When I was briefly a guest of Marussia in the paddock last year, a guy who took care of me spotted Jules in the motorhome and said ‘let’s say hello’. I didn’t want to, as I felt I was bothering him, especially that it was some 2 hours before the race and also because he was talking to one of the team members. I didn’t have much choice though and while I expected him to shake my hand and get back to his conversation, Jules stood up from his seat, introduced himself, wished me happy birthday (it was my 20th bday) and then I was told to wait a second when the guy who was my ‘guide’ went to bring me a little present. I fully expected Jules to go but he waited with me for around 5 minutes and asked me about my studies, how I got into the paddock, stuff like that. He was super nice, even though it was obivous he would never meet me again so why would he care about my life. When the guy with a present finally got back I wished Jules good luck and a better race then his previous one (where his car rolled down the track). He signed a cap for me (which now lies on my desk to remind me he’s fighting), smiled and said ‘see you again!’
