I asked my friends what they thought of when they saw purple. Some said flowers, some said childhood, some said happiness. All said that to them, purple represented new beginnings. (The start of a friendship, the start of a marriage, the start of a life)

For me, all purple means is a life cut far too short. It means friends that should’ve been lifelong. It means forever unfinished to-do lists. (I’ll never teach them to ice skate next time the river freezes)

Maybe someday the grief will start to fade. Maybe someday I’ll look at the color purple and be able to see anything but heartbreak. See anything but lost dreams. See anything but a child crying for a father who will never come home. (He’s gone as well now- I hope he’s at least warmer wherever he is)

For now though, purple is loss. Purple is hand dug graves with only one visitor. Purple is grief, for them and for all they represented. Purple is endings. (Purple is a dead husband and a dead best friend. Purple is everything and purple is nothing. Purple is them and purple is me)
