some lore: they were childhood friends who got separated when the ottomans passed through their little balkan village and took jakov (who would become yakub) as part of the devshirme/blood tax. years later, yakub is part of an ottoman campaign moving through a recently subdued region, and todor (tonsured as teodosije) is a monk in a local fortified monastery that refuses to surrender and is actively harboring and aiding rebels. yakub is leading a detachment that receives written orders to suppress resistance in the district. the janissaries besiege the monastery, desecrate and burn it, and execute the monks. teodosije and yakub come face to face as yakub is about to slay him, but a split-second flashback triggered by a birthmark under teodosije’s right eye stops him. he ends up sparing his life.
