VIBRATO (1997)
CASE NUMBER X-8734SOC
When a young opera singer dies mid-performance—her final high note shattering every light in the house—Mulder and Scully are called to investigate. Authorities insist it was a tragic accident, but the autopsy tells a different story: internal trauma consistent with exposure to an intense sonic force. Suspicion falls on her former vocal coach, a legendary maestro with a reputation for creating starlets overnight. While Scully and Skinner pose as elite patrons to mingle with the company’s powerful inner circle, Mulder chases a darker thread: sightings of a black-gloved figure slipping backstage moments before the fatal note. Plagued by phantom tones and piercing echoes no one else seems to hear, he becomes convinced the killer possesses the unnatural ability to manipulate sound waves.
