Let's talk about Beck's End and why you should support it!!
In the UK historically, Northern voices and rural voices are too often left out of the conversation. A lot of this is just straight up classism - for Americans, think Appalachia or the Deep South.
It also has very deep historical roots here in the UK - the Northerners resisted the Norman invasion after 1066 and were punished for that by having all their woodlands and farmlands burned and then sown with lime (the mineral) to poison the soil so that they had to be dependent on southern agriculture for food. You can still see the effect this scarring of the landscape had on the land today (it's why we have the Yorkshire moors that Kathy and Heathcliffe are so fond of).
Much like the way this phenomenon plays out in many countries, even today Northerners are thought of as violent, small-minded and stupid: regardless of our contributions to culture (hi, The Beatles). The North of England is profoundly and unfairly underfunded by the government for things like state infrastructure - from transport to healthcare.
So for me, (Ella), as someone who lives in the North, making Beck's End isn't any old audio drama project. It's really meaningful to me that it's a series that's set in the North of England, starring a cast from the North and working with a crew from the North. That's actually kind of a big deal.

ok i'm three months late but i finished the last episodes of the strange case of starship iris
i don't even really know what to say, i started listening to this audio drama when i was 18 and desperately trying to figure out who i was or wanted to be, and i cannot put into words how much comfort it has brought me since.
i remember listening to it on long car rides and at orchestra camp and when i was feeling anxious and when i couldn't sleep, and despite the fact that in the beginning the stakes felt almost too high for my heart to handle, after the second time of listening it started to feel like a little pocket of home far out in space and also in my ears.
and now eight years later i still come back to listen to the whole thing about once or twice a year, and even though i've changed and grown a lot since, it feels just as comforting as it did back then.
bittersweet to hear the end, but the beauty of modern media is that I can just listen to it again whenever i want :')

REDACTEDÂ is a horror comedy audio drama from Athan (The Grotto) and Jamie Petronis (The Cellar Letters).
The show follows Jacob, a struggling actor who, desperate for a fresh start, assumes the identity of his deceased twin, Jordan. Expecting a simple accounting job, he instead finds himself accidentally in an underfunded secret government agency called THE REDACTED UNIT, tasked with discreetly handling bizarre and often dangerous paranormal cases.
âAs Jacob settles into his role, he begins to unravel the unsettling truths around his brotherâs death. What begins as an act of reinvention slowly becomes a desperate descent into a treacherous web of paranormal forces, secret agendas, and moral compromise.

When not in the archives or monitoring comms, she can be found with oversized headphones, listening to goth music while conducting research that might save lives.
Kirsten Ria (Hollow Body, Darkness Through a Window, The Bunny Graveyard 2, Ladies Night) as Jo Valentine (she/her) A former aberration hunter fleeing a corrupt legacy. Wielding violence like second nature, her sharp wit and sharper weapons make her indispensable. Despite her tough exterior, she's fiercely loyal to the team that has become her chosen family.
Devin Steffens (Dead West) as Lucas Kipp (he/him) The teamâs self-taught technophile, Lucas hides deep insecurity behind nervous energy and eager helpfulness. Brilliant but riddled with self-doubt, heâs constantly trying to prove he belongs - even when heâs already holding the team together from behind the scenes.
Joe Cliff Thompson (The Forgotten City, System Shock, Syntax, The Kingmaker Histories) as Maxwell Clark (he/him) A battle-worn veteran with more regrets than allies. Maxwellâs sardonic edge hides a deep grief and a fierce loyalty to the team. He knows how the game is played - and when it needs to be broken.
Ash Millman (The NoSleep Podcast, Playstation Access, WhatCulture) as Riley Fleming (she/her) The vibrant medical examiner who uses games and humor to balance her days of autopsies and dissections. The liveliest person in the room despite working exclusively with the dead, she finds whimsy in her macabre profession.
Nichole Goodnight (Slay the Princess, The NoSleep Podcast, Creepy, SCP Archives) as Evie Novak (she/her) Lev Rodriguez Shivers (Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, Annie and the AI, The Love Talker, Earth Eclipsed, Mayday Roleplay) as Nyx Novak (she/them) Sisters, speed demons, and the unitâs transport team. Nyx is blunt and brash, Evie smooth and professional; both adrenaline chasers with a fierce bond and no patience for rules they didnât write.
Rebecca Hansson (BE NOT AFRAID) as Ignatius Thomas Barker (Bominable Bominations, A Boss in a Billion) as Ignatius The cleanup specialists who handle the aftermath of aberration neutralization. This enigmatic pair (Couple? Siblings? Both? Eww.) approach their work with zeal and mystery in equal measure.
Anusia Battersby (The Magnus Protocol, The Attic Monologues, Dracula: 2004) as Control The mysterious overseer of The [REDACTED] Unit who maintains strict operational standards from behind the scenes. To The [REDACTED] Unit, Control embodies the mysterious power structure they serve, deciding which cases get pursued and what resources will be allocated to the team's dangerous work.
David Ault (Shadows at the Door, Sonic Society, The NoSleep Podcast, WOE.BEGONE, everything else) as Silas Montgomery (he/him) Maxwellâs old partner who vanished mid-mission. Respected and well-liked by the team, Silas was meticulous, intelligent, and strategic. His fate remains unknown, as does his connection to a deeper conspiracy.
Billie Hindle (The Magnus Protocol, Secrets of a Wallaby Boy, Partial Veil, Octavius Theatre Company) as Eloise Thorne Eloise serves as a remote intelligence contractor who maintains communications through an old rotary phone. Working from an undisclosed location, she monitors police dispatches, emergency channels, and civilian reports to identify potential aberrant activity and provide cases to The [REDACTED] Unit.
Nathan Lunsford (The Storage Papers) as Jordan Kane (he/him) Jacobâs late twin and former leader of The [REDACTED] Unit. Coldly principled and emotionally distant, Jordan sacrificed relationships for the greater good⊠until the secrets he kept caught up with him.
Dylan Griggs (WOE.BEGONE, The Diary of Aliza Schultz) as 'Elevator Guy' (đ€·/đ€·ââïž) Heâs always there. Same elevator, same time, always mid-conversation on his phone. No one knows his name, role, or department. Any attempt to engage him is quickly shut down with an annoyed, âIâm on the phone!â
Lyssa Jay (The Grotto, 400 Words A Horror) as Sloan Summers Sloan is the Foundationâs PR specialist and resident âfixer,â expertly reshaping public perception whenever aberration activity leaks into the spotlight. Armed with sharp suits and a sharper smile, she crafts convincing narratives that neutralize panic, and turns near-catastrophes into harmless anomalies.
Taylor Michaels (The Grotto, WOE.BEGONE) as Mars Donovan (he/him) A former data analyst who quit his corporate job after a close encounter with an aberration and the Foundation agents who failed to contain it. Mars now lives in a cluttered apartment filled with maps, string connections, and haphazard case files, where he operates a Youtube channel obsessing over aberration sightings that coincide with the cases of The [REDACTED] Unit.

To give you an idea of how much time has passed since I first started sketching out my preliminary podcast ideas in a doc on my computer titled âspace pals,â I started writing this show during the Obama administration. Making Starship Iris changed my life in any number of ways. So allow me to express some gratitude, while Iâm at it and while nobody can play me off:
Alex Yun designed our logo, which I still love ten years later.
Erin Baumann and Hannah Cross did all the sound work for the first two seasons of Starship Iris. This was a monumental undertaking they pulled off with aplomb. Jeffrey Nils Gardner handled the third season by themselves, like an absolute pro. In all cases, the sound design involved some enormous tasks: hell, just making it sound convincingly like the actors, recording in different locations and sometimes on different mics, were all in the same spaceship requires a lot of skill and hard work. Sci-fi shows live and die by their sound design; itâs basically the special effects budget plus the background worldbuilding details. The mixing and sound design made this show more believable, more exciting, and funnier. (A few standouts to me are Hannah deciding Krejjh wore flipflops, and Jeffrey adding a little hollow metal knocking sound in 3.04 when Krejjh pauses to describe the ship as crappy, like Krejjh slapped the wall a la the Fonz.)
(Incidentally, Jeffrey Nils Gardner has a new show theyâve sound designed out now! Itâs called The Harbingers and trust me, you should listen to it.)
Margaret Clark and Phoebe Seiders stepped in directing the second half of the first season while I was having a small nervous breakdown and it was a revelation to me that people out there actually enjoyed directing and were good at it (I donât and am not!). Jeffrey Nils Gardner and Rachel Kellum handled the directing for season two, really making those character moments (and emotional breakdowns) shine. For season three, Newton Schottelkotte, Ella Watts, and Lauren Grace Thompson landed the ship, ably steering us through those final arcs. Directing is magic to me, and you all are magicians. (Newtâs work includes Where the Stars Fell. Ella Watts has directed a bunch of things, the most dear to my heart being Camlann. Lauren Grace Thompsonâs other directing work includes Fawx & Stallion, and she also stars in The Harbingers.)
Amber Devereux of Tin Can Audio also helped out when it came to cutting some of the episodes together; a big thanks for that!
Season Two was a season of attempting to grow in painful ways and never being sure I was doing it right; in the process I made a lot of mistakes. Emily Jade Lomax and Aysha U. Farah helped me hammer out the season outline and work through the early episodes. (You should absolutely check out their show Second Star to the Left; bonus for Starship Iris enjoyers, it is directed by Rachel Kellum and its stars include Ishani Kanetkar!)
Sam Gray helped me out of a real bind by helpfully and swiftly creating a Dwarnian-English pidgin, which is the best language work on the entire show.
Tabitha OâConnell production managed season two. Eleanor Hyde production managed season three. In both cases, it was such an enormous relief to let someone who is talented at scheduling and organizing do the scheduling and organizing.
Eleanor Hyde and Jeffrey Nils Gardner also served as story consultants on Season Three. They did vital, important work, and to be honest, I think I credit them with the fact that there is a Season Three at all.
Andrea Klassen stepped in and helped tremendously when it came to the behind-the-scenes interviews, which was hugely necessary and much appreciated. She and Phobe Seiders have a show currently in post-production that I am really looking forward to. It's called No Normal Life, and you should all keep an eye out.
Chiron Star orchestrated and produced our incredible theme song (Erin Baumann handled the vocals, and credits Jamie Priceâs in-episode arrangement with her harmonies). You can buy or stream it on his bandcamp, along with a few other Season Two bangers.
Tail Light Rebellion wrote âGoing to Fallâ specifically for the show, and it was exactly what I needed, exactly when I needed it. You can download that here, or wait for their album on October 31st. Now a few words about the actors:
Ishani was a revelation as Arkady, and if Starship Iris never did anything elseâhey, we were the first to cast her in an audio drama (although certainly not the last). She had never done any professional acting at the time, and I pretty much immediately threw her in the deep end, where she swam like a goddamn fish, if youâll forgive the weird and offputting metaphor. I could not imagine anyone else in the role.
Cindy showed up when I was despairing of ever finding a Violet, with such an impressive resume (sheâs been on TV, multiple times!) and a versatile, natural delivery that I was stunned. The first time I tried to direct her and Ishani, I genuinely had no notes because I had to scoop my jaw off the floor at how good they sounded together. She's the real deal, folks.
Jamie absolutely embodied Brian in a way I didnât see coming. I could hear the lines in their voice as I was writing them, which was tremendously fun. (Also, Jamie was the one who kept the best track of Dwarnian words and phrases, a fact which never fails to delight people who listen to the show.) Jamie makes music under the name Must Be Tuesday and also arranged all the vocals for the plot-important sing along at the end of season one, which really went above and beyond. If that moment worked for you, know that it worked because of Jamie.
Bri brought so much energy, heart, and humor into the role of Krejjh. Sometimes in the script, I would just write âKrejjh says this word weirdlyâ and I knew I could always trust them to pull it off. Krejjh couldâve easily come across as a gimmick character, but Bri always grounded their performance in so much down-to-earth warmth.
Rukhmani was always an absolute joy as Sana. It can be hard to play the âmom friendâ of the group while keeping her a fully fleshed out character but Rukhmani knew how from day one. I think she was a little nervous about the solo/monologue episodes this season, but I knew sheâd knock it out of the park, and I think we can all agree that she absolutely did.
Jackie managed to change Agent McCabeâs entire arc by imbuing the character with genuine emotions in a way that made me go, âhuh, maybe I donât fully understand whatâs going on here.â I love that, and I love the nuances and depth they brought to McCabe from the beginning. Chris I basically hired to read the credits, and then each season, I threw bigger and wilder stuff at him and every single time he delivered. âYouâre leaving because you believe youâre gonna find Shelley!â âYouâre in love now!â âYouâve been shot!â He made it all work, and he totally sold Parkâs dry sense of humor. I get the sense Park is a lot of peopleâs stealth favorite character, and I think Chris is a substantial part of why.
So many people also lent their talent and their voices to this show that listing them all would take a prohibitively long time, but the little cameos here and there of everyone giving their all really added up, I think, to a sense of a vast universe out there, which is absolutely what I was going for. If you played a role in Starship Iris, even if it was just a few lines, I will always be grateful.

As a former theater kid, I joke sometimes that making audio drama is weird because thereâs no curtain call moment. You work really hard on a project, you put it out into the world, and then you just have to hope that people got something from it. But in reality, there have been people from the beginning taking the trouble to reach out and express in some way that the show touched them, and I understand that is an incredible privilege.
Finally, but not least, to those of you who listened: thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
