The Tenth Muse Progress: Sappho’s Chiton ✨

A little behind the scenes from when I chose the design for Sappho’s chiton (name of the simple gowns worn in this period of Greece) the design chosen was Chiton A!

I’m making a zine called The Tenth Muse where I turn Sappho’s poetry into comics- here’s her design so far!

I love queer history and poetry, and a major contributor to my awakening as a lesbian was reading poetry by Sappho, the poet Plato referred to as “The Tenth Muse.”

So I’m picking my 10 favorite poems/excerpts, and turning them into comics that everyone can read for free- to make the sharing of an important wlw figure more accessible to people who may not know about the impact she’s had.

I referenced as many artworks of Sappho as I could to get her looking just right and finally settled on hairstyle C, but I figured it’d be cool to show the runner ups. I’ll be posting updates on Reddit and YouTube as well as posting full comics on Tapas and Webtoon once they’re done! Social links can be found here!
