The Dark Lord of Derkholm
The tourism industry is ultimately a colonial enterprise, which forces the colonized subject to behave as stereotype for entertainment and participate in the system that’s exploiting them in order to survive, since the industry attempts to subsume all other industries into its service. It causes the tourist to be incapable of seeing the colonized subject as a person, since they’ve been reduced by the structure of the encounter into having no more autonomy than any exotic animal or relic they are met with on the tour. This system cannot be changed slowly from within, but must be destroyed entirely.

Holy shit….
Real life solarpunk.
I just read the links, and omg this is even better.
So I looked at it and knew it was using the open courtyard and the pools and fountains to do a lot of the work of cooling the house, but it’s also got drip irrigation for all of those plants (which adds more moisture to the air and also helps cool it in addition to being an effective and efficient way of watering the plants), it’s got a roof garden and other eco-conscious stuff. It combines modern construction techniques with classic Arabic art and architecture.
And his home is a cultural center.
He holds lectures, concerts and salons in his home, with guests and speakers from around the world. He’s founded multiple institutions to preserve Islamic history and architecture. He’s an activist against the extremist factions he says are trying to hijack Islam.
His home is going to be part of an international institute offering degrees in Islamic history and science, as his legacy, housing a collection of over one hundred thousands of his photos, drawings and writings about Islam and the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.
This is serious real-life Islamic solarpunk for real.
Tumblr likes the idea of solarpunk, even if there’s not a real body of work about it yet. Well, we’re missing that people are already doing this for real, and have been for a long time.
I am not generally an architecture fan. It’s nice and all, but it doesn’t do a lot for me, especially modern American stuff. But I am totally bowled over by this and must now go look at everything he’s ever designed.
"remember! the citizens arent at fault its the israeli government!" nah fuck them hos too if they were real ones theyd leave lmao like nobody is forcing ppl to colonize palestine and its not like its a settler colony thats 500 years old where none of the original colonizers great great grandmas are even alive. but like the 72 year old grandma living there chose to be there. just please use your brains and think about why palestinians are being displaced and who is replacing them. like u forreal got people from new jersey living in other peoples homes in israel.
stop portraying this as some like hapless accident where the adult colonizers stumbled onto the land as an oopsies. israeli citizens are responsible for palestinian oppression. american and british citizens are also responsible, for the record. our tax dollars fund palestinian oppression and thats a big reason why we must support their liberation. our culpability within this oppression demands action. not stupid ass feel good posts making sure people dont feel guilty for actively contributing to genocide. there are bigger things to worry about lol
The 25th of May is a whole other mood in the wake of yet another "ceasefire" in Gaza, oh man. Palestinian citizens of Israel are being arrested in droves. Families are setting up tents over the ruins of their homes. Mothers are mourning their murdered children. I've never really understood why this day was so incredibly gut-wrenching until now.
“‘You know what day it is, Ping?’ said Colon. ‘Er… twenty-fifth of May, sarge.’ ‘And you know what that means, Ping?’ ‘Er…’ ‘It means,’ said Nobby, ‘that anyone important enough to ask where we’re going-’ ’-knows where we’ve gone,’ said Fred Colon. The door slammed behind them.”

Microsoft announces it will shut down ebook program and confiscate its customers' libraries
Microsoft has a DRM-locked ebook store that isn’t making enough money, so they’re shutting it down and taking away every book that every one of its customers acquired effective July 1.
Customers will receive refunds.
This puts the difference between DRM-locked media and unencumbered media into sharp contrast. I have bought a lot of MP3s over the years, thousands of them, and many of the retailers I purchased from are long gone, but I still have the MP3s. Likewise, I have bought many books from long-defunct booksellers and even defunct publishers, but I still own those books.
When I was a bookseller, nothing I could do would result in your losing the book that I sold you. If I regretted selling you a book, I didn’t get to break into your house and steal it, even if I left you a cash refund for the price you paid.
People sometimes treat me like my decision not to sell my books through Amazon’s Audible is irrational (Audible will not let writers or publisher opt to sell their books without DRM), but if you think Amazon is immune to this kind of shenanigans, you are sadly mistaken. My books matter a lot to me. I just paid $8,000 to have a container full of books shipped from a storage locker in the UK to our home in LA so I can be closer to them. The idea that the books I buy can be relegated to some kind of fucking software license is the most grotesque and awful thing I can imagine: if the publishing industry deliberately set out to destroy any sense of intrinsic, civilization-supporting value in literary works, they could not have done a better job.

If you’ve got an ereader and want to actually own your books, I heartily recommend using cailbre to scrape the DRM off and so you can backup the files.

Fred Hampton Jr visiting his father on Father’s Day…his grave is annually shot by local police
.Some context for this:
-Fred Hampton was a black activist from Chicago – an extraordinary speaker, youth organizer for the NAACP.
-He joined the Black Panthers and shone so brightly that he was made chair of the Chicago chapter when he was only 20.
-He founded the Rainbow Coalition, which brought together Black and Latino activists and radical anti-poverty Catholics. He forged an alliance among major Chicago street gangs to help them make peace and work for social change.
-In 1967, when he was just 19, Hampton was identified by the FBI as a “radical threat.” The FBI tried to subvert his activities in Chicago, sowing disinformation to get the groups he’d drawn together to distrust each other, and getting an FBI plant next to him as a bodyguard.
-(This is part of an illegal FBI program called COINTELPRO, which aimed to paint black civil rights activists (among others) as violent and threatening. If you’ve only seen pictures of the Black Panthers as armed and dangerous revolutionaries, and never heard of their children’s breakfast program, their community health clinics, or their “copwatch” patrols, this is why. It’s because COINTELPRO was a highly successful work of political propaganda.)
-On December 3, 1969, Hampton taught a political education course at a local church, and then several Panthers gathered at his apartment for a late dinner. One of them was the FBI plant bodyguard, who drugged Hampton.
-At 4:45 AM on December 4, a squad of Chicago Police officers and FBI agents with a warrant to search for weapons stormed the apartment. Investigations later showed they fired between 90 and 99 times. The Panther on security detail, Mark Clark, was holding a shotgun. He was shot, and the gun went off into the ceiling. This was the only shot fired by the Panthers.
-Fred Hampton, in another room, didn’t awaken. He was shot in his bed. Twice, in the head, at point-blank range. He was 21.
-Four weeks after witnessing Hampton’s death, his finance Deborah Johnson gave birth to their son, Fred Hampton Jr. That’s him in the photograph, visiting the grave of a father who died before he was born. A resting place riddled with bullets.
rent shouldn't exist as a concept but also all rent should be rent-to-own
like if i must pay to inhabit a space then at the very fucking least i should be paying toward ownership of the space i inhabit. paying some leech more than half my wages for housing that i have no stake in other than my immediate survival and from which i'll eventually walk away from or just die in with nothing to show for but the sunk cost of my livelihood is unconscionable
Someone I know not well enough to voice my opinion on the subject said something like why didn’t God make potatoes a low-calorie food so I am here to say: God made them like that because their nutrition density IS what makes them healthy. By God I mean Andean agricultural technicians. Potato is healthy BECAUSE potato holds calories and vitamins. Do not malign potato
i spent $32 on this fucking bowl at the moma and at first i felt bad buying it bc it was so expensive but ive had a terrible day today and every time i look at my lil bowl im like :o) you know what. i can get through anything with this bowl by my side
i literally get what marie kondo was talking about now
bc everyone keeps requesting to see it filled :)
I don’t know how long I’ve been here. Time seems to pass differently. But the place is cozy and private so I have no complaints. And whenever I’m hungry, I go outside with my bowl and walk down the hill to the shore. Sometimes the lake is made of soup. Sometimes it’s huge pasta noodles the size of barges. Sometimes it’s breakfast cereal. Sometimes it’s dumplings the size of great whales. I dip my little bowl and take a portion and carry it back up to the house.
Today I found a new bowl! In its center is a little hill with a little house. I will carry it down to the shore and fill it up, and whomever lives in that little house can have a tiny portion of my meal. I hope they have a nice bowl to put it in..

And then someone swaps Theseus for antoher hero
Is it still the same ship?”
