The Gray Man (2022): “Good news is he missed the liver and the kidney.”
Nigma had left the door locked with its standard deadbolt but had purposively not engaged the extra smart-tech locks and security system to his house. Well, this wasn't his main home. His penthouse wasn't an address he allowed being located as easily as this medium sized house in the Gotham suburbs. The super nosey and on top of it neighborhood watch and expensive security at the front gate He didn't want to make it too easy for his fellow displaced countryman but he always wasn't looking to watch him struggle with his own security system coding. Edward wasn't looking at Moran for his coding abilities or lack thereof. His interest in the man laid elsewhere.
The sniper was right on schedule of when Edward calculated he'd arrive. Of course he'd still act like he'd been waiting longer than he'd actually. "About time you showed up," he teased playfully despite the knife being held to his throat from behind. Edward simply tilted his head backwards to look back up at the man, while also subtly protecting his carotid more should he have miscalculated Moran's patience.
"Before you get mad at the riddles it took to actually get what you're after, I wasn't lying about the item you seek. It's on the table, wrapped in that green silk over there," he gestured with his hand carefully. "Check it out and then let's talk."
@thesecondmost
This whole place was a nightmare and a nuisance and the sniper had determined that just amount the moment he'd set foot in the city. Fucking Gotham. Home of the eccentric and annoying.
Moran had never seen the point of wasting time over contemplating what was potentially karmic punishment for his ill deeds, but this had given him pause and his mind had briefly considered the possibility. Was this everything finally catching up to him? Was this his waking hell in return to what he'd spent his life doing? Had he been damned to colorful villain monologues and tacky, skin-tight costumes?
Oh, Moriarty had been bad. Moriarty had been evil in that cartoonish way you read about in books or saw in movies, but it was still arguably a believable sort eccentric. What he'd seen so far here was a whole other breed and it was driving the gunman up the wall.
His grip held steady the blade, cool steel pressed threatening against smooth skin-—
About time he showed up? That's all Moran needed to know he'd been expected the whole time. Here he'd been stealthing around like a fool. He had not caught Nigma unaware, Nigma had LET him put the knife to his throat. Shit. Like a tiger whose prey had somehow gone rotten in its jaws, he withdrew the knife with an audible scoff and shoved the man away.
His gaze flickered to the table but he did not move at first. A pregnant pause of holding his ground and then he was sheathing the blade and trudging over to the table, calloused fingers smoothing over the wrapping.
❝ The fancy wrapping doesn't make up for the Sphynx riddle bullshit. ❞ because an educated man he was, but a patient one he was not. He didn't enjoy games of the mind, battles of wit. He was a man who preferred physicality. Leave the wits and the speeches to the men and women who hired him to do the dirty work they felt beneath them.
Fingers find their way to their prize and his gaze narrows, hands tracing over the front and over the title. Had he EVER mentioned anything about the book? Was this a bribe or an intimidation tactic?
He exhaled a tired sigh. Did he even want to ask how the other had known? ❝ OK. ❞ resigned in that sort of way that was expected from a hardened military man who had sunken into the underbelly of high collar crime. ❝ Fine, let's talk. ❞

when canon gives you an underdeveloped character and you just have to make do:
@unphantasmal ASKED: ❝ people will get what they paid for, and you paid for the best. ❞
Both brows raise briefly and at first that seemed like the only reaction that would be roused from the hired gun. Moran was used to people trying to get a rise out of him, a reaction of any sorts. It came with the trade and it certaintly came with the reputation that preceded him. He raised the unlit cigarette to his lips, dug out an intricate lighter from one of his pockets, and lit it without much ceremony.
It wasn’t until after he’d taken a drag and let the smoke plume about him did he tilt his head and regard the other. ❝ Got no clue who you are but if you’re talking literally, wasn’t me. I don’t do the hiring and I don’t do the paying. Just the babysitting afterwards. ❞ there was an annoyed edge to his tone to indicate this wouldn’t be the first time Jim had decided to hire someone for one reason or another and provide no communication whatsoever to Sebastian. You work with a manic genius and that sort of shit just happened; you got used to it.
That was if this was even that sort of situation. ❝ Or we talking philosophy? Or you threatening me? Lot of ways this could be taken. Need you to be a bit more specific. ❞

rawdealed:
“Walking away…” The words slip him into another state of mind. Truth be told, he’d considered it more than once. Still, there was no way out of his situation that didn’t involve another man’s decision or a casket, no matter how many atrocities he had to commit to gain the trust of the men his superiors hunted or what lasting marks those left.
The bottle almost slips off his hand before Rust snaps out of it, fingers tightening at the crook of its neck. “You’re right, but that’s the story for half of the guys in this place.” Both eyebrows raise at his own remark, taking the last sip of an otherwise empty bottle. “Is it yours?”
His fingers itched for a smoke but he resolved to merely reach for his whiskey again, hand gripping the glass firmly as the stranger seemed to nearly loosen his own. Moran was a man of the hunt and a hunter took notice of reactions, of tones, anything they could to land their mark-—but at the end of the day, they didn’t care about the WHY.
Whatever the man was going through was neither Moran’s business nor his concern.
Half the guys? The sniper glanced over his shoulder briefly and made a small hum of acknowledgement. When he turned back, it was with a certain muted jovialness. It was the sort of dangerous amusement you expected to come alongside a jagged grin-—but nothing greeted Rust but Moran’s plain, comfortable expression. ❝ I walked in. Why would I want to walk away? ❞
His story wasn’t unique. Plenty of vile individuals that did all sorts of vile things for one motive or another. ❝ Let’s say you get to walk away tomorrow, no strings attached. How exactly do you think that’d go? How do you think it’d go for any of the guys here? ❞ he lifted his glass to give the man a beat or two to think on it.
❝ ‘Cuz if you ask me, I don’t think it’d go very fucking well. ❞

❛ people like us don’t get to decide when we’re done. ❜ — @thesecondmost
Sebastian’s words cut through the air like a razor and make Rust flinch, unmistakably absentminded. The nights that he’s free from the duties he never wished to perform he spends at low-end bars, switching narcotics for booze but never once succeeding at quitting, head pounding and nerves sizzling.
Lone Star beer gets swallowed and his eyebrows raise, curious as to where the conversation would lead. “People like us? What the fuck d’you think you know about me?”
Moran swallowed the cutting reply as easily as he did the sip from his glass, his gaze unwavering from the point of raising it to his lips to sitting it back down again. It wasn’t so much challenging in nature as it was just…observant. Everything about the way he conducted himself screamed hunter; he was someone that couldn’t help but drink in every possible detail he could from an encounter. Truly, he had garnered his Tiger moniker for reasons beyond simply killing one.
Truth be told, he didn’t know much about the man and didn’t care to either. Truth be told, his ego boasted inwardly that he was probably BETTER. But, he could justify the notion that even if they weren’t from the same apple tree, they were sure as hell at least in the same orchard.
It was with a biting confidence he straightened and regarded the other, head cocked just a tinge to the side. ❝ No one with the means to just walk away ends up in a shithole like this. Don’t have to know anything about you to know that. ❞
Ryan Gosling in The Gray Man (2022) dir. Anthony Russo, Joe Russo
