The idea of it was completely believable. “Has nobody explained that he can’t freeze to death?” she asked, raising an eyebrow as they walked. “Because someone ought to.”

"I’ve tried, Mama’s tried everyone has tried but he’s still convinced." Rudy rolled his eyes as they came to the river. "Come on let’s go swimming!"

Seeing the river, she couldn't believe how beautiful a dirty old flood of water could seem after so many years. A huge grin fell onto her face as she ran towards it. "Come on, Saukerl!"

It was 6 am when Rudy was banging on the door of the Hubermann house, he was white as a sheet and still dressed for bed. "Liesel, is you Mama here?" He asked quickly.

Opening the door sleepily, she sent him a glare. “What do you want?” It was stupid, but if Rudy needed to talk to Rosa, she wouldn’t get in the way. “Mama!”

"But.." It wasn’t fair, and she wanted to stomp her feet and have a tantrum like a child. The Steiners were part of her family as much as her mother and father. "What if they all have to go? What then?"

“Then they go and you stay here.” Rosa sighed, the Steiner children filed into the room.

“Frau Hubermann we’re going to Australia!” Anna-Maria giggled from her perch on Kurt’s shoulders, Kurt whispered something to her. “Oh to Austria!”

Liesel flinched then, suddenly feeling rather ill. Her face paled as she glanced at Rudy. "To Austria?"

Rudy frowned, it was strange to hear her talk like that, like she’d been alive for so long but was only 13 in death. “Well Tommy Muller and I go all the time, sometimes Heinz will come with us but it’s not very fun because Tommy thinks he’s going to freeze to death if he swims for longer then 10 minutes which isn’t even possible.” He rolled his eyes.

“Liesel, sometimes that is the only way. The little ones may want to stay with their Mama or they may want to go with there brothers and sister it’s up to them. You’re a big girl now you can understand these things.” She sighed not scolding her so much as trying to explain.”

Liesel winced, but she could see that he was happy about it. She was quite glad that Rudy hadn’t had to feel the pain of having everyone else die while he stayed alive. “And now I’m here, that really is everyone.”

Rudy grimaced. “Well that means Viktor Chemmel is here to and he’s still an asshole. You think Death would change him…” Rudy seemed oblivious to Liesel’s discomfort with him being so comfortable talking about this. “Come on lets go swimming!”

Liesel managed a small laugh, before looking down at herself again. She was wearing one of her old dresses, and she'd never been happier to see it. "I haven't been swimming in years, you know. Especially not the Amper."

Liesel felt her heart thudding and her stomach drop. This was either going to be the best or worst news she’d heard. “Yes, Mama?”

“Frau Steiner has decided to send them to live with their grandparents in Austria.” Rosa sighed looking at her daughter. “But she’s worried about Rudy, he and the little ones have never met their grandparents. I’m going to ask them if they want to go, If Heinz and Anna-Maria don’t we’ll be taking them in, but if they want to go and Rudy doesn’t he can stay Ja?”

"No, Mama!" she cried out before she could stop herself. "Mama, you can't do that! You can't split them up. The smaller ones will want to stay with Rudy."

"You’re disgusting," she sighed, but couldn’t help a laugh. He hadn’t changed at all. "What else is there? I tried not to, but.. I’ve forgotten so much."

Rudy grinned proudly. “Well my Papa’s shop came when he did a while ago and the Burgermeisters house is here now, pretty much all of Molching is cause everyone is dead!” He’d never been so happy to be dead in his after life.

Ah, Stuttgart... There was something he'd been hoping to put off mentioning.  Oh, he had gone back - in fact, it had been the first place he'd gone after the liberation of Dachau - but it hadn't been with particularly high hopes, and as it turned out, he was right.

"Not there.  Possibly elsewhere, or..." Dead.

"Don't worry," she nodded, seeing the look in his eyes. It was obvious he didn't want to talk about it, and Liesel didn't want to force him. Not yet. "You don't have to tell me anything."

this turned out much longer than I thought it would…

If you’d asked Max that morning how exactly he’d be spending the day, he would have said something about finishing yesterday’s crossword and maybe going to the pub for a drink in the evening.  He wouldn’t have said anything about looking after Ada from next door, but then, he hadn’t expected his neighbour to knock on his door holding the small child that morning. 

"Could you?" she’d asked, anxious eyes flitting from him to her house to the four-year-old in her arms.  "Just for a few hours?  My sister’s arriving this afternoon and I forgot and everything’s a mess, and Karl’s working…"

That had been forty-five minutes ago.  And it wasn’t that he minded children, but he’d never had to single-handedly look after one before, either.  Even living with his cousins, he’d never usually been in the house long enough to help out with the younger ones, and when he was, his mother had done most of it. 

Despite that one obstacle, he felt he was coping alright, except that as he’d never actually had a child, there was nothing for Ada to do except sit and stare about silently.  Which was why, after close to fifty minutes of this, he’d held out a hand - “Kommst, Ada?” - and left, the girl attached to his hand. 

At the time, he hadn’t any real idea of where they were going, but quickly established it was too cold to actually stay outside.  It was certainly too early to take her back to Frau Krause.  Liesel, he thought, she lived a couple of streets away, didn’t she?  And not that Ada wasn’t generally well-behaved, but he wouldn’t mind some company that wasn’t four years old, even for half an hour.  That decided, he turned and started walking, finding himself outside the house five minutes later.

He raised his free hand and knocked. “Um, Liesel?”

"I can imagine that," Liesel laughed, picturing Max with a tiny child, teaching them the rights and wrongs of fist fighting. "I think they’d learn pretty well from the expert. I’m surprised you never taught me how to."

"I could teach you how, if you wanted," he offered. "You never asked.  But possibly when Ada’s gone home."  As much as he generally got on with his neighbours, Frau Krause had enough to deal with without her smallest child being out fighting with other children on the street.

"You could?" She suddenly grinned, her brown eyes lighting up. As a kid, nobody had ever taught her how, so now, as almost as adult, it sounded even more fun. "That'd be great! Thanks, Max."

Harley gave her a small smile. “If only, kid. If only.” she said with a sigh. “See, the only reason I got myself in this mess is to be with somebody and I’m not gonna leave ‘im.”

"But aren't you unhappy? Surely he'd understand?" Raising an eyebrow, it all seemed rather simple to her. "If.. If he loved you.."

"Good luck," she smiled, truly hoping it all went well for him. She wanted Frau Steiner to be okay, for many different reasons. "Why don’t you take her something?"

Rudy shrugged. “I mostly just want to see her…” An hour later Rosa took the children over to see  there mother, leaving them in the care of Kurt she came back to Liesel.

“Liesel, we need to have a talk…” She sounded sad and worried. “About Rudy and his brothers and sisters.”

Liesel felt her heart thudding and her stomach drop. This was either going to be the best or worst news she'd heard. "Yes, Mama?"

"The Amper? It’s still there?" Of course it was still there. Nothing had changed. It was hard for Liesel to comprehend, but hearing the words, there was a certain happiness.

"Yes it’s still there!" Rudy smiled. "Come on I’ll show you! I’ve even been skinny dipping in it." He excalimed proudly, that had been something he’d always wanted to do.

17:Friendly hug.

With a soft smile at the man, Liesel couldn’t help but hug him. He’d been a friend to her, despite the fact she’d been more than terrified of his dog. It was strange, almost as though she was hugging the enemy, but Liesel knew that she wouldn’t come to any harm around him.

"Does your family live near here?" she asked, looking around at the almost empty town, with a thin layer of snow gently falling around them. Typical German winter. "Where is your dog right now?"

"My family lives a bit outside of town, I stopped here for a short break," He stated, looking up at the sky, he was fond of snow, but not of the cold. He enjoyed the season either way though, the good feelings it typically brought, even in rough times, "Schatz is with a friend of mine at the moment. I’ll be picking her up again before I go to my family."

"Well, it's good they don't live too far away, isn't it? Although it must be better there than living here, I suppose." It wasn't that Liesel despised Molching. She quite liked it sometimes. But it had it's downsides. "Is she as big as I remember?"
