I need to release
I'm currently on a roll out bed laying next to my dad in the ICU. He's sleeping soundly surrounded by blankets and pillows. Somehow through all of the humming of the medical equipment. It's quiet now. The nurses have done their rounds and we won't see them for another couple of hours. It's just him and I now. Mom needed a break and my brother has been dealing with so much while he waited for the rest of us to drive/fly there. I'm exhausted as well, getting hardly any sleep the night before. But my sister is in no position to be staying the night to watch over Dad. I understand that. I've never known anyone on a personal level who has suffered a stroke. Getting that phone call sent me into a frenzy of emotions. Fear, anger, sadness, panic just to name a few. We were already trying to understand his dementia, but now this? Why? Why him? I didn't know how I would react when I saw him. Would his face be too different? Would he know who I was? All of this subsided when I saw him. He was still my adorable Dad. Smiling a half smile and saying the sweetest, "Hey." Even though he could only muster a few words, it was him. In his eyes and smile, it was him. What he can't say with words, he says with his touch. He reached out and touched my face today. Just staring and holding me. Letting me know that he knew it was me. He's trying so hard. I've been trying to hold my composure in front of my family. He shocked us all when he turned to my mom and mumbled, "Potts, are you ok?" I broke down in tears. This man has lost the left side of his entire body and still his thoughts were on my mom and her well-being. He's going to fight through this and make it. He's already overcome dire odds and surprises is every hour. Daddy, you're so strong. You'll get through this and we will all be here with you. I love that you still snore just as loud and laugh just as hard as you normally would. Goodnight. I love you. See you in the morning.

😦😧😯🤤
Would things have changed if I could’ve stayed? Would you have loved me either way? Dressed to the blues. Day to day with my collar up. If it was up to me I would’ve figured you out Way before the year clocked out.
