Two banditos at the keys for Paladin Strait/Bandito in MTWEI.

The marriage of Paladin Strait and Bandito together is perhaps one of their best transitions they've done for the setlist. I couldn't keep from tears when this played on the big screen for More Than We Ever Imagined. They stand back-to-back, united in a serene verse as the towers of Dema stand forebodingly behind the pair. Always covering the other.

Immortal Torchbearer, and reincarnating Clancy:

Every time the cycle resets, Clancy’s soul reincarnates into someone else. Each Clancy looks different, but his traits and behaviors are essentially identical, which is one of the reasons why Torchbearer can easily detect him. The leading bishop (previous Clancy) knows when the soul is reborn and assigns him the name.

Torchbearer has been doing this for seemingly hundreds of years, but he’s forgotten. He doesn’t remember who he used to be, or how his powers came about. All he knows is that he needs to help Clancy— until he is finally able to break the cycle.

He doesn’t do it because he believes he has to, he does it because he wants to. He cares deeply for Clancy. He’s in love with him, he feels as if their souls are connected. Clancy feels it too, but he still succumbs to his destined struggles over and over again. Torch’s help weakens the cycle ever so slightly each time. The black bishop ink slowly depleting every few cycles is confirmation to him.

When Clancy is finally able to break the cycle once and for all, Torch is granted two options, remain immortal, or permanently let go of his powers and live out the remainder of his life with Clancy. Maybe it’s a gift from the universe for never giving up on someone else. Someone who needed help. A soul who would’ve been doomed for all eternity if it weren’t for a guiding light.

That decision comes easy. Torchbearer will choose Clancy, always.

The Nova Bishop who must always forget, who learns to feel an empty space where the memories of Torchbearer used to be (it’s like licking your gums, where a tooth has fallen) and The Torchbearer who can never forget, who feels them pulling him down at every movement.

Torchbearer could carve Clancy’s features out with the curves of his own palm in the Trench mud, who stains the page with his sweat while he tries to preserve him on tissue paper. Only cycles to them, but he was the one standing guard over them night to night, so of course they’re people. To him it’s all they’ve ever been.
