“I–”
Touko found, very quickly, that she wasn’t even able to answer the question. She was dumbfounded, and for a few precious moments, that surprise held back any actual feelings she might have had about the situation.
But, when the shock melted away, all of her emotions hit her hard and fast. “I…” She was shaken–shaking, and she didn’t know if the tears that she insisted on hiding with her hands were out of sadness, frustration, sentimentality, or gratitude.
She knew that she hated this, though. That she couldn’t just… accept the gift. That she had to crumble in front of him, squeaking through her palms and unable to so much as thank him.
What had she done to deserve this, really? To deserve his kindness, for one, but also… to deserve being so ceaselessly miserable about everything?
Her reaction doesn’t surprise him all that much. Gingerly, he sets the boat he had been holding down, and moves to place a hand on her shoulder. The warm smile that she had surely grown to expect from him filled his features, before he moves in to try and hug her once more.
“You don’t need to say anything, and... I’m sorry if all of this isn’t what you want... I just thought... It would be nice. I thought it might end up... helping you. If you don’t want to do it... It’s alright...” He didn’t want to just go, not after all of the planning that he had gone through, the social interaction, and reaching out he had managed to do, but if it was what she ended up wanting, then he would go along with it.
