Summary: To make up for “disrupting” reader’s studying in the library, Fiyero invites them to join him for a study session out in the campus gardens.
Warnings: None
The next day, you were buried in your books, as usual. The library was quiet, but there was an unsettling sense of anticipation in the air — probably due to the constant teasing you had received from Fiyero the previous day. You were trying to focus on a particular dense chapter about magical theory when a familiar voice interrupted your thoughts.
“Knew I’d find you here.”
You looked up, already knowing who it was.
Fiyero stood in front of you, his trademark grin plastered on his face, as always.
“I’m busy,” you muttered, eyes already returning to the page.
“Oh, come on, you’re not too busy to come study with me, are you?” He asked, the mischievous edge in his voice unmistakable.
You glanced up again, raising an eyebrow. “Study? With you?”
“Exactly,” he said, leaning in slightly. “We can head out to the gardens. It’s peaceful out there, and I’m sure you could use the fresh air.”
You sighed, rolling your eyes. “And what makes you think I’d agree to study with you with all people?”
“I’m very persuasive,” Fiyero said with a wink, stepping closer to the table. “Besides, you’ll be more work done than you think. It’s all about the environment, Y/N.”
You starred at him, your expression a mix of suspicion and curiosity. “And what in it for me?”
Fiyero leaned a little closer, lowing his voice. “A change of scenery. And, of course, your favorite prince’s company.” He gave you a playful, exaggerated bow. “I’m sure that’s incentive enough.”
You couldn’t help the small, reluctant smile that tugged at your lips. “You’re impossible.”
“I’m persistent,” he corrected, raising an eyebrow.
“So, what do you say? One hour. No distractions. Just you, me, and our books in the gardens. A perfect study spot.”
You sighed dramatically, but your lips quirked with amusement. “Fine. But don’t expect me to be entertained by your company. I’ll be there to study, not to be distracted by your ridiculous antics.”
Fiyero gave you a satisfied smile. “Deal.” He turned to walk toward the door but glanced back over his shoulder. “I’ll meet you at the garden entrance in twenty minutes. Don’t be late.”
You watched him go, rolling your eyes. You knew you were being unreasonable, but the last thing you needed was for Fiyero to turn a study session into one of his games. You grumbled to yourself as you gathered your materials.
Twenty minutes later, you found yourself standing outside the garden entrance, arms crossed and waiting. It wasn’t that you didn’t enjoy the peace of the gardens — it was one of the few places at Shiz where she could think without distraction — but the idea of spending time with Fiyero always came with its own set of challenges.
“Here I am,” Fiyero’s voice called out, and you turned to see him walking toward you with that same playful grin.
“You’re late,” you said, trying to keep your indifferent demeanor.
Fiyero shrugged as if it was no big deal. “You weren’t exactly on time yourself, bookworm.”
“I wasn’t the one who had to go back and pick flowers on my way here,” you retorted, raising an eyebrow.
He laughed, a sound that always made the air around him brighter. “I’m sure you wouldn’t mind if I picked a few for you next time.”
You shot him a look. “We’re here to study, remember?”
“Right, right,” he said, still smirking, “Let’s sit.” He gestured to the grass, where he’d already had a blanket laid out with his notes and books. “I promise no distractions today.”
You reluctantly kneeled beside him, settling your books in front of you and preparing to dive into the material. But it was hard to focus with Fiyero so close by. He had a way of making everything feel…less serious.
“So,” he began, flipping open one of his books, “do you mind if I ask how you study? Do you do the whole ‘quiet corner’ thing, or are you a ‘study while walking around type’?”
You couldn’t help the smile that tugged at your lips. “I don’t walk around. I like my space and my quiet. And my books.” You looked at him with a raised eyebrow. “Not that you’d understand.”
He gave you a mock pout. “Ouch. You wound me Y/N.”
“Good,” you muttered under your breath, trying to ignore him.
Fiyero leaned closer, his voice dropping low and teasing. “You know, if you focused on me as much as you do your books, you’d actually be very entertained.”
You glanced up, your lips curving into a sly smile. “Is that what you think? You think you’re more interesting than my books?”
He leaned back, a mischievous glint in his eyes, “I’m definitely more interesting than your books.”
And just like that, the study session continued — less about studying, and more about the light, teasing energy between the two of you that seemed impossible to resist.
More than hour had passed, and the evening sun began to dip beneath the horizon, painting the sky in hues of pin and gold. The gardens once filled with light, were now cloaked in the gentle shadows of dusk. You closed the last of your books with a sigh, glancing at the setting sun. The peaceful evening had made it easy to lose track of time, but now, with your paper almost done, you knew it was time to call it quits.
“I think that’s enough for today,” you said, standing up and gathering your things. “I’m getting a little tired, and I’ve still got a few other things to do.”
Fiyero was leaning back on the blanket, his gaze fixed up at the sky. He looked at you as you start to pack up, and for a moment, his usual teasing smile faded into something a little more serious.
“Wait.”
You paused, raising an eyebrow, “What now?”
He didn’t move at first, his eyes still on the sky. “Stay a little longer.”
You stared at him, unsure if you’d heard him correctly. “What?”
“Just for a little while,” he repeated, sitting up and pushing himself off the ground. He moved toward you with that same confident, casual air he always carried, but there was something different in his voice tonight. Something softer, almost vulnerable. “I promise, no distractions. Just… sit with me. Watch the stars.”
“You want me to stay here…and do nothing but stare at the sky?” You asked, your voice a little doubtful.
“Exactly,” he said with a grin, though it was softer than usual. “You don’t need to worry about anything else. Just for tonight, don’t think about your papers, your research, or your perfect study schedule. Just… stay with me for a bit.”
You hesitated. The thought of sitting still and letting the evening slip by felt foreign, but there was something about the way he said — so earnestly — that made it hard to say no.
You let out quiet sigh, giving in despite yourself. “Fine. But don’t make it weird.”
“Promise,” he said, his grin returning, this time warmer.
You lay back down on the blanket and Fiyero followed, settling beside you. The quiet of the evening settled around you, the only sound the rustling of the trees and the occasional distant chirping of insects. You let your eyes wander up to the sky, were the first starts of the evening were beginning to twinkle, scattered across the vast expanse above. There was something calming about the stillness of the moment, about being there with Fiyero, who was always so full of energy, now quietly beside you.
“This is nice,” you finally admitted, your voice softer than usual. “I can’t remember the last time I just… relaxed like this.”
Fiyero glanced over you, his lips curving into a small, pleased smile. “It’s easy to forget how to just be sometimes, huh?”
You nodded, your gaze still fixed on the sky. “I’m so used to having to do something all the time. Study, research, work.”
“You’re allowed to take a break every once in a while, you know.” Fiyero’s voice was gentle, almost like he was giving you permission to let go of your usual responsibilities.
You didn’t respond right away. Instead, you let the silence stretch between the two of you, watching the stars come out in full force.
The cool night air began to settle in, but it was peaceful, calming. You realized how rare it was for you to simply enjoy the moment without the weight of expectations hanging over you. There was something about the way the stars seemed to stretch on endlessly, filling the sky with mysteries yet to be solved. It made the problems of your everyday life feel suddenly smaller, more manageable.
“I think I could get used to this,” you murmured after a while, your voice thoughtful.
“Getting used to me?” Fiyero teased, nudging your shoulder gently.
“Don’t get ahead of yourself,” you replied, though the smile tugging at the corners of your lips betrayed you.
The two of you fell into a comfortable silence again, watching the stars. The night seemed to stretch on forever, but neither of you rushed to leave.
After a while, Fiyero broke the quiet again, his voice soft but sincere. “I’m glad you stayed.”
You glanced over at him, your heart giving a small flutter at the sincerity in his eyes. “Me too,” you said, your tone quiet.
His gaze lingered back on you for a moment, and for the first time that evening, the playful smirk that always seemed to accompany his words faded. He turned fully onto his side to face you, his face inches from yours.
Your breath caught in your throat at the sudden closeness. Your eyes flickered to his lips, and you felt your pulse quicken.
Fiyero reached up to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear, his fingers brushing lightly against your skin. His touch was surprisingly gentle, and it sent a shiver down your spine. His hand slid down to cup your cheek, his eyes never leaving yours.
Your thoughts were only on the moment, on the soft pressure of Fiyero’s hand on your cheek and the warmth that seemed to spread between you. The air felt charged, like something was on the edge of happening, and it was all you could to keep your breathing steady, to not give in to the pull between you both.
Fiyero shifted slightly, his face only inches from yours now. His hand still cupping your face, his thumb tracing circular motions, but the touch was more deliberate now, the warmth of his skin sending sparks of awareness through you.
Fiyero slowly leaned in, his face now close enough that you could feel the warmth radiating from him. He paused for a fraction of a second, as if waiting for you to pull away or tell him to stop. But you didn’t.
Instead, you closed the small distance between yourself and Fiyero, your breath mingling with his as you met him halfway. Your lips touched softly at first, a tentative brush that left both of you breathless, as if testing the waters. But when neither pulled away, the kiss deepened, growing more confident, more urgent, as if all the teasing, all the lingering touches of the evening had led them to this exact moment.
For a moment, the world seemed to disappear around them. There was nothing but the two of you, the night, and the stars overhead. When you finally pulled away, both you and Fiyero were left breathless, your faces flushed, and hearts racing.
Your fingers were still lightly resting against his chest, feeling the rapid beat of his heart beneath your touch. Fiyero’s hand lingered on your cheek for a moment before sliding away, though his gaze stayed locked on yours, a soft smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
You looked up at him, your voice a little shaky, but soft. “You really know how to ruin a study session, don’t you?”
Fiyero chuckled, his grin widening. “I wouldn’t call it ruined. Enhanced, maybe.”
“Enhanced?” You repeated, arching an eyebrow. “You interrupted my perfectly peaceful night of academic productivity, dragged me out here, and—”
“Kissed you under the stars,” he finished smoothly, his smirk turning into something softer as he laced his hand with yours. “You’re welcome, by the way.”
You rolled your eyes, but once again, the smile tugging at your lips betrayed you. “You’re insufferable.”
“And yet, here you are,” he teased, leaning back into the grass and pulling you with him until you were both lying side by side again.
Another moment passed, as the two of you stared up at the sky, the stars shimmering brightly above. The silence between you both wasn’t awkward or heavy—it was warm, comfortable, like the space between you and Fiyero had shifted, leaving no room for walls or defenses.
“You know,” Fiyero said after a while, his voice quieter now, almost hesitant, “this wasn’t just about stargazing.”
You shifted your gaze to him, your brow furrowing slightly. “What do you mean?”
He exhaled a soft laugh, rubbing the back of his neck as he turned to meet your gaze. “This whole thing,” he said, gesturing vaguely to the garden, the stars, and their impromptu study session. “It was kind of… my way of getting you to go on a date with me.”
You blinked, your lips parting in surprise. “A date?”
“Yeah,” he admitted, his grin sheepish now, a rare look of vulnerability in his usually confident demeanor. “I mean, you’re always so busy with your books and your papers, and I figured if I asked outright, you’d probably just say no.”
You stared at him for a moment, your surprise quickly melting into something softer. “So, instead of asking me like a normal person, you orchestrated this whole stargazing-and-study-session thing?”
“Pretty much,” he said, his smile growing. “And, if I’m being honest, I think it worked out pretty well.”
You laughed, the sound light and warm as you shook your head. “You’re ridiculous.”
“And yet,” he said, leaning closer with a playful glint in his eye, “you’re still here.”
You couldn’t stop the smile that spread across your face. “Yeah, well, maybe it’s not all bad.”
“Not all bad?” He repeated, feigning offense. “I’ll take that as a glowing review.”
The both of you laughed, the sound filling the quiet garden. When it faded, Fiyero reached out, brushing a strand of hair from your face, his touch gentle. “For the record,” he said softly, his voice sincere, “I’m really glad you stayed.”
You looked at him, your heart skipping a beat at the warmth in his gaze. “Me too,” you said, your voice just as quiet.
As the stars sparkled above them, you couldn’t help but think that maybe, just maybe, taking a break from your books, wasn’t such a bad idea—especially if it meant more nights like this with Fiyero.
