Just stumbled upon "Anakin was illiterate" take once again. I wanted to make some serious commentary about it, but... sorry, people just stupid.

This is a Screencap from Phantom Menace when Anakin is in the Naboo star-fighter. R2D2 is telling him in Aurebesh (Basic) to go back. Anakin clearly reads this, as his reply is: "Go back? Qui-Gon told me to stay in this cockpit and that's what I'm going to do."

So yes Anakin could read and was never meant to be seen as illiterate.

The important thing to remember about Anakin is that you don't have to be illiterate to choose not to read.

For example, I absolutely believe he has said "That sign can't stop me because I can't read" to someone, probably a higher ranking person whose orders he ignored during the Clone Wars, and they were left trying to figure out whether he was telling the truth.

Meanwhile Obi-Wan is begging Anakin to stop telling people he can't read, because that reflects poorly on his teacher.
