when the word ‘autism’ is so nebulous that you don’t know what to tell disability services at your university, because you’re literally only dealing with problems as they come up, because you’re thankfully used to really flexible people, and already take classes online, so no need for classroom accommodations... and having your ‘accommodation’ be ‘everything’ is probably not an option.

Hey, I have an odd request.

My brother is autistic and loveees this specific penguin. Unfortunately we lost him whilst on vacation a few months ago. The hotel said he was probably taken away by the people who wash the bed sheets.

I would like to find an exact replica of this penguin for my brother. We bought him at the Hogle Zoo in Utah many years ago and they no longer are selling this item.

How to call your reps when you have social anxiety

When you struggle with your mental health on a daily basis, it can be hard to take action on the things that matter most to you. The mental barriers anxiety creates often appear insurmountable. But sometimes, when you really need to, you can break those barriers down. This week, with encouragement from some great people on the internet, I pushed against my anxiety and made some calls to members of our government. Here’s a comic about how you can do that, too. (Resources and transcript below.)

Emily Ellsworth explains why calling is the most effective way to reach your congressperson.

Sharon Wong posted a great series of tweets that helped me manage my phone anxiety and make some calls.

Kelsey is tweeting pretty much daily with advice and reminders about calling representatives. I found this tweet an especially great reminder that calls aren’t nearly as big a deal as anxiety makes them out to be.

thinking thoughts that aren’t salient I’d trade in all my bits of Internet to learn to think straight again.

over and over again cause I may have nothing good to say on my deathbed where I’m talking, but can never tell what about after all the dumb puns have fizzled out and laughing is no more than a polite reflex the doctors being the ones to ask what’s wrong with your frontal cortex?

so we used our brains as pots for pleasantries in which the only answer to “How are you?” is “Life’s looking up! What’s up with you lately?" we have absolved ourselves of caring but, coincidentally, we’ve also obscured our meaning.

from a bed in bruxelles I am taking care of myself with a bulgarian friend (translating a story on the emotionally abusive dating culture from Bulgarian to me, but indeed that is not quite poetic. maybe anything can be poetic. I digress.)

collective tindering gives some laughs (he is doing the tindering, I am doing the collective) maybe I have friends after all maybe I shouldn’t take the fall off the balcony (unless it’s for investigating; it’s only two storeys)

it’s not about the homework or the german not even the cultural immersion over time, poetry muscles atrophy but i’ve got a bit of adventure in my eyes and—

oh god, get it out!

it’s about balance. it’s all about balance. (and cheering when plugs work!) for the euphoric feeling of clipping your rope into the wall right after you thought you’d slip and fall and your partner tugs you in but sometimes you flip... (but you’re okay! somehow.)

there are mountains outside bigger than my face! and I, too, am outside-- well, shit. it's wet. and that lightning just struck again.

they say it never strikes the same place twice. hopefully it won't hit my head. railay must be the luckiest beach in the world because that has been strike ten for the seabed and now I'm getting poured on again.
