sasha's sense of hearing is far superior than all of you combined. So you take a step back from the crowd and actually looked around.
"Hey, quiet down!!"Jean yells over the chanting but Floch shouts, "Make some noise! Victory!!!" And was echoed by the rest as they embraced and pumped their fists in the air.
"Hey!" Jean tries again only to be pulled by Connie to the side to ask, "Isn't Lobov-san still out there?"
"No, I think he came aboard." Jean says thoughtfully and this was when something didn't sit quite right with you. Commander Lobov is a man that is hard to miss. And with his dedication to this mission to make up for his years being a useless garrison, he would be amongst the soldiers cheering the loudest for the said victory.
Your instincts has never failed you before and its the very reason why you are so good at your job and able to survive this long. But sometimes, you wish that your instincts aren't always right because you always perceive danger. And right now, every fiber of your being is telling you something is fucking wrong.
That if you were to look out the airship right now, you'll probably see the commander lifeless.
Or worse, an enemy may have made its way up to the ship.
Your blood runs cold for a split second before you acted purely out of instinct. You shove Sasha to the side, dreading as you head for the airship's side door and at the exact moment.. someone aboards.
Your gaze met the kid's muddy brown ones. It was determined, filled with fury and you saw that there isn't any trace of hesitation as her finger pulls the trigger. You knew you didn't stand a chance judging by look on her face and her sure aim on your torso. The word of warning you want to let out was caught in your throat as she fires.
You remember seeing those crazed brown eyes and then the ceiling of the airship the next. The sensation of what can only be compared to fire piercing your skin spreads through your chest and insides like molten metal. You hear the indistinct noise of the soldiers' voices grow louder yet muffled at the same time around you.
From happy cheers to manic, hysterical screaming.
You couldn't catch your breath at first and you aren't sure from which. Was it from falling flat on your back? Or was it the searing pain that made tears leak from your eyes?
And then above the chaos, you hear your three closest comrades call your name in unison.
"Lieutenant Y/n, hey!!!" Connie's frantic voice shrill through the limited space of the ship. "Hang in there, hey!" You feel him rattle you, placing his rough calloused hand against your cheek. Jean's panic stricken face comes to your field of vision and you whimper, "A kid." You gasp. "In the airship."
"Bandages! Now! We need to stop the bleeding!" Jean commands shakily and the rest of the soldiers that aren't capturing the two intruders scramble to get the med kit and the captain.
"Y/n-san, please hold on until we make it to the island!!" Connie pleads but hopelessness crawls his veins as he sees your blood flood the wooden floors.
"Keep him safe." You whisper out to nobody. The captain in mind. Your eye lids grow heavy but you didn't want to close them. No. You can't die. You promised him.
"Don't you dare die on me, Y/l/n." His voice echoes in your mind, compelling you to keep breathing despite how excruciating it feels.
Sasha who was frozen at first, snapped out of her shock as she hears Connie's voice call your name out of sheer panic when your eyes fall close. She then runs to meet the soldier carrying the bandages and was at your side in an instant. With trembling hands, Sasha tries with all her might to wrap you up and stop the bleeding.
"No, no, no, no!!" She starts sobbing while watching the bandage turn red, your gushing blood seeping through no matter how tight she puts the wrap around you. "Y/n-san, no, you can't leave us like this." Sasha hiccups, wiping her tears hastily before grabbing your now cold clammy hand and pressing it to her face. "Please!" She cries, eyes falling close.
If you hadn't pushed her, if you didn't step in her place, it would have been her that got shot. Guilt rakes through her as she watches you desperately fight for your life.
You can feel yourself drifting and you felt helpless. You then meet Sasha's, Jean's and then Connie's gaze, muttering with your remaining strength, "Protect him." And it was no request but an order.
Jean stumbles away, his hands going over his ears, unable to stand your labored breaths and Connie and Sasha's whimpering. Jean felt like hurling when Floch turned the kids to him. The other responsible for you being on the brink of death.
But to those two kids, they are the enemies who wreck havoc to their hometown. Floch wanted to kill them and throw them out but what good would that do? Would taking their lives save yours? And knowing you, who practically treat soldiers like them like your kids even though you were just a few years older than them, you would be disappointed in him at the mere thought of hurting these kids.
Jean can almost hear your angelic voice, "They're just children." You would say. So with a vexed expression and heavy turmoil growing within him, he ties them up and led them to where the captain and commander are.
Jean swallows hard when the captain's cold gaze met his and asks, "Who are these kids?"
By the looks of it, he still does not know.
"They killed Lobov-san and used his gear to come aboard." A lump forms in his throat, suddenly can no longer meet the captain's gaze. "A-and this one here, she.. shot Lieutenant Y/l/n."
Levi's eyes widen. Did he just hear Jean correctly? You? Shot? You were with him just minutes ago. No, how is that possible?-
"Captain, I-I don't think she'll make it." He continues, voice faltering. The grievance in Jean's face make Levi's blood run cold. He stumbles forward a bit as Armin and Mikasa run past him but he seemed frozen in his tracks.
No.
You got hurt but you'll pull through this. You always have. You promised him. And you are one of the toughest people he knows.
Levi tries to convince himself as he glared back at Zeke. He tries to distract himself from the cold fear of losing you with the blinding rage he feels for the Beast Titan wielder. But then, the door swings open again and Levi felt something terribly wrong right away.
And when Connie appears with tears sliding down his face and says,
"Y/n-san.. is dead."
Levi's entire world shifts.
Everyone was shellshocked for a moment. Because how could you be gone just like that? When you were just with them just minutes ago providing comfort to all of them? Passing by and giving them a wave of peace and calmness like the angel that you are.
Hange wobbles, her knees growing weak and its as if someone had punched her in the chest. The pain reminiscent as the day she watched Moblit vanish before her eyes. You were her right hand woman. Her confidant.
Eren's head hung in disbelief. His mind clouded by your kind smile just earlier and telling him you're actually glad to see him. Him. The monster who had just devastated a whole town and killed probably thousands of people. He thought that by now, he'd have gotten used to losing the people around him but losing you is gutting him. Its was like losing family. A sister.
"Connie.. did Y/n-san have any last words?" He asks mindlessly, wanting to know what your last thoughts were. Connie blinks through his tears and his eyes drifts to the captain, whose face was undreadable and knuckles threatening to split open at how tightly his balled fists are clenched.
"She said.. 'Protect him.'" Connie mutters and Levi's facade breaks.
The mob of weeping soldiers parted as the captain staggers to the back of the ship where you lay. Armin and Mikasa were still curled up beside you, their faces red and puffy from wailing. Both of them reluctantly stood up and stepped away as he walks closer. His gaze was still trained on the ground as he puts one foot in front of the other.
He shudders and stop midstep as his foot steps on the crimson stained wood. Before he knows it, he falls on his knees with a thud. Your pale hand comes into his field of vision and he takes a deep shakey breath as he reaches for it. His eyes darts everywhere but your face. The bandage on your middle, the boots on your feet that he had his fair share of shinning as his token of appreciation for you making his morning teas, the emblem of the Wings of Freedom embedded on your breast plate.
Your hand felt cold and stiff against his. A stark contast of the warmth it exuded on his cheek just moments ago.
"Y/n?" He croaks.
Suddenly his breathing shallows as the deafening silence stretches on. He can still smell you but can no longer feel you although you're right fucking there. Levi wanted this to some fucked up nightmare. But then, as he steels his nerves and finally looked at your face, his heart shatters.
Your hair is uncharacteristically dishevelled, e/c eyes lifeless, pupils middilated and your mouth parted ever so slightly.
Levi pulls you in his arms frantically, plethora of would have been and should have been anchoring his heart into a sea of regret.
He should have never let you out the damn door.
He should have held you tighter.
He should have you talked to you longer.
He should have told you.. he loves you.
He never even got to tell you.
Levi's face crumples, face reddening before a resentful yell erupts from him. The soldiers wince at the sound. It was pure agony and it pierces through each and everyone of them, bringing the lot of them back to tears if they ever stopped in the first place.
The entire flight back to Paradis, Levi held you the way he wished he did while you were still with him.
Ma'am chill
