Holly stared at him as he spoke, eyes wide, as if she could not quite believe what he was saying. I sounded very much like things her Pa had always said. How there’s too much bad in the world, and if we want there to be more good, we have to work to put it out there. You have make it. It was how they had lived on the ranch, as best as they could. Drifters were welcome, so long as they didn’t make trouble. If someone needs something, and you have it to spare, you give it. It had been a good thing. Until Denny and Virgil had come along.
They had taken the goodness, the generosity, and thrown in back in their faces. They took the kindness that had been given to them, and turned it to death. Pa had tried to give them a fresh start, and they thanked him with a bullet to the head. And for what? Caps.
Tears spilled from Holly’s eyes, and she turned her head away from him. It was bad enough that this was how they were meeting – her beaten to a pulp, and sprawled out on the freezing ground like a idiot – he did not need to see her weeping. Slowly, and clumsily, she tried to push herself up, hands sliding in the snow and ice but after a moment she managed to at least sit up.
She sniffed – or tried to anyway, with her nose still swollen it didn’t work that well – and wiped at her eyes with the back of her hand. When she finally spoke, her voice wavered slightly, as if she was fighting to hold back a sob, “Would….-would you help me up? Please?”
His brows furrowed as she turned her head away from him. Perhaps he had misspoke, or dredged up some less-than-pleasant memories. If her appearance was anything to go off of, she clearly hadn’t led the easiest of lives. Not that many in the Wastes did.
At her question, Emil pushed himself to his feet, rubbing his hands on his pants legs to dry and warm them before he reached down to grab her hand and help hoist her to her feet. Once she was stable, he let go, and while his instincts told him to place a steadying hand on her back, he thought better of it, and instead let his hand hover behind her in case she stumbled.
“Some place you’re heading? I can walk with you, if you won’t mind my company for a few more minutes,” he offered alongside a soft smile, before adding, “Wouldn’t feel right letting you wander off alone after how I found you anyway.”
