Unfortunately you don’t know if you’ll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself..!! NOW HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE… Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can perhaps buy precious time to get themselves to a phone and dial 911. It’s an interesting technique for sure, although I’ve never heard of it First and foremost, call 911. That’s always the place to start. Take slow deep breaths to keep your body full of oxygen and try and to help keep yourself calm. My dad is a trauma paramedic, and one thing he taught me is baby aspirin! If it’s a available, take 2 tablets (160mg)… Baby aspirin is ideal because it’s chewable! But if it’s not available, still take a normal aspirin right away. Aspirin thins your blood (makes it more “watery”), so if the vessels are blocked, it makes it easier for blood to pass through. All that being said… Keeping calm and calling 911 is where you want to start. Hyperventilating will just get your blood pressure up! I don’t have sources for any of this other than my nursing training, and my job as a medical assistant… But if myself or a family member was having a heart attack, that’s where I’d be starting!!

Alright people of tumblr. Forget everything you’ve read in this post. For real. The only thing OP got right is that the person who taught you CPR didn’t teach you how to do it on yourself. BECAUSE YOU CAN’T DO CPR ON YOURSELF. IF YOU CAN, YOU DON’T NEED IT.

As @country-kinda-nurse said, call 911. If you have chest pain, call 911. Do not attempt to make it in by yourself, call 911. 

 "10 seconds left before losing consciousness.“ No. Just no. 

So after you’ve called 911, and you’re talking to the dispatcher. Chew some aspirin. How much? 324mg-325mg. (That’s 4 baby aspirin or one 325mg aspirin. "But it’s not the chewable kind.” Don’t care, chew. Swallow. You may rinse your mouth with water and swallow that, but no more than that swig. 

“I can’t take aspirin because —.” Unless the next words out of your mouth are “I break out in hives and my throat swells shut,” TAKE THE ASPIRIN. Often people say, “I can’t, I’m on blood thinners.” Well, you’re in luck. We have you take aspirin not to thin the blood, but to make your blood “more slippery,” if you will; Because we can’t shoot you up with cooking spray. 

So seriously just do those two things. And the paramedics will do the rest. 

1. Call 911 

2. Chew aspirin.
