“A three-quarter-length portrait to left showing Ball in rear-admiral's full-dress uniform, 1795-1812. He is depicted wearing cuffs and buttons that are incorrect for a rear-admiral of this period. Ball commanded the 'Alexander', 74 guns, under Nelson in the Mediterranean, whose flagship he saved from being wrecked in a storm. After participating in the Battle of the Nile, 1798, he was engaged in the blockade of Malta and became the civil commissioner and thus in effect the governor there, when it surrendered in 1801. He wears the Nile medal. His left arm cradles a telescope and he is leaning against a cannon while his right hand holds the lower end of the telescope. The harbour visible in the background to the left is probably Valletta.” (RMG)

“A half-length portrait slightly to right in a blue coat edged with gold lace, and with a gold-laced mariner's cuffs and a red waistcoat, also laced, and a grey tie-wig. Osborn's right hand rests on a box compass, while his left hand lacks cuffs and appears unfinished as does the background of sea, which has no shipping. The portrait was probably painted on board his ship 'Princess Caroline', 80 guns, in Hyères Bay, when the fleet was blockading Toulon. At the ensuing but indecisive Battle of Toulon in 1744, Osborn commanded the 'Princess Caroline' in the main division, and nobly supported Captain William Rowley. The fact that the fleet left after the action probably explains why Arnulphy was unable to finish this picture. In 1758, commqnding a squadron blockading Cartagena, he intercepted the French 80-gun 'Foudroyant' and the 'Oriflamme' , 50, dispatching ships in pursuit which captured the former and destroyed the latter. Shortly afterwards he suffered a stroke which foced him to give up command, though he rose to become Admiral of the White and was appointed Vice-Admiral of England in 1763. John Charnock's 'Biographia Navalis' (1797) gives an unflattering portrait of Osborn as a rather dour character, not supported by other sources. He was perhaps idiosyncratic but reliable, humane, liked by his followers and described by Augustus Hervey as a 'worthy good man'.” (RMG)

“A midshipman at the helm of a small naval vessel in the 1790s, showing the double wheel then in use on many ships (for bad-weather control by up to four men) the binnacle lower right and a log-line on a reel set in the taffrail behind, to the left of the port boat davit. The box arrangement behind the cabin skylight may be a chicken coop. The caption ('Nothing off Boy, Luff') refers to the tendency of the vessel to fall away from the wind, requiring some exertion by the helmsman to luff-up in order to hold the required compass course. The binnacle is of the type holding two compasses with a lamp between them for night-time illumination, as shown by the small central heat-grill on top above the lamp.” (RMG)
