Venezuela’s shield-bearing protesters

Venezuelan protesters blocked streets on Saturday, July 29, in a last-ditch effort to derail the election of a legislative superbody that opponents of President Nicolas Maduro say will give the Socialist leader a stranglehold on power.

The oil-rich but recession-racked country has been gripped by four months of protests against Maduro that have left more than 110 dead in confrontations against security forces, who have responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons.

Ahead of Sunday’s election, here’s a look at Venezuela’s young protesters, who, drawing inspiration from Ukraine’s 2013-14 revolt, don Viking-like shields in battles with security. (Reuters)

With the journalists on the frontline in Iraq - FRANCE 24 (10/11/2016)

Journalists embedded with the Iraqi army on the frontline battling the Islamic State group risk their lives every day to report on this must-crucial of wars. FRANCE 24’s team on the ground took a step back to look at these “information warriors”.

In Iraq, the fight against the Islamic State (IS) group is not just being fought on the ground; it is also an information war. While terrorists flood social networks with propaganda videos and photos, around 1,500 Iraqi war correspondents are currently covering the progress of the regular army and militias fighting their way to the terrorist group’s stronghold of Mosul. These “information warriors” are side-by-side with the soldiers.

The Iraqi journalists show incredible courage by filming the fighting up close and risking their own lives. Not all of them survive to file their reports for the next news bulletin. Proud of their country, they play an important role in the battle against the IS group and often appeal to God to win the “holy war against evil”.

Suicide bombing at Pakistan shrine

A brutal attack on a beloved Sufi shrine that killed 88 people raised fears that the Islamic State group has become emboldened in Pakistan, aided by an army of homegrown militants benefiting from hideouts in neighboring Afghanistan, analysts and officials said Friday.

Pakistani security forces have carried out sweeping country-wide raids following Thursday’s bombing of the shrine in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province that also wounded 343 people. The military’s public relations wing reported on its official twitter account that more than 100 suspected ‘terrorists” were killed in the raids, while government officials lashed out at Kabul accusing the Afghan government of ignoring earlier pleas to crackdown on militant hideouts.
