To me, everything Wrathion does screams that he is still a kid. All of it. And I feel like someone needs to let him be a kid. I feel like Sabellian needs to set him in time out and say, “Enough. Go have a strudel and calm down.”
It’s not fair that Wrathion was so lonely, that he had to surround himself with mortals and struggle to be seen beyond his father’s shadow. It must sting to see a whole flight of black dragons show up after being alone for so long, to see they found their way from their corruption, when he assumed all were lost. There must be a little part of him realizing that the tasks he’s had his mortals do to wipe out other black dragons may not have been the best choice of action.
After all, he’s a kid on his own, and he has struggled to do what is right. He’s messed up spectacularly, but I just really want to give him some hot chocolate, a blanket, and some gingerbread men he can snap the heads off with his teeth.

#okay sorry to leave a novel in the tags but I have lots of thoughts on wrathion#wrathion has had the mantle of responsibility thrust on his shoulders from before he even hatched#that he was a black dragon free of the old gods corruption#like imagine being told this forever and hearing this in his egg and he just goes#well okay i have to prove myself because i’m the only one left#so he has this massive chip on his shoulder from the get-go to prove himself but he’s just so young#and then suddenly you have all these black dragons showing up like ‘sup we weren’t corrupted either lol we’ve been around’#and i think wrathion struggles so much with this because he’s been trying So hard that he feels threatened#he literally never had a chance to be a kid he was just immediately thrown into world-changing events and tried to roll with it#while everyone also treated him with so much suspicion because they expect him to turn out like his dad too#honestly i think story wise it would do him good for sabellian to take over the black dragons so he can just… be and discover himself#because i feel like so much of his personality has just sprung up from his need to prove himself and he’s never been anything else#that without that he has nothing else- but he NEEDS to find something else#so yes i agree he needs to be given a blanket and some cookies and do some self discovery

Don’t hide this in the tags! It’s spot-on! And so is OP!
Ever since he discovered the elixir to help Ebyssian retain his sanity, I imagine he’s been wracked by guilt over all the dragons he had killed in his early days. They could have all been saved. Fahrad. Nalice. All of them.
And now he sees what that would have looked like when Sabellian’s crew comes swooping in. It has to be eating him up inside.
It’s not the screw-up that the rest of the world condemns him for (the Garrosh/Iron Horde/Legion fiasco), but I bet it’s the one that keeps him awake at night more than any other.
Sabellian goading him is only going to make him more desperate to prove himself, when yes, cookies and a blanket are exactly what he needs. (Along with the chance to just be himself without all the expectations, bias, suspicion, and doubt heaped on him. It’s a wonder he wasn’t swarmed by sha in Pandaria, really…)
Not disagreeing with this but just to add:
Someone made a point to say that Sabellian has JUST NOW shown his face again, while Wrathion has actually been doing things he feels is best for the flight (yes yes I know there was the whole "where's Wrathion" thing but the point is he was here for more time and more recently than Sabellian). How angering must it be for Wrath to be trying SO HARD and some older guy just SHOWS UP after how long in Outland? From Wrath's perspective the idea of some guy who barely tried anything in comparison is the better pick because TECHNICALLY he uncorrupted instead of straight up killed must be utterly mortifying. I honestly can't say who would be better at this point, but I can see how painful it must be for Wrath to not get the throne because it would mean all that sacrifice was for nothing.
