One semester of work
Dark perspectives
Third review (2 weeks before studio lock-up)
Displaced theatres - from bi-planar to mono-planar performance spaces
deconstruction sequence as derived from programmatic displacement
Juxtaposition of theatre kit of parts to standard propping grid
Architecture is temporary: record of demolition and building in Wan Chai, Hong Kong
series of plan, of full deconstruction sequence
illustration of choreographed deconstruction
model: placement of temporary construction modules
Tentative model for 2nd review?
I came up with this strange idea of using Lego blocks to represent the temporary construction in my model. It is because my preliminary idea of temporary construction is modular in nature. And since I have not started designing the distribution of them yet, I'll be easier to assemble Lego blocks than making up a definite form with other materials.
sketch design methodology #2
To even go further simpler with the geometry and sequence, a second scheme is developed. The objective is still to formulate a variety of spaces with simple and direct cuts, so that the temporary construction for activities can respond differentially.
In the Sunbeam Theatre, there's a thick gap (as indicated in blue) between the "theatres block" and the "shop block".
Dividing the building in 3 portions, 3 vertical cuts are made from the facades to the gap, so that the "theatres block" and the "shop block" start to engage with one another.
Then this vertical demolition is expanded to form different width of opening through this gap, yielding a series of programmatic opportunities.
sketch design methodology #1
Previously, the recursive void unit proves complicated to be resolved in sequence, due to its irregular geometry and loose spatial definition.
These few days I have devoted to simplifying the removal geometry and order. Here is the 1st attempt. The objective is to formulate a variety of spaces with simple and direct cuts through the building, so that the temporary construction for activities can respond differentially.
2 vertical cuts (3m wide, front division ratio 1:1, side division ratio 3:2) are made to divide the building into 4 separate structures, made possible with bracing and other temporary supporting structures. The constraints are made so that each portion has a share of the theatres.
(notes: the temporary construction should also be considered to bridge these 4 blocks)
By applying different deconstruction actions (as altered from conventional techniques), distinct characteristics of spaces are created in each block throughout the processes. This opens up various opportunity for the modules of temporary construction to occupy.
These 4 blocks can be considered to unfold 4 different narratives on the displacement of performance space.
