theus was born prometheus lucky westwood, on march 25th 1982 in houston texas. his mother, winona, and his father, norman, lived in the nice, middle class suburbs and to everyone who knew them, they were a nice, picture perfect family of three.
that all changed when theus was just about to move from middle school to high school. his dad had an affair with his secretary, the old cliche, and left his mom for her. that summer was spent moving to a much poorer suburb, and trying to stay in touch with his old friends after learning he'd be going to a different high school than planned. his friends lost touch with him, despite promising they would be friends forever. his dad made little to no effort to see him, besides the occasional lunch at a cheap diner. these two betrayals hit theus very hard.
in high school, he did his best to do well, not wanting to fall behind despite his new schools reputation. it was there he met his friends who would eventually become his bandmates. his closest friend was lucky jones, their eventual lead singer and head songwriter. he was introduced to the drums by a friendly neighbour, letting hims practice in his garage.
at first, they would rehearse in the neighbours garage, practising covers of older rock bands until they got good enough to perform at the school talent show, then proms and dances, then the proms and dances of other schools. they started doing their own songs, writing about their collective traumas and messy high school dramas. it was fun, and they treated it like their true passion. they went to various 'battle of the bands' type events, sometimes even winning.
after graduating, they all went to community college, mostly for the social aspect. their main focus was still the band. after many failed, ridiculous names, they landed on 'suspension effect'. they scored gigs in local bars and clubs throughout houston, and somehow, produced a terrible first album, which had a limited run and is a rare find for fans today. despite that, they were scouted, taken in by a indie rock label who helped them produce a much better second album, and start touring as the opening act for better, more popular bands.
their second album gained traction in the indie rock scene, and by their third album, they went on their own tour. from there, things exploded, their popularity growing exponentially. everything was happening - songs on the radio, interviews in magazines, performing shows on television, music videos. they were only in their early twenties, so the rockstar lifestyle suited them - women, groupies, drugs, drinking, late nights, burning the candle at both ends. it was a wild ride, and theus' memory definitely has some blurry patches.
during this time, theus would meet his first wife, aiko, a japanese-american supermodel. despite their glamorous lifestyles, the two quickly settled, keeping a semi-private life away from prying eyes that grounded them both. they got married young, theus being only twenty-five, and bought a home together in california.
during the production of the band's seventh studio album, everything fell apart. aiko fell pregnant after many failed attempts, but soon after they discovered the reason for her fertility issues - she had cancer, and it was terminal. theus felt his world falling apart. at the same time, lucky, who had a long history of drugs went back into rehab. within a six month period, theus lost his wife to cancer, and then his best friend to a sudden, accidental overdose.
after the funerals, the band felt apart, but theus was too grief stricken to care. he spiralled and mentally fell into a deep dark hole. he engaged in a lot of self-destructive behaviours. alcohol, drugs, sex with men and women, isolating himself from his family and friends. he will fully admit that he had a year of his life where he barely remembered anything except in bits and pieces. he truly thought he was going to kill himself, even if it wasn't on purpose.
he snapped out of it for the sake of his family, after he saw how much his behaviour hurt them. for the one year where he tried to ruin his life, it took him three to recover. he went to rehab, he went to therapy, he flipped his life upside down. he became someone he used to despise - healthy eating, exercise, yoga, journaling. he travelled the world for great food and culture and hiking.
he distanced himself from the toxic side of the music industry, although he did make somewhat of a comeback. he didn't bring the band back, he couldn't without lucky, and after those two significant deaths, he felt hurt and abandoned by his band mates who just seemed to disappear into their own lives. he's since forgiven them, but never fully reconnected. instead, he became a drummer for hire, working for other bands or musical artists who needed it. he acted as somewhat of a mentor to some, trying to steer them away from the darker and more dangerous side of the glamorous life.
between his new work and the continued sales and royalties from his old work, theus was a multi-millionaire. he became involved in various charities, especially those focused on cancer treatment and support for drug addicts. he did meet his ex-wife and within a year of meeting they married, but it didn't last, and they divorced after only a couple of years. their current feelings towards one another are somewhat antagonistic, thankfully he doesn't have to see her.
after his divorce was finalised, he took himself on a road trip, which is when he discovered jasper. it was love at first sight, and since his ex-wife had gotten the house in the settlement, he was as free as a bird to move.
he discovered sunset sounds was for sale due to the original owner not being able to afford it, and he snapped it up in an instant. due to his wealth, he doesn't care about profit, so long as the community can have access to great music and his staff are taken care of, he's happy to cover the shop during the bad years.
with only the shop to amuse him, he got bored and went looking for something else to do. his influence within the town meant he got offered a slot on the local radio, between 5pm to 7pm. he called it 'night driver', after his band's first terrible album, and dedicated it to playing great music for people driving home after work, with minimal chatter and absolutely no advertisements.
he's been in jasper for 5 years now, living downtown in a trendy 70s style apartment. he's thinking about moving further out to get a garden where he can grow flowers and vegetables and keep chickens, but that's a future plan. right now he's just enjoying today, whatever it brings.
