Avenging Wind (also known as Fathom 9) is an artistic emissary of a new narrative of free expression; an artist without apology. . His origins hail from Memphis, TN-home of the Blues. He has been making music for approximately 2 decades, much of which found him in obscurity. The occasional coffee shop emcee battles, and Hip Hop performances drew him local/regional attention, but this was ultimately underwhelming. We find him in this 'now'- rising from the ashes like the fabled phoenix, and through a musically alchemical fusing of Hip Hop, Soul, Funk/-Jazz and Blues doused with fierce lyricism, Avenging Wind speaks through an innovative medium he simply refers to as: New Blues. The world is starved for new narratives, and Avenging Wind means to be a forerunner in that endeavor. In a nutshell: he is The New Blues Man.
Exactly 1 year after the initial release of Dump Truck Blues: Battle Cry Of The wanderlust, Avenging Wind returns from the catacombs of obscurity to offer your ears Live From The Sugah Shack: Dump Truck Blues LIVE with The Chinese Connection Dub Embassy and Special Guests. The Wanderlust Tour: New Blues Man's Log
So--my travels to NYC and DC began on September 3rd via Megabus...
NYC is an amazing salad bowl of creatives, and participating in the Brooklyn Wildlife Summer Festival was a milestone for me, being my first (of many to come) out-of-town festivals I was invited to jam in. To see you name on a roster of artists from myriad genres is surreal, and NYC is always seen as 'THE PLACE' to do any and everything of creative note.
My host in Brooklyn--Kenny was most gracious, and I literally couch surfed! Got to take in some sites in the Bed-Stuy area with Arin Maya, an artist I'd done some production work with on a recent project. These trips never last as long as you'd like them to, for it seems that as soon as I touched down in NYC, it was time to head to DC.
My long time friend Che Harris opened his home to me, and that was nothing short of The Universe working in my favor, because I had a show, and no place to crash! That show introduced me to some of the brilliant talent DC has, and laughter and networking ensued. Had some technical issues, so my last song was done acapella--and being from TN, there is already some immediate apprehension--but I assured them I would earn each and every applause that night.
I did indeed.
And now--we come to it--the end of the DC stay and I am feeling a bit bittersweet about leaving so soon. A week is never long enough to take in a place like this, but money speaks reality, and I'll just have to make another trip here. I take with me the wonderful exchanges and experiences from both NYC and DC--and hope that my growth will reflect the lessons learned on this journey.
Where To Next???
That, is the question, and it is up to you!!!

Indiegogo Campaign)
Peace and Blessings.
On August 8th, I launched my #WanderlustInNYC Indiegogo Fundraiser Campaign. This project is to raise monies for a ‘Chit’Lin Circuit’ styled tour to promote my album Dump Truck Blues. This is an endeavor I’ve wanted to do since the album was released in November 2013. Fear and insecurity inhibited me following through with this in the past, but Spirit/The Universe kept bringing me back to this place.
I’ve Been to the Mountaintop, Sort of…
Yes. I’ve been making music for two decades. This isn’t the first time I’ve been at the precipice. You would think that meeting Mathew Knowles in 2000 at the Urban Music Showcase (NARAS), or being approached by prospective producers who’ve worked with the likes of Christina Aguilera etc would be enough to motivate me to take that next step…
Nope.
You would think being invited to and presenting an academic paper at a Yale University Hip Hop Symposium in 2006 would imbue me with fearlessness.
Absolutely…Not! To be seen by your peers as a vessel of potential, to feel empty and unfulfilled because unlike some others, you’ve seen the possible future, tasted the aroma of success, and as close as you’ve come, fear shackled you. I am a blues man, if for no other reason than knowing how an unfulfilled dream leaves you broken to the core. My art is like my child, and not helping that expression that comes through me become more than merely words to sound—what legacy do I leave?
Now, years later, after self inflicted isolation and depression, I have experienced a rebirth, and my story has a forum in which to thrive, and be shared as an experience with the world.
Why will this succeed? Because I have seen the other side of ‘what if’ cliff, and my time to leap with faith is here, now.
So here I am, August 2014—with a newly launched fundraiser to bring the New Blues to You. Many of my fans and supporters have asked me repeatedly when I would be in their cities, and expressed sincere interests in supporting that venture any way they could. So now—the beacons are lit, the die is cast, and there is absolutely no turning back.
I am asking you all—to take a look at my Indiegogo Campaign, and if you can donate, Please Do! If you can only share the link with your friends, you would have done more than you know—and just by taking the time to read this note, you have my sincerest thanks.
The Wanderlust Tour IS happening! It begins with me performing in Brooklyn on Sept. 6th at the BK Wildlife Summer Festival at Paper Box! Other shows in other cities including D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis etc are being booked now. This is a special moment, one that We are writing together.
Good morning. Liberate yourself from the weight of things that hold you down. Fight for your freedom. You deserve to be happy by your own standards, and you owe it to yourself. Whatever passion is aching deep in your soul, FEED IT, AND FREE YOURSELF. Bless up, http://instagram.com/newbluesman9
If I can offer ANY sound advice it is this: Know that first and foremost--YOU are your own team, YOU are your own tribe. No one will work for your dream harder than you will. Whatever your passion is, whatever your endeavor might be--do not expect a fairy tale process; that shyt is ugly, lonely, riddled with traps reinforced by the illusion of doubt and fear. And that process will constantly force you to ask yourself: How badly do you want this? If you don't fight for yourself, rest assured no one else can or will. You must be your own advocate, be your own hero. And yes--it may even make you an asshole to some, but oh the fuck well! You--just you keep on pushing, and get out of your own way. #wind
