My partner's friend's little sister is a therian, and whenever their friend has had a concern or question, they've come to me, which I deeply appreciate. I don't really know much about this kid other than she's a wolf and a tween and she's been brave enough to tell her whole family about therianthropy.

Today, at the local pride parade, there were a couple therian kids (I assume, with the masks and tails) running around, and I got to thinking about the little sister. Turns out her parents are considering enrolling her in a special ed class at a Waldorf school, where about half the students are therians and the teachers are supportive of therianthropy.

We live in a time where there are therian classrooms with supportive teachers. I broke down crying in the middle of the parade when my partner told me. Fuck dude, I'm tearing up all over again writing this. There are therian kids growing up right now, being open about their therianthropy and meeting support and acceptance from teachers and peers and parents and siblings, and being in a class surrounded by half a dozen other therians of their own age.

I never could've even imagined something like this when I was a 13 year old baby therian.

hhmmmhnhbm. can someone else who gets phantom limbs please explain exactly how they get it? like do you guys COMPLETELY feel them all the time? I’m kinda new to this but whenever walking around I keep having the sensation of my tail behind me but. more mentally than actually feeling it? it’s like I know it’s there but I can’t completely feel it. then usually when sitting it’s just. gone. (to be fair, if I had my tail while sitting it would be crushed and very uncomfortable… that thing is like my whole physical body weight/length.)

Hey there! Nonhuman phantom limbs are different for everyone - my limbs aren't the same as yours! - but I can say that your experience is very common. It's normal to have phantom limbs that waver in intensity and disappear on you. Having them 24/7 or feeling them as strongly as a solid body part are in no way required. You feel the concept of a tail sometimes? Congrats, that's still a phantom tail!

As someone who doesn't get phantom limbs by default, but can choose to conjure them up - think of phantom shifts like your mind's best guess of where your body parts are.

Your tail isn't physically attached to your spine, not in the way that your legs are attached to your hips, so your brain doesn't have the same amount of practice with knowing where it is. It's had many years of knowing exactly where your legs are in space from seeing, touching and moving with them - it's had far less time to figure out where your tail is, and knowing exactly where it is gets harder when you can't directly see, touch, or move with it!

If you want to make it feel more present, that is a skill you can improve! In my experience, it's a lot like a body scan meditation - you're bringing your attention to a part of your body and increasing your awareness of it.

I can't physically sense my wings to give my mind an anchor, so I practice picturing them attached to me in my mind's eye, in as much detail and as many senses as I want. I focus on how my feathers may look as they glide over each other, how they'd feel brushing up against my skin, the weight of them, the sense of where my wings are in space in relation to the rest of my body, the soft sound of my feathers ruffling, my own familiar scent. Focusing on it can help my brain feel its presence easier, and the practicing builds on itself over time.

Seconding what raptorish said! What you're describing is a very typical phantom limb experience, the sensations are generally felt more in someone's mind since they aren't coming from a physical body part, and limbs sort of disappearing when they're in conflict with an object is common :)

As someone who has phantom limbs 24/7– my ears, tail, and wings are part of my body, but in the same way I'm not always consciously aware of my physical limbs I'm not always consciously aware of my phantom ones, either, and they fluctuate in intensity (that is, in how "real" they feel). Sometimes I just have a faint suggestion of movement when my ears swivel or my tail swishes, and sometimes they might as well be physically present because they have weight and I can feel everything they're touching (which can get uncomfortable in chairs and stuff). Usually it's somewhere in between leaning toward the latter, but that's just me and it's different for every person. No matter how subtle or intense it is or where/how you feel it, if you feel the presence of body parts that aren't physically there it "counts" as a phantom body part!

Im not really sure how to say this but we can't rely on understanding as a pillar of acceptance.

It's a matter of practicality. You will meet people you don't understand and you gotta be able to navigate that without being a bigot about it.

There is also just too much out there to know. You could spend your entire life studying and you will not achieve universal understanding. You will always find things you don't understand, things that might even be uncomfortable or upsetting for you. You gotta learn how to not make that other people's problem.

But it is entirely possible to get like 95% there on general principles alone.

Introducing a survey on Species-Based Misgendering, hosted by Duranos of The River System.

Species-Based Misgendering: the assumption of one's gender and/or pronouns based on the expectations of one's species, stemming from biases, when the expected gender does not match the individual's gender. Gendered Expectation: the expectation set for a species' gender, whether this bias comes from a cultural or folkoric background, establishment in a media, a linguistic framework, etc.

The survey is open both to the identities underneath the alterhuman umbrella, as well as nonhuman/human+ folks within plural conglomerates. While this survey is primarily looking for responses from those who have been misgendered based on their species, those who have not experienced species-based misgendering are welcome to complete the survey as well. Interpretation of what counts as species-based misgendering is open to interpretation by each individual, and there are long-form fillable responses throughout the survey to accommodate this.

The survey is set to close on July 31st, 2026. I welcome folks to share the link to the survey wherever you are active in the alterhuman community.

Something I don't get is some alterhumans or nonhumans referring to the random strangers around them as "the humans." You guys do realize that maybe the guy in the formal suit and tie you saw the other day is an otherkin. Or that tired mother with her child on the public bus is a therian. Or that red cap wearing conservative is an alienkin but calls themself a "starseed." Mr. Average Joe who loves working in office cubicles, wearing suits and ties, drinking black coffee, and comes home by saying "honey, I'm home!" is an otherlinker.

Not everyone expresses their alterhumanity out loud. Some keep it all to themselves.

Tbh there is an overabundance of media about a nonhuman creature's deep desire and journey to become human, and so very few of the opposite

Many of those movies/shows are very good and I like them but the whole time I'm feeling like it's tragic in a way. The thought of a creature giving up its otherness to assimilate into humanity is really fuckin sad to me. Or a human getting the chance to be something else freaking out and rejecting it.

Just makes me feel all the more alienated, y'know. Like "damn why don't I relate to this allegedly universal enthusiasm for being human" and "why is the desire to be anything else always wrong"

what really drives me nuts is that like. this happens an average of x times per year as a visibly weird person, but we only get made aware of it a small fraction of the time. you can't kill yourself you have to be clocky in the gas station.

Being clocky when i was working as a barista was one of my big joys. Being clocky when i was teaching high schoolers how to play the marimba was my reason for being for half a decade. It sucks how scared I am to leave the house I live in now. But I still need to try and be clocky at the grocery store. I wish i had a job to be clocky at. Being visibly me is one of the most radical acts I'm capable of, and I hope that one day we live in a world where it isn't radical at all.

Minoxidil is magic, all the areas of my body that have remained totally bald (chest, inner forearms, etc) are now covered in fine hairs! With my hair color it's only visible close up in certain lighting, but knowing it's there feels so nice

All the body hair I already had is longer and thicker, too <3
